Another bug squashed. Received this from Garmin this afternoon:

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Just wanted to touch base and let you know that we have pushed PC v2.0.5 which has a fix for the update checking frequency. In addition, there are a few fixes for random crashes we’ve seen and a fix for an issue some users with proxies were having connecting to our servers.

Thanks for keeping us posted. I have 1 of the GPSs at 20 days now and the other at 15 days. Since I don't know exactly what the change was I'll just leave them for now, just for the fun of it, to see if they do a check.

I still keep clicking the Check Now on my GPS, the button is to irresistable, I can't help it.

Not a problem

It is what it is. What would really be nice is if I could tell it to check everyday at 2 PM. That way when I came home from work between 4-5 the new map would have already been downloaded and waiting for me to connect.

Have you used the Scheduler (Settings - Schedule - Advanced Options) as it looks like you can set it to actually do the download (if available) to specific hours of the day.

Didn't work

So I attempted to use the new updater to check if an update was available, which I knew was available, and when I hit the button, it went to check, hung up, crashed and still will not run. I have reinstalled it a few times already and it still won't run. It crashes a few seconds after starting up.

So I am downloading the update the other way.

Crash report sent to Garmin.

I didn't want to use the darn automated updater program ... but was less than excited to see today when I logged on to My Garmin ... and found a map update available, but only had two options.

Lifetime Map Updater Works Fine!

Today I installed and used version 2.0.5 of the Lifetime Map Updater program, and everything (after a fashion) went just fine. This version keeps you up to date on exactly what’s happening at all times. Upon downloading at full speed 57.7% of the 2012.2 map files, I discovered the “Settings” button in the lower left of the window and changed the update schedule to weekends only, 4AM to 12PM, and to my dismay, the downloading stopped completely. I waited about 45 minutes for it to start up again; it did not, so I cancelled the download and restarted it. I guess it’s best not to try to change the settings if you’re using full speed instead of background downloads. The whole thing other than the “Settings” disruption went well, and I intend to use this automated system. Since this is the first day that the North American map version has been out, this may have been coincidental to a log jam at the servers. The download and installation of files seems to be much faster with this program.

Disrgard the above statement. I did have a choice, at the download it ask if you want to run or save. If you choose save it ask if you want to save or save as. If you choose save as it will go to your desk top and you can rename it if you so choose. Sorry about the confusion.

rth..., check the 2012.20 thread! Updating your nuvi 855 from 2012.10 to 2012.20 will decrease the file size of your junction views by about 86%. In rural northern Arizona, I've simulated routes along the interstate highway that in the past gave me two Junction Views--I now have none with today's new map update.

If you like Junction Views and if the older 2012.10 map has no big street issues that were corrected with the newer map, seriously ask yourself if you should do this new map update.

I decided on selection

I decided on selection number 2, I can manually check every so often.

After multiple failed

After multiple failed attempts to use the Auto Updater, I finally resorted to using the "one time" only installation option.

I selected the "lower 49" ... and ended up with a JCV file of 51 megs on my 1450LMT.

And ALL OF THE KNOWN Junction views were NOT included.

I'm going back to 2012.1 and the larger Junction file.

Garmin had better get a handle on this. It's ridiculous to give some users a "mini" Junction view.

Lifetime Updater Info to pass on to Garmin

@t923347,

Here are my notes regarding the updates for you to pass on. Hope it helps.

v2.0.5, Win 7 - 64 bit

When I read on POI-Factory that the 2012.20 map was released I clicked to manually check for updates on the 1st GPS (zumo 660)which it found and downloaded the map. All 3 devices are set to download to the computer and device. The download speed seemed fast. I had to click download for all 3 devices.

After the download I connected the zumo and tried to installed the maps on the GPS. It failed on the 1st attempt. I logged off the PC and logged back on since I hadn't done this in many days. A 2nd attempt to install the maps on the zumo were successful.

On the 2nd and 3rd devices (both nuvi 765Ts) the program said the maps were downloaded and ready for install. The map install failed on every attempt (there were many attempts after logoffs and reboots of the PC) so the maps were installed on these 2 units through MyGarmin.

All failures on all 3 devices had the same 2 popup messages.

The 1st msg read -
Note
Some files were unsuccessfully downloaded. These files will be downloaded again. If the downloads are again unsuccessful, please try to rerun the map update at a later time.

The 2nd msg read -
Warning
There was an error installing your maps. Please try again. If problems continue, please contact Garmin customer support.

On the main screen of the Lifetime Updater program for the 1st GPS, zumo 660, the screen reads "No New Map Available" and the command button says "Search for Device". Above the command button in gray it says "Attach your device to continue".

