Do you get nervous with letters from govt agencies

I admit that I do. IRS. PA Dept of Revenue. DMV.

There is a tiny consolation when the mailing is not certified.

Today thanks to informed delivery I see a letter is coming from the PA Department of Revenue. In 26 years, I have never gotten a letter from them, so I'm agitated at the gym.

I come home, and create an online account (lots of steps and an interesting security check is you would need to know the dollar amount of your tax obligation, smart, that's one step imho more secure than the refund or owed amount).

Unlike the IRS, the mailed communication is there.

NOTICE OF WAIVED PENALTY

I gotta tell you as much as I think I know, there is a lot I don't know.

I sold a mutual fund so we could buy a new vehicle, and I had that mutual fund since 1994. You can guess what the capital gain was, high 5 figures. I thought I owed the taxes by 4/15/26, not when the gain was realized. This caused issues with the IRS, and now the Commonwealth.

Life is a cartoon, but for adults. The end. lol

Yup.. a cartoon it is

Clairvoyancy is required to keep the tax collector

The taxman wants (expects) you to pay as you earn; if no taxes are automatically deducted from the earnings, you must pay in 4 equal quarterly payments. Typically, my mutual funds post their capital gains in December. There is no way to know much the capital gains will be a year in advance. I'm not clairvoyant.
I set up a spreadsheet for the year to estimate my expected tax liability monthly and adjust my quarterly payments accordingly. I've never received the nasty letter with unequal payments, but one year it took the state 9 months to get me my refund.

Like I will lose maybe $250 in interest as a result of the quarterly payments--but think about $250 vs. who knows what a penalty would be?

I'm going to get probably an $9,000 tax refund come 2027 (because I won't have any gains from any sales, just cap gains from mutual funds). Was never aware of paying quarterly and I have never sold a house before, that would be worse quarterly payments.

I have a feeling that is different meaning say I know the gain is $500k. I can in fact take estimated taxes out of this in full, aka $75k and pay it within the quarter. That's my limited understanding.

But again in my case the lesson learned was worth it, no penalties. And it was unplanned that we would need this money to purchase a new vehicle. The shame of it is I ended up using savings and not this money, compounding the cost of the vehicle (missed out on a 20% gain). But I refuse to leverage myself for a car. I don't worry when the market has a downturn (feel like that as of late). I have seen the posts for 40 years where people borrow 100% for a vehicle and leave money in stocks, because the loan rate is lower than the rate at which Wall St. climbs. They have been right since 1994. But I don't want to do that...

State Tax and revenue

I do my sons taxes and one year he got a letter stating he owed money. He did not owe. They didn't match up his payment with his account. He had to make an appointment online to hand deliver the documents. They still needed to send the information to Santa fe to fix it. It took awhile to get it straightened out. Now he adjusts his W4 yearly. I know I did the taxes correctly but seeing the letter gave me anxiety.

When I See Tax Division on the Letterhead....

my heart skips a beat.

Nope. It doesn’t bother me a bit!

It is what it is.

Great!

Maybe you'll donate your refund to those that insist on reparations! smile

internet is funny

imho it's normal to be uncomfortable to get unknown and unwanted documents from the govt.

But as you can see, responses can be nah, or a joke.

One of these days, we're all gonna do the Bob Dylan, and be humbled by something.

Imagine if people weren't behind a keyboard lol

Kinda reminds me of when I posted that my new hvac blew 43F, as if people understood thermodynamics (one person did)

yep

Not a good feeling at all, and once in 26 years for me....

Turbo Tax

I use the Turbo Tax audit protection service. They handle all correspondence with the IRS & state tax people. I only get letters if I owe $$.

Yeah, it's $45/yr, but to me, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Maybe just think for a minute before posting?...

Really. I would stop and think about the current landscape with scammers and AI today. The posts from some people here about their investments, tax problems, etc. are a real gold mine of very personal information that a bad guy could weaponize against you.

We all really need to think more about this today - and I'm guilty of "over sharing" too. A forum like this that has been around for years is highly interesting for an AI - and Gemini even mentioned this site in one of our "conversations" as great resource that it was well aware of.

Just sayin'....

website is not even https, and it's 2026. If anyone here were really concerned, they wouldn't even login. We need to lighten up imho, and just be human. It's ok. Nobody is gonna get us. I foolishly didn't apply for a gym membership reimbursement for 2 years in a row, $300 down the drain. That's personal info. I'm not ashamed of it nor do I think someone is going to use it against me. As a matter of fact I told a coworker and he said oh s***, I have to tell my wife, she has your healthcare too. So his family gains $150, it's ok.

No

I don't get concerned or even worried!
