Garmin Releases Automated Updater for Lifetime Map Owners

For the last few months a number of us have been beta testing a new facility for lifetime map owners to download and install their map updates. Garmin released the product today and it can be downloaded from http://www.garmin.com/lifetimeupdater

Here are the details as posted on the Garmin website:

Garmin Lifetime Updater™

Maybe I'm Lucky, but...

Auto updater worked perfectly for me on Win 7, 64 bit system.

For some reason, in the past manual updates of my Nuvi 260 and Nuvi 1490T required downloading the map twice. No more, this worked great.

I got confused when the 260 no longer accepted 50 states and Canada. E-mailed Garmin late last night. They replied by the next afternoon, and explained that I needed to use SD memory, and explained how to use "map install" to load missing regions.

I think it's a good tool for the casual, or busy user.

New Map Updater Not Working

I Installed the new Map Updater and ran it. It's been running for 2-1/2 DAYS now. Just says "Preparing Files to Download. ???? I guess I'd say I like the old way better. Unfortunately, I don't see where I can do it like I used to.
i.e. I went to Garmin the way I used to and the ONLY option it gives me is for this new CRAP!
Oh..Wait, Yes I can load the old way if I want a 1 time to the unit only. (which I don't) I need it on my laptop and unit both since I use mapsource all the time. any Idea's?
Thanks, Barry G

When you use the old non-automatic update method, check the lower left corner of one of the early windows called "Install Options." There, you'll be given the choice to install to computer and GPS as well as save the installation files for other GPS units, etc. If you've already updated your GPS but not your computer, go back and redownload the update, using the Install to Computer Only Install Option.

second option

Yes, you do want to select the second option. It just means that you are doing a single install of your Lifetime map update. I used this option to update each of my two nuvi's and it worked fine.

I had a program update. I updated and instead of the manual check for maps I now have "Search for device"

How can I manual check for the map update without connecting my gps? The new program is 2.0.6

Under settings -> devices, did it save your device? You may have to connect your device once after you updated the updater for it to save.

I am running 2.0.6 also and my device shows under devices and I only have the option to check for updates on the main page.

Not sure

Not sure why you'd get the "search for device" button on an update but since you seem to have it do the following:

- look under Settings and if your device is listed there, click on the X icon to delete it.

- now, with your Nuvi attached to the computer, click on Add New

- Once the Nuvi is added to the Devices list, click Done to take you back to the main screen. It should now say Check for Updates.

- Once you see the Check for Updates box you should be able to click that button any time whether the Nuvi is attached to the computer or not.

Did just as you said and it worked great.
Thank you.

When I went to delete the gps it said an update was in progress. I deleted it and got the old error popup.

I closed the program then plugged in my nuvi, the went back into settings and it was still there so I deleted it and it deleted ok then.

I added the nuvi back and the button has "Check for updates". Thanks so much.

Maybe changing the default map location was a problem.

If, as requested, I attach my device when I request a new install, is it going to go through the full download to my device again? Any other suggestions on how to get this map to my computer?

I hoped that rebooting the computer or waiting a couple of days would show other options, but when that did not happen I reluctantly connected my Nuvi 855 again. What followed was a bit comical.

It announced that my 855 (a 4Gbyte device) which in fact already had the full coverage update on, lacked sufficient memory for the full update, and offered me the 49 state version instead. The good news is that in ungrayed the download target section, so I was able to specify computer only, which just might leave my full North America version intact on the 855. Despite the fact that my C drive with 16 Gbytes free obviously has room for more, at this stage I found no option to switch back from 49 state to other version.

Note that if Junction Views are useful to you, that you can download and install a humongous JV file to replace your 855's tiny 50-ish MB JCV file that came with the map update. If your nuvi is short of room (and it will be, unless you've removed most unneeded voice and help files), you can install and run the Junction View file from a SD card installed in the 855. Check the other threads here for downloading and installing the 765-ish MB JCV file made available from Garmin today.

The new, large JCV file is 752MB. You would need at least a 2GB card. Personally, I'd look for a 4GB or 8GB as they are so cheap now.

According to the Garmin site, on the specs tab, the 855 takes a microSD card. If your camera uses a microSD card then it should work in your Garmin.

I downloaded the 752 Mbyte JCV file, and discovered when I went to download it to my 855 that the update process had blown away much stuff. For one thing, there was no JCV file! And enough other stuff was missing that I had 770 Megabytes reported free by Windows _after_ I had downloaded the big new JCV file. I'll get a chance to try it out tomorrow and see whether all is well or not. I did back up the entire Nuvi before starting the 2012.20 update. If things seemed maimed perhaps I should try over-writing the Nuvi with my backup, then starting the update process all over again, not using the new updater.

305 MB free on 855.

Just as a point of reference, I have the full CN NA 2012.20 map and the 752 MB JCV file on my nuvi 855 internal memory. I still have 305 MB of free space. Everything is working great with more Junction views than I ever saw in the earlier versions.