On the 2nd and 3rd devices, both 765Ts, the screen reads "New Map Available / US & Canada (2012.20)" and the command button is stuck on Install. It won't allow me to Download the map again to solve the problem.

I'm leaving the screens like this for now.

As a side note, all 3 ended up with the smaller D3178010A.JCV file at 49.8 MB. The 3rd 765T when I downloaded the map again doing a test the file was now D3153030A.JCV at the same size. I don't know the difference in them.

Poor Garmin

What a mickey mouse operation they're running. They beta tested the automated updater for lifetime map owners for several months before releasing it.

In the very first week it was released they had three new version updates shock When the 2012.20 maps were finally released many users reported numerous problems and failures. I take my hat off to those who actually tried this new updater, as far as I'm concerned your all very courageous knowing Garmins track record.

They've released in the past software versions that have bricked units. They release a POI loader and a short time later release a second corrected version. Did you really think this updater was going to work the first time around question It's a fact that whatever Garmin does never or very rarely works the first time.

When using webupdater on the 2x5 units, the voice files always state that there's a new version available when in reality there isn't. This problem or nuisance has been reported to Garmin and almost a year later still no change nor fix ! This problem was in another series and fixed in the past but we 2x5 owners must wait patiently until they decide to fix it. How can a problem from one series go to another, I guess it's something similar to the flu and simply cannot be avoided.

Look at what their doing to their loyal customers with units that have the jvc files with this new map update. It's amazing and personally I'm very disappointed in Garmin and classify all of this as a total lack of incompetence and disregard towards their customers.

For me the program seems to still needs some work.

No that's what you get when you have beta testers that don't actually beta test the software. They get into the beta program, install it, but either don't test it, don't report any problems, and only do it to put on their resume "beta tester for X company".

I know many people that DO actual beta testing really don't have problems. Mainly because those willing to beta test also keep their computers up to date, patched, and free of malware and virus'. It's the people that install the program after the release that have no idea what a virus scanner is, windows update is, or are still running Windows 98.

I did testing for a few companies several years ago, and I did my best to actually have a lab of machine images form across our company in various states of patching, installed apps, and user rights. Even after all that we still had techs that could not figure out how to read the minimum requirements for install, or figure out how to UN-install the old app first, or do basic troubleshooting.

Sorry for the rant, I know it's frustrating for a new app to require so many patches and fixes, but at least Garmin is acknowledging them and fixing them.

I received the same error. I went to My Garmin and clicked on Option 1 to try to install Updater again. It then went to the next screen and gave me an option to repair the updater, it did not give me the option to reinstall, just repair. I chose that option and it did something....It then gave me the option to downloaded and installed my map as before. It worked this time. It still gave the error at the end and said my maps were installed and the map is now updated on Nuvi 2450 and Mapsource.

I downloaded the installer and went through the entire install as well, only to get the same message to try again. Rebooted the PC and reconnected the 765T. It then validated the download then reinstalled. It worked fine this time.

Here is what happenned to me.

When the maps were released the Garmin Lifetime Updater, kept saying that the Garmin servers were too busy try again later. I tried several times, then decided to go to the Garmin site and install the old way. At the download it suggested I use the Garmin Lifetime Updater, so I decided to reinstall and try again. I did and it worked.

Except at the end of the installs for my 785 and 760, it had a pop-up and said there was an error, to try again. When i hit ok another pop-up came up and said the update was successful. As far as I can tell everything is OK.

Note my 760 no longer holds the full maps, I had to install the lower 49 states on it.

I don't think there is any need to uninstall the program and then reinstall it. I think you need to remove each of your GPS units from the program and then add them back in. Use the X button on the Devices screen to remove and the "add devices" button on the same screen to put them back.

I have sent your post, where you very clearing state the process you went through and the errors observed, on to the Map Technology Team at Garmin. I will post their response when received.

On the next update (or now, if you maybe want to re-do this map), delete some of your unused voice and help files. With more room, you'll be able to again install all of North America. I did this before the last map update on my nuvi 750 and now have all of North America and enough free space for future updates, POI files, etc.

@t923347,

Did as you said and all 3 are now reading "No New Map Available" and the command button again reads "Check for Updates" and is working as before. It gives you the option to "reinstall" the maps.

Note to pass on to the map team. I don't know when the command button changed from "Install" where it kept failing on the 2nd and 3rd devices to "Search for Device" but I just noticed it had changed when I was deleting the last device.

Also while deleting the devices all 3 gave me the following popup message.
Warning
An update is in progress for this device. Are you sure you would like to cancel the update and remove this device?

I'm thinking of doing a re-install on the 1st unit to see if it works later today.

Actually

Actually I think the warning message you saw as you deleted devices is a good thing. The program seems to get stuck, as you've seen, and thinks that it's updating a device when in fact it isn't. Clearing the devices from the program produces the warning you received but also clears the "stuck" status.

