Available in GE

Downloading now...

Using Garmin Express

to download and install 2013.4 (I assume, since it didn't give me the map name, just said there was a new update.). In any event, GE prompted me to use my sdhc as there wasn't enough room on my 260w's Garmin folder. It appears I'm about half way through the download. I'll post more later when the process is finished.

--
RBF

Me too

GE says must load to SD card as too big for my 40. Estimated time for download = 12 min.
Installed map to internal memory and a 109 Mb JCV file to the SD card.

Installed through Garmin Express

No issues.

New Version of GE included

Just before the map update, it installed version 8 of Garmin Express.

--
"Primum Non Nocere" 2595LMT Clear Channel and Navteq Traffic

Just installed but...

it didn't update Mapsource. There were not any options for that.

Not

Not sure what you mean by "didn't update Mapsource".

Normally if you install a map update to the GPS and computer you would just need to open Mapsource and it would see the new maps that got downloaded to the PC. No Mapsource update is required. If you didn't pick the "update to device and computer" option when you installed the new maps then Mapsource would not be able to use 2013.40.

Also Garmin no longer updates the Mapsource program as Basecamp has replaced it.

Right

But I used Garmin Express. Is there any way to update Mapsource? I really do not like Basecamp.

Man, I just uploaded 2013.3 two days ago.

I guess I'm behind the times, just done .3 this week. I wait some what before I'll do this again.

iritating thing

Looks like Garmin is forcing use of Express for update. Any try to update from website is giving link to install Express and no other choice. It's becoming annoying!
I have old version of Map Updater and it found new map. Looks like so far I will keep it as long as it will be working.

Does anyone have a copy of

Does anyone have a copy of the MapUpdater.exe or is it tied to the GPS itself? Unfortunately, I always deleted the updater files when done.

Connect the GPS unit back to the computer.
Run Garmin Express.
Click on "Reinstall".
Then it will give you options.
Select "Update Computer Only" (or words to that effect).

Did not do that for me... loaded up the Lifetime Map Updater and am downloading for the computer now... I hope.

And

And once you obtain and install the MapUpdater program you will need run the program and watch the map installation screens looking for a View Options or Install Options box in the lower left corner of one of the screens that appear after you accept the EULA.

Clicking on that Options box will allow you to pick the option that will download the map update to your PC ONLY. Once that download is completed you will be able to use 2013.40 with Mapsource.

MapSource Discontinued

UZA_Dave wrote:

No. You can continue to use the last version of MapSource Garmin made available, but there will be no further updates or support of any kind to it. Eventually it will break or otherwise be rendered incompatible with current operating systems, so it's in your best interests to learn how to use BaseCamp, as eventually you'll have no choice in the matter.

It would benefit him then to be a little more specific when asking his questions. As shown, he asks about updating the program itself, not the maps. The maps themselves would appear on both programs once installed.

I don't blame you...

Just like their firmware updates, seems as though Garmin doesn't beta test their PC software either. Errors like this and others with low-memory units shouldn't be happening, especially if their map update software (Garmin seems to force the Garmin Express usage) can leave your unit map-less and inoperable. I'll just stick with the Garmin Map Updater when I get around to updating my units.

The whole map update process is turning out to be more of a PITA every time. rolleyes

Download

Used the Garmin Express the first time and all went well for installing to unit only. Downloaded Garmin Lifetime to get maps on the computer. Was concern that with the new Windows 8 operating system there may be problems. But everything worked just like Windows XP did with no hitches.

Okay, just to follow up on this a bit further then, we can continue to use MapSource and although there have been no updates available for awhile now, I was still able to update maps. I gather that now we can no longer even update maps on MapSource or am I misinterpreting this?

If

If you use Garmin's MapUpdater software and in that program, select install the map update to my GPS and to my Computer or install the update to my computer only, you will be able to use Mapsource for as long as you like with current maps.

Garmin is making no further revisions to Mapsource but it remains a usable program as long as you continue to update the maps by always insuring that you download a map update to both the GPS and to your computer or just to your computer. MapUpdater is now the best (maybe only) way of doing this.

If you use MapUpdater rather than Garmin Express for your map update--and if you choose Install to Device and Computer in MapUpdater, map updates will be added to be used ith Mapsource on your computer. I've updated two nuvis today from two PCs and chose to update the computer and GPS--Mapsource on both PCs can see and use he new map update.

MapSource still crashes with CNNANT2013.40

North America map update 2013.40 still crashes MapSource, just like 2013.30 did. Test yourself by doing a Find for Franklin, TN. Zoom out twice and crash.

Yes I know MapSource is a discontinued product and yes I know BaseCamp is Garmin's poor Mac port of an outdoors product that is supposed to substitute for MS. BC is like routing with a fat crayon compared to MS sharp pencil.

Oh, for you dissatisfied Garmin Express users, email or call Garmin and tell them your problems. If they get a few thousand calls/emails, maybe the CSR firewall will decide to wake their programmer and tell them to fix it.

@dave

I could not duplicate your results... I know Mapsource did crash on me a few times with 2013.30, but never did with earlier versions.
I'll post back if I have any crashes.

Downloaded/Installed 2013.40 NA Just Fine...

Used Garmin Express and 2013.40 downloaded and installed to my nuvi 50LM without a hitch.

Alas, 2013.40 does NOT included the new 80 mile stretch of I-69. You'd think that getting the Interstates updated would be a priority, as well as being likely much simpler than integrating things with lots of detail like new neighborhoods with scores of new addresses for each.

I mean, sheesh, how often does the national Interstate network get such a significant increase in new lane-miles? Lol.

Long Term Planning And Thinking

For now you can continue to use MapSource as you always have. However, at some point in the future the program will no longer work due to Garmin no longer supporting it as well as advances in operating systems. To save yourself more than a little aggravation later you might want to put up with some aggravation now and learn how to use BaseCamp.

new maps 2013.40 not installing on my Nuvi 765

I tried to install the latest maps on my Nuvi 765 which has about 1.3 GB free space on internal drive through Garmin Express. Unfortunately, it fails with "UNKNOWN TRASNFER ERROR". Garmin Express even selected external SD card for installs but it still fails with unknown error.
I will appreciate your help.
My second Nuvi 1490 seems to going fine with external SD card install.

I left Mapsource open for a few hours. I just now zoomed out from Franklin. BINGO.
I did click on "Error report" to Garmin. I don't know if that is a good idea though.

Once again

Garmin just did it again!!! We are Garmin's Beta testers!!! No need to spend time, money or effort in beta testing!!!
And the worse part is; they get away with it time and time again!!!
Must be nice to be the only game in town.

Finally, it got installed with GE..