Before I started the map update, I did remove all the non-English voice and text files and the extra vehicle files that I don't use. I also deleted all the .SUM diagnostic checksum files. I do not store any .JPG pictures, .MP3 music or audiobooks in the internal memory ... they are all on the SD card.

Although I was critical of Garmin (in other posts) for giving us the crippled JCV file, and I still think they handled this issue poorly, I will give them credit for eventually doing the right thing and providing the full coverage JCV file to users who are willing to take the necessary steps to make it fit.

I will give them some creedence for releasing the 752MB file but I will also retain some scepticism until Garmin earns back my trust by providing an optional full coverage JCV file with the 2012.30 update for ALL "users who are willing to take the necessary steps to make it fit", not just owners of the 7x5 and related units.

retry using the older installer worked

archae86 wrote:

I did try the Nuvi as it was left by the updater plus my copying of the big .jcv file. My personal waypoints were still there, and track logs not lost, and on the two Interstate exits I used high quality junction views popped up at the expected time.

So on getting home I tried to get things back to normal (recall that the install to my computer failed, so neither BaseCamp nor Mapsource offered me 2012.2, plus my Nuvi was missing lots of standard files). I went to MyGarmin, chose the "less preferred" download option not using the new lifetime updater, and changed the options to included downloading both to computer and device. It apparently found the as-downloaded file(s), as it spent less than five minutes in the download phase. After something like a half hour, it announced success. Sure enough, BaseCamp and MapSource both now offer 2012.2, and my Nuvi still works. It was back to having the small .jvc file (52,329,657 bytes), and now had just 743 Mbytes of free space--so this looks like a normal install, unlike the state my previous try of the lifetime updater left me in. I just deleted the small .jcv file and copied in once again the big one. When finished this left my 855 with 40.8 Mbytes of free space, as reported by Windows, so it may not in all cases be necessary for an 855 owner to delete things before doing using the big file without an SD card.

The voice folder seemed to combine the most favorable combination of files big enough to matter and reasonable safety in identifying deletion candidates (I don't expect to require either Afrikaans or Bulgarian soon). Just permanently deleting (shift + del) all files in the voice folder not starting the file name with English got me up to 290 MB free space indicated by Windows--which should be enough assuming I continue not to download pictures, sound files, or truly huge amounts of point of interest data.

I like the idea of the updater, and hope that with enough user input or further testing and revision it will become a robust method for most users.

Garmin's Lifetime Map Updater

I use a Mac and installed the Garmin updater a few weeks back after seeing this thread. Took a trip from home (CO) to Lake Tahoe (CA) and back and cranked up my Mac. Nothing special happened. Today I went on the Internet to Garmin's Web site and checked to see if new maps were available for my Nüvi 2350LMT. Sure enough, a new set was. I followed the guidance on the Web page which suggested I download and install the updater again. I did and nothing happened. I tried the routine again with the same results. Then I slid Activity Monitor's window away from the upper right corner of my monitor and discovered a dialog box asking whether I wanted to install the new map set. Clicked on the "Yes Sir" button and went for my morning walk. When I got back the new maps had been successfully installed.

Now I'm wondering if Garmin's Lifetime Map Updater had been trying to tell me new maps were available for the past week. Maybe a audible alert would help folks like me with cluttered desktops.

Just Sayin'.
Bill

what happens if you shut off your computer

For me, it picked up where it stoped.
Finshed loading.
Found the satellites but was lost no working map,no POI's.
Reinstalled map and all was well.

Auto updater

Seems like Garmin is going the way TomTom did with
all their new units, although Garmin still let the user choose between manual or auto update.
TomTom new interface, called "My TomTom" is the ONLY mean of accessing the new GPS series.

Pro: For those who don't care about manipulating their unit other than keeping up to date, it can't get any easier. When you connect via usb, My TomTom starts your default browser, initialy ask to set-up an account, then advise as to what is available for your unit, either map or system updates. Whether you update or not is your choice.

Con: You have absolutely NO CONTROL over you GPS other than that; everything goes through My TomTom;
Maps, POI, Voices, System.
You unit is not even recognised as a device on the USB port
Your account is tied to ONE unit. Don't try to update a different unit on that account, it just does not work. No free map updates possible if you haven't somehow already paid for it, either by buying map updates or a unit sold with lifetime maps.
If you have more than one unit, you must set-up a different account for each. (very easy but still...)
Total control for TomTom!
Just hope for you Garmin users that Garmin does not follow suit..though they now have one foot pointing in that direction.
To me, this is now all a moot point; I didn't like that approach so the 2505TM went back to the store after 2 weeks.
I'll hang-on to my old GO920 that I can manipulate the way I like, but then, one as to keep up with modern time, so I bought a Asus Transformer tablet,
loaded it with Navigon's Navigator for Android, and I now have the best of both world: free standing GPS
with a huge 10" screen, plus when connected to the net, all the goodies from google.