I only have one device installed so I can't be sure but I think the "Install" changes to "Search for Devices" once there is no other devices assigned to the program. In other words if you were "stuck" with the "install" button, the program would change to "search for devices" once the last device was deleted.

I read another post where you had done this. I'm in no hurry right now since the updates are all done. I will be waiting to see if t923347 has anything Garmin suggests. If nothing I'll try your method to see if it clears the command buttons to where I can manually check for updates again.

Thanks,

Before I did the repair I sent an email to Garmin. The return email said they would get back to me within 3 days. Will let you know if they say anything that will help.

Dear Mary Arledge,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to assist you with this. If your maps properly installed to your computer, you should be able to access them in MapSource by clicking View, then Switch to Product. 2012.20 should be listed there. If not, please follow the steps below to reinstall the map:

Connect your device to the computer
Sign into your myGarmin Account
Click the "myMaps" tab
Click "Download History"
Click "Download" next to the map version 2012.10
Choose to install using Option 2 (The Garmin Map Update Application)

If you need additional assistance, please feel free to reply to this email or give us a call.

With Best Regards,

Jamie Ha.

I told them that the map did not show up in Mapsource. I guess they thought because I am a old lady and have used Mapsource for 4 years I didn't know where to look for the map. And, why would they want me to redownload the map version 2012.10 as they stated above. Must be an old caned answer.

I fixed my problem by repairing the Updater.

I am out of the country right now but canºt wait to try it out. I already got the message that the new map was ready.

to device but not to computer

I today downloaded the current version of the lifetime updater, installed it, introduced it to my Nuvi 855, and did the current map update download with the 855 still hanging on the USB cable. I selected download to both device and computer, and moved the request on computer download site from the default C: drive location to a place on my F: drive, as that is a 2 Tbyte hard drive, while C: is an 80 Gbyte SSD.

Downloading was pretty fast, indicated at just over 1 Mbyte/sec by the Windows 7 performance application, and claimed to be about 147 Mbyte/second by the updater itself(?!). One oddity is that it continued downloading past 100% complete, reaching something over 103 before moving to the next step.

After spending a good bit of time in the downloading to device segment, the application announced that it had succeeded in installing the new map to my device, but failed to install it on the computer, and advised me to try again later. But the option to download to computer only is greyed out, with a notation that you are not allowed to change this setting "while an update is in progress". Checking in BaseCamp, I indeed do not see the new map version.

Maybe changing the default map location was a problem.

If, as requested, I attach my device when I request a new install, is it going to go through the full download to my device again? Any other suggestions on how to get this map to my computer?

Useful Information? Not Sure

Except at the end of the installs for my 785 and 760, it had a pop-up and said there was an error, to try again. When i hit ok another pop-up came up and said the update was successful. As far as I can tell everything is OK. -- snip --

I'm just passing along something that I read in another forum. I don't even know if it is true or not as I haven't personally tested it.

It seem, according to the fellow, that when the error message or the un-sucessful message appeared and he was instructed to try again -- he waited a little while and the message dissappeared and his upload was successful.

I don't know any of the circumstances or which buttons he pressed -- so don't hold me accountable; but a short wait '... it koouldn't hurt'.

Someone else, from Austraila, also wrote,
"I had EXACTLY the same problem with my 3760. FYI I was using internet explorer to get to “my garmin”. I called the help line and was advised there was a problem with the download/update process when using IE and was advised to install Firefox (a free download – google is your friend) which I did. Then using Firefox I navigated to “my garmin” and then the download and update worked just fine."

Please be advised again. I have no personal knowledge in this. I have not saught the new map as yet.

That's a great improvement, not having to go on their web site to check whether updates are available...

The Lifetime map updater is free. The maps are not unless you have lifetime maps with your unit.

As posted on Garmin's site:

I've installed this. I'm now waiting for the notification.

no notification

the program did not notify me of a new update. Once I ran it manually it told me there was an update. Not much use.

Notification

Notification is only done every 7 days. If you don't have the newest version of the program you may have not been notified at all as the notification item was fixed in one of the updates.

My Experience

I am running a Windows 7 machine with an Intel I7 processor, 16 GB RAM, etc. I downloaded the latest program and had no problems. I also have life-time maps for my 1690. It recognized that I did not have the latest updates and asked if I wanted them. I said yes and started the download. During the download, my Direct TV technition was putting in Direct TV to my new house and used the wrong cable from the outside. It shutdown my download. After correcting the problem and getting my internet back up, my download started again from where it left off. It seemed much quicker than I remember before. Everytime I boot my PC the small box comes up checking for updates and then goes away. If I bring up the application, it shows I am on the latest release. So far, I have had no problems.
