Can't Get There
I'm thinking of updating mine tonight.... Just want to know others have had no issue...
I have a 660, but I have been unable to get to the myGarmin page to even attempt the download.

Now that I have this file can someone explain to a newbie what a JCV file works and what to do with it????
Looking at your profile I'm assuming its for the Nuvi 1450. The JCV file is for Junction View that your 1450 is compatible with. It differs from Lane Assist which is built in the maps.
Junction View enables the large green signs posted on highways showing exits. It does not have all of them. It also shows what lane to be in if one should appear on your planned route. I've read it's more accurate than Lane Assist since sometimes it puts you in the wrong lane. It's not a fault of Garmin but rather in the Navtaq maps.
The JCV file should be located in the JCV folder.
I'm not sure where that folder is in the 1450, it's either in the Garmin\JCV or in System\JCV, I believe yours is the System\JCV.

If you're new to looking at files in your nuvi, bozlawless, the first step is to make a backup of your nuvi's files to a computer hard drive, recordable DVD, etc. If you're using a Windows PC, be sure your Windows Folder Options are set to 1) show file extensions of known file types, 2) show hidden files and 3) show system files.
Before you start, look at your nuvi's drive and determine how much free space you have. If you have 450MB of free space, you're not going to be able replace a 45MB jcv stock file with a 750MB large jcv file. In this case, you can still use the large jcv file but you'll need to look for instructions for putting jcv files onto a SD card. Your nuvi 1450 only has 2GB of space total so I strongly suggest putting jcv files on SD cards so that you'll have space on the nuvi internally for future map updates with the largest coverage of North America.
Since you've already downloaded the large jcv file, simply look on your nuvi for a smaller jcv file, then delete or rename the small file (I like to rename it with a modified extension which allows it to stay in the nuvi; i.e., D*********.jcv_old), then copy the large file from your computer to nuvi.
Please let us know when you've succeeded and ask if you have more questions.

Try clearing your DNS cache as well.
Clearing the DNS cache got me to the login screen.
After entering my user ID & password, I still got the "Sorry" error screen.
I'll try tomorrow morning.
On the Garmin site I went to extras, downloads, map updates, check for updates, automotive and voila it worked immediately
I tried your way this morning... it eventually brought me to the same "Sorry" screen.

Lifetime updater
Again I am having problems with the Lifetime Updater. It tells me there is a map update available and goes into download etc process. When it loads the map to the GPS it locks up after about 90% complete. It does this with both my nuvi 1390 and 350. I reloaded the Lifetime updater and still have the same problem. Both gps seem to work ok but Lifetime updated still tells me I have map updates pending.

The Garmin Communicator correctly detects my 660, but when I click on the download, I get the same stupid screen. Grrrrrrr
OK, so I called Garmin Support. Two things:
1. They had a random server problem yesterday that they thought they had fixed last night causing the problem I am experiencing. It is still not fixed. I cannot log into myGarmin.
2. The support rep had me download & install the Garmin Lifetime Updater program (YUK!). Right now, it is downloading the maps, but I won't know for a while if it installs correctly.
Whatever happens, after this is over, I'm uninstalling this phone-home, piece-o-junk program.
Last thing I want is another background task running in my System Tray.

Update
Thanks for the information! Time to update them all. One day, maybe they will do it over the cellular network?!?
Download Complete...
So the download completed. The window now says,

Estimated time remaining: 576 hours
Tampa, FL - Garmin nüvi 660 (Software Ver 4.90), 2021.20 CN NA NT maps | Magellan Meridian Gold
I saw that estimated time remaining too when I did that
and left it overnight and it still not finish. I started the new download and it only take an hour.
JCV 2012.40 and Status
I just ran the update on my 765T and I got the 757MB JCV file. Still need to reload my routes.
On the plus side, they have fixed a map error introduced in 2011.40 which I reported and was confirmed fixed by NAVTEQ. They have not yet incorporated a new major bypass in Parksville, NY on NY-17. I am not sure if that will be prioritized or if it will take until the end of the year to be updated. The bypass was added to eliminate a grade level crossing as the road is converted from NY-17 to I-86.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
Download Completed
and left it overnight and it still not finish. I started the new download and it only take an hour.
The download completed just fine. Where I saw the hours remaining was after the "building maps" and I clicked Install to actually start loading the maps onto the PC (BaseCamp) and onto the 660. I know the 660 only has USB 1.0, but geez. (BTW - it now says 68 minutes remaining).
Guess it took a while for it's calculation to get fine tuned.

Success! 2012.40 Maps Installed On Nuvi 660
As I've done in the past, here are the free space stats on my 2GB 660 before and after the map updates.
The new maps will overwrite the previous one. HOWEVER - each map release is bigger than the last which means the free space gets smaller and smaller. Here are the free space numbers:
New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB
After 2011.10 update - 270MB
After 2011.20 update - 252MB
After 2011.30 update - 217MB
After 2011.40 update - 176MB
After 2012.10 update - 128MB
Deleted unnecessary files - 391MB
After 2012.20 update - 255MB
After 2012.30 update - 202MB
After 2012.40 update - 169MB
With only 128MB of free space after the 2012.10 update, I decided to remove the unnecessary files as discussed in various topics on the forum before. First, I made a current backup on the 660 on my PC - just in case. I then deleted the Audible, Vehicle, Voice & Help files I didn't need (mostly language files other than English).
That got me up to 391MB of free space before installing the 2012.20 update. I was able to install all of North America.
The 2012.40 update also installed into BaseCamp. I then deleted the 2012.30 maps from BaseCamp using Windows Add/Remove programs.
I also uninstalled the Garmin Lifetime Updater program after the update completed sucessfully.
Now, if Garmin can just fix the login problem to myGarmin...