Life is so sweet...

Garmin vs TOMTOM

Got a new laptop and had to install all the Garmin software and the new LifeTime updater, worked great told me there was a update ready hooked up and ran. but looking at Garmins site They are going the way of TomTom , no more free POI, Have a 760 with full SD slot, works great in Picture viewer or Mp3 mode, there is a map youcan download to save all your traveled routes instead of keeping them on the GPS. I have one trip with over 7,000 miles works great, and frees up a lot of space

Your choice sounds reasonable. Keep reading posts here on POI Factory and you'll learn very quickly when the next map update is available to be able to download and install it manually.

Thanks for the info, worked

Thanks for the info, worked for me.

Used it once... now uninstalled

Just my 2¢ worth...

In installed the updater a while ago so that I won't have to manually check every few weeks or months for map updates, however I don't really like another service to run in the background when there is rather little activity. Unlike a security updater for instance.

Secondly I get a brief popup upon startup about a new map being available, which is not the case.

Coupled with the a.m. services reasons I decided to uninstall and save the resources it occupies.

For the typical 1-GPS unit owner I personally think there is little benefit in this app.

Like I said, just my 2¢ worth

Cheers

Time would have been better spent

Time would have been better spent allowing more options to the regular updater. For example, allowing map updates to go to the SD card. Not much that Garmin does makes sense.

Updater updates

Why doesn't the lifetime updater check for updates of the lifetime updater in addition to map updates? My lifetime updater was still on version 2.0.6 and I had to manually check for updater updates and it updated to 2.0.11. Seems kinda dumb.

I honestly tried using that

I honestly tried using that program, but it uses some background processes using graphics card resources (just like Firefox or Skype or similar apps do).

normally you wouldn't noticed, but for some time I used 2 video cards in SLI mode (they run in tandem) and I couldn't toggle between SLImode on vs off without stopping the automatic updater process first.

If you consider yourself an advanced user, you can use the MSCONFIG command:
Click on Start (bottom left of screen) > Run and then type MSCONFIG into the Run dialog box that apperars. Then click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Another possibility is the uninstall the Lifetime Updater. Once uninstalled, it can, of course, be re-installed at some later date. You really don't need it as you can use other Garmin programs to update your maps.

If you are interested in how to do an uninstall, let us know and we can provide instructions.
A dialog for "System Configuration Utility" will appear. Click on the "Startup" tab at the top and a listing of all the programs that run at startup will appear. Find the Updater and uncheck the box to its left.

I prefer a free program called Autoruns from SystemInternals. For those who are leery of programs from the web, I will get you to Autoruns from Microsoft itself.

  • In your browser type www.microsoft.com into the address bar.

  • when you get to the Microsoft website, type "autoruns" (without the quotes) into the search bar (which should have already checked the option to "search Microsoft.com" only).
  • The top option ought to be "Autoruns for Windows" linking to
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
    Follow this link

  • Download Autoruns
  • The dialog box that will appear indicates that it wants to place autoruns.zip somewhere. I usually point these downloads to a folder on my C:\ drive which I have named "MyDownLoads" - placing the download into a sub-folder of "MyDownLoads" called "Autoruns".
  • Once the download completes, "extract" the files from the zip archive into the Autoruns folder itself. Once you have extracted the files you can delete the zip file and the program called autorunsc.exe.
  • Launch autoruns.exe from this folder. There is no installation.

After Autoruns completes, click on the "Logon" tab and you will see all of the programs that are run when you start your computer. One of these will be the Garmin Lifetime Updater. Uncheck the box next to it and close Autoruns. The Updater will no longer run at startup. However, whenever you find out that there is a new update (by following poi-factory threads), you can use Autoruns to re-check the Updater box again and the next startup will include it.

You might want to look around and see what else is running at startup. You will be surprised. For example, I use TurboTax to prepare my tax returns. After I had filed my return last April, I happened to run Autoruns and found that Intuit (the maker of TurboTax) was checking every startup for updates to TurboTax. Naturally, i did not need this to occur - especially since I would be getting a new version of TurboTax for next years taxes. Likely Google, Adobe and others are doing startup checks for updates. While you may want them to do so, I did not, so I unchecked all of them.

Another possibility is to uninstall the Lifetime Updater completely and use other Garmin programs to update the maps whenever new releases occur.

If you would like instructions on how to do that, let us know and we will provide instructions.

Updater

I am deleting it. It keeps on popping up when there are no new updates. It is getting to be real annoying.

Great...now Garmin has a new way to >>

screw up my computer...no thanks!

"You can't get there from here"

Not sure why some are having such a problem ...

Strange, I have it installed on both a newer, fairly powerful desktop computer and an old, decidedly unpowerful laugh out loud laptop. It neither pops up annoyingly nor uses any significant amount of resource on either one. I'd hate to scare people away from trying it by having only negative comments here. btw, no affiliation w/ Garmin and am not even recommending the updater. Just giving another side of the story.
