Garmin Express software

For those, who like new stuff. Garmin released new software known as "Garmin Express". Haven't tested it, but according to Garmin:

Garmin Express is your one-stop shop for keeping your nüvi®, zūmo® or dēzl™ up-to-date.

This software is for:

  • Update Maps
  • Garmin Express downloads available map updates to your computer automatically, and alerts you when new maps are ready to install. You can even control download speed and schedules.

  • Transfer Favorites
  • Garmin Express lets you transfer all your favorites from one device to another with one click.

  • Install Voices & Vehicles
  • Browse and install free custom voices and vehicles.

  • Back Up Files
  • Garmin Express makes it easy to back up and restore saved addresses, routes and waypoints to and from your computer.

If you need download there is link to Garmin site:
http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

Looks like improved version of automatic updates software, witch was rather terrible. Maybe this time they got it right.

I was convencing myself that I could see improvement in the newest version of Garmin Express, with the cleaned up interface and the like but then:

- everytime I attach my 3597 to the PC, Garmin Express tells me that there is a firmware update to version 3.80. Problem is I'd had 3.80 installed for days and and the previous version of GE was used to install it. rolleyes

- almost everytime I go into the Extras all I ever get after watching the "spinning wheel" for 30 seconds or more, is a blank screen. No bundles, voices, or anything else. rolleyes rolleyes

Works good for firmware updates

I actually think GE does a good job for firmware updates. For the latest 8.10 update on the 2595, webupdater (or maybe it was "My Garmin"?) gave me no option to just install the new firmware: it wanted to install every voice and other update that's in the pile. Garmin Express let me pick and choose and of course I only picked the firmware update.

Once I had it, I uninstalled GE as per usual until the next map update comes out.

Went to download the most recent version of Garmin Express on the Garmin website and was told that my operating system was incompatible with GE (I have Windows 7) - so would not let me download. Trying the Garmin Web Updater - hopefully a better product.

I can't solve your issue but I can offer some data.

I also have Garmin Express on a Windows 7 (64bit) PC. My current Garmin Express version before reading your message was 3.2.25.

I first tried updating through the Garmin Express "Check for Update" route. I successfully updated to 3.2.27.0, and repeating the check, I updated to 3.2.29.0.

Then I thought that maybe your attempt to download the most current version from the Garmin website was the problem rather than the method I chose. I then tried the Garmin website update method as you described. The download went fine and when started, it told me I already had the latest update.

I can't explain your issue but can confirm that the current Garmin Express works with Windows 7.

WebUpdater is a good alternative and I keep it on my PC and tend to use it more than Garmin Express. The one thing WebUpdater won't do is offer new voices to the newer series of nuvis, which is something that Garmin Express (and the myGarmin website) can do.

Download or update?

I was not clear as to whether you were trying to "update" GE or download it for the first time. Which was it?

more ?

I just had enough of hearing of G.E. Web Updater as done a very good Job so far for me and I stick with it.

Win 7 here also

For GarminGal, it's clear that Windows 7 and Garmin Express are compatible, either through the GE update process or the original website download. Since you state the problem was with the Garmin website download of GE, my first thought is that it may be a browser issue. If you have two browsers on your PC now (say InternetExplorer and Chrome), try the download with the other browser. It may even be worth installing a second browser if you just have the default Internet Explorer. For what it's worth, I had success downloading Garmin Express from the Garmin website with Internet Explorer. If that doesn't work, it could be a browser security or privacy setting.

All of the above is based on our thought that Garmin is mistakenly saying it's incompatible with your operating system. I suppose it may be possible that Garmin's warning to you that prevented the download is correct which could be due to a PC running Windows 7 that hasn't had Windows Updates done for a while. I strongly doubt that you haven't done your Windows Updates soon after they come out, but it's worth asking you to check Windows Updates and see if you have updates available.

Like you, I also know and often prefer the WebUpdater/GarminMapUpdater software combination over Garmin Express for nuvi updates. As long as WebUpdater and GarminMapUpdater continue to work for new nuvi device updates and map updates, you won't be losing anything by using them instead of Garmin Express.

This did not work for me today on two different laptops running Windows 10 and both are 64 bit. I started a new post about this.

I used Garmin Express for initial updates with a new unit, but have found it easier to do basic software/map updates via WiFi on the unit itself. It frees up PC resources for other things.

G.E. mainly seems useful for those extra downloads, but YMMV.