My update went really well. I downloaded maps to computer only. Then using MapInstall, I loaded only the lower 48. The boot-up time is back to 15 seconds when starting the truck.
Previously I had emptied the JCV folder on the unit. After the update, I noticed the folder is still empty. No matter though, I loaded the new 757MB on the card. On my test route in St. Louis everything looks OK.
I have 351MB free on my 1490t.

Yup, features like Junction View will not be loaded when using MapInstall from your computer to your nuvi. It's lucky for you that you planned to manually download and install the big jcv file anyway. The only way the jcv files and other features will be loaded to a nuvi by default is by having the official Garmin map update process load the map directly to the nuvi.

New map download went just fine then large JCV to CD card.
Test drive and OH NO; no Junction View.
After messing with it for around 2 hours no telling how many test drives I finally figured it should be extension JCV and NOT JVC on the SD card.
Getting old is tough but the alternative is worse. I have my JV's back and figured it out all by myself.

JCV File Size for 3790
I got the ~750 MB JV file automatically on my 765T. My 3490LTM & 3790T got the split-screen JV file.
How large was the file you got on the 3790?
I updated using the Garmin Map Updater and not the Lifetime Updater to upgrade to 2012.40 maps. The JCV file that was installed was D3191040A.JCV with a file size of 449 MB. Since 449 MB is a lot smaller than 750 MB, does this mean one of the smaller files got installed and some junction views will be missing? My 3790 has 2.75 GB of free space at the moment...
Split screen?

The 3790 uses a split screen JV, doesn't it? If so, my guess is that the smaller file size is simply the result of the smaller image size and fewer pixels and is not offering fewer JVs than the 775-ishMB file that's available for manual download. Note that I said "guess" above
[Update] I see the bouncing pachyderm feels the same way but I beat him by a few seconds.
@compupolis
No, it mean the split screen view uses less space (megabytes) than the full screen images. That's all.

Hoops
I don't understand why Garmin makes us jump thru so many hoops to get an lifetime update. I had 2 units to update and first I had to download a Communicator then there was something else that had to download then an Updater then you had to go thru that thing. Some of these didn't take the first time so I had to redownload and on and on. Then I had to download all this again 'cause the first time only worked with the first unit. This crap is totally silly. I wish they'd hire a software person that knew something about what they were doing. Aside from each download taking almost 10 hours. That is partially the fault of the internet connection where we are staying in Phx tho. Everything takes forever here.

If you install to the unit and computer wen doing the first D/L, then when you run the install program for the second it will use the files stored on the computer. This "trick" has been discussed the last 3 or 4 map updates.

Yes but you have to read the install screens carefully so as not to miss the Install Options buttons. That's the only place you can select to download to the GPS and the computer. Downloading to the device only is the default.

It depends on the nüvi, but removing the internal maps may result in a "No detailed maps installed" pop up appearing on the nüvi's screen. Therefore, don't remove the maps.

It was looking for the 660 and would not tie in to the 3790. Now maybe that is because the 3790 file is so much larger than the 660 because of the Junction view. All I know is it went back thru the whole slooow process.

A Garmin Software Support Specialist has replied to my question. There will be no large jcv file offered by Garmin for the new 2012.40 map update; and for the nuvi 8x5 series, the size of the jcv file that will be part of the update's installation is about 45MB.

No you just need to update your maps to 2012.40. Your 3490 will automatically install a 400+Mb JV split screen file which is exactly the same as the larger 700+Mb downloadable file. The only difference is that the split screen views are smaller (half a screen vs. full screen) and therefore take up less file space. There is no drop in resolution, and in fact, you may well find the resolution to appear better with the half screen pictures.
In other words, don't worry about ever needing the largest JV file as the one you get with the update will be the same file. The larger file is for models that don't support split screen views (or models without enough disk space to automatically get that big file). Of course if you want full screen views you can always download and install the bigger file, IMO a waste of time and disk space.

Same as yours...
How large was the file you got on the 3790?
The JV file that was installed to my 3490 was the 449 MB file. The ~750 MB full screen/high res JV file was likely installed to the 765 because I had the previous ~750 MB JV file installed. I believe the installer will -try- to install the same type of JV file that is currently installed on the unit or the next lower size if there is not enough memory to hold the larger file. I would -assume- that if you had the largest ~750 JV file from 2012.30 on the 3490, that the installer would put the 2012.40 ~750 MB file on the unit to replace it. I say -assume- because I have not verified this to be true.

It's not as torturous as it
It's not as torturous as it sounds. The automated install apparently checks the amount of space on internal memory and offers to write to MicroSD cards if there is insufficient space. However, if you want the data written fast, you want a PC or laptop with at least a SD Card slot. I can transfer maps to the MicroSD far faster using my laptop's SD Card slot since it doesn't have the USB bottleneck.

I downloaded the .40 update and it asks if you want to install to the unit, the unit and on the PC, or leave the install file on the computer. I selected on the unit only and checked leave the install file on the computer but where is it? I want to install to the PC at a later date. Is this possible?

Unrelated but: Is there also a place that lists firmware updates for specific units? I have the 3490 and wanted to step back through the history (if possible).
Specifically for the 34xx series, the link is:
