I guess

I will not update the 855 than if the jcv file is that small.

My nuvi 855 results

WAASup wrote:

Regarding the small D3153050A.JCV file for 2012.40, Garmin seems to have done some JV voodoo. Using 2 test routes from the Garmin forums http://goo.gl/XznAn, I get 6 JV's for the US Atlanta route, and 3 JV's for the Canada route. With the large 2012.30 JCV file, there were 6 Atlanta and 4 Canada JV's.

Also, using @t923347's Toronto test route from 3500 Dufferin to Pearson airport, there are 4 JV's with 2012.40 compared to 5 with the large 2012.30 JCV.

OK, based on what you've said above--and since Garmin states there will be no large jcv file made available for the new map, I bit the bullet and updated my 855 to 2012.40.

In northern Arizona along I-40 and I-17, the new 2012.40 map with its 45-ishMB jcv file does offer a small number of Junction Views. This is an improvement over the default Junction Views in the past map updates where no Junction Views were seen. But compared to the two previous map updates and manually-downloaded large jcv file, my first guess is that I've lost about half of the northern AZ junction views--and as reported, the junction views now displayed are not the photo-realistic JVs.

Conclusion: 1) the default 2012.40 map update offers more JVs to nuvi 8x5 owners than the past two map updates with their default jcv files, 2) the number of JVs offered with the default 2012.40 update to 8x5 owners is smaller than that seen with the large manually downloaded jcv file offered for the previous two updates--and is of lower quality (loss of photo realistic views).

Having updated now to the new map, I expect I'll keep the new map with its mapping and POI updates and learn to live with the fewer and poorer quality JVs. But knowing what I now know, I don't know that I'd have gone ahead and done the update--I may have been happier with the previous map and its large jcv file with maximum JVs and JVs with the best image quality.

Large JCV.

Since I have both a 755T and 855, I was able to copy the 2012.40 large JCV file from the 755T over to the SD card on the 855. As in the previous two map versions, this large JCV works fine on the 855. It is too bad that Garmin is refusing to provide the large file to the 8x5 and 1xxx owners as they did in the past. I suppose it creates too many support issues for them. I hope those of you who want the large JCV file know someone who has a 7x5 and can get the file to you.

This appears to be another case where technicians at Garmin Support give different answers to different customers on the same question. But in any case, I am glad that in the end Garmin did the right thing in making the file available to users who are willing to go through the extra installation steps.

You will still have to download the actual map from Garmin.

alandb,

I'm pleased to report that the Mac version of Garmin"s Lifetime Map Updater utility worked like a charm for this release. On Tuesday I returned to my Mac Pro after a brief absence to find a dialog on screen advising that an upgrade to the 20112.40 map set was available for download. I tapped the OK button after connecting my nuvi 2350LMT via USB and the job was complete 45 minutes later.

Sweet.

Mine, too. A big thank you, omt! Kudos all around. I've just simulated a few routes and all my old photorealistic JVs are back. Whew, I'm glad I didn't ID the Software Support Specialist by name who gave me incorrect info this morning.

For what it's worth, I still can't find a faq discussing this at Garmin's web sites for the new map although faqs do exist for the map before this as well as some non-US map updates.

.

I got the ~750 MB JV file automatically on my 765T. My 3490LTM & 3790T got the split-screen JV file.

I just now downloaded this. The 757 indicated Megabytes came through at a very steady 1.1 Mbytes/sec, which may well be my large file throttle rate from Comcast. So, about 2245 UTC on February 9, 2012 the server support for this file was excellent.

Thank you omt for finding and posting this information.

Can't get in

Just tried to update my maps and can't get to the My Garmin site. I got a page with Christmas packages as the background and a message saying, "Sorry! So many people want to “Give a Garmin” this holiday season that our site is “recalculating.”
Please try again soon"

Sigh... Guess I'll have to try later. It's a bit of a bummer as I'm leaving on a 3-day geocaching trip with my wife starting tomorrow morning. I had hoped to have the newest maps for the driving portion of the trip.

...or to the same place on the SD card where the previous large jcv resided. But yes, the new small 45MB file needs to be removed or renamed from the nuvi for this new large one to work, wherever it's kept.

The junction view file must be the same as the map it came with.
You CAN"T use a junction view file from a previous map.

I personally don’t use the large file in my 2460 but see many folks here were having a conniption fit because it appeared it wasn’t going to be available that got me wondering what would happen by renaming the JCV

The 2460 will accept both the split screen and full screen JCV file. My vision is not the best so I appreciate seeing the full screen since I already know what highway I am on. Although the full screen is almost double the size, there is still plenty of room on the 2460, or I can just put it on an SD card. Both the 460MB default JCV and the 775MB full screen have the same amount of junction views, its just the screen size that is different, thus the larger file.

--

Agreed

It makes for a quick glance at the screen with the full screen JCV, and less time distracted. Especially when in traffic, it's a bonus.

You can rename the file but it will not longer work. Tried it a few times and it's always the same result.

The last 2 large files have been stored on the Garmin servers in the same place. They appear to be available within 48 hours (or less) of the map update being released. The location appears to be:

http://download.garmin.com/support/

followed by /the map release number folder/NA/JV/the JV file name for the specific map release. So the location for the latest large JV file is:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_40/NA/JV/D3060050A.J...

and the location of the large file for map release 2012.30 was:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_30/NA/JV/D3060040A.J...

Hopefully Garmin will retain this file system and we will be able to easily find the large file in the future.

The next one should be:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2013_10/NA/JV/D3060060A.J...
