Garmin Releases Automated Updater for Lifetime Map Owners

For the last few months a number of us have been beta testing a new facility for lifetime map owners to download and install their map updates. Garmin released the product today and it can be downloaded from http://www.garmin.com/lifetimeupdater

Here are the details as posted on the Garmin website:

Garmin Lifetime Updater™

The no-hassle way for devices with nüMaps Lifetime™ subscriptions to get map updates.

Garmin Lifetime Updater continually checks for available map updates and automatically downloads them to your computer. It then alerts you right on your desktop when files are ready to install.

Downloads files automatically to your computer.
No sign-in required.
No web browser required.
Advanced options let you specify download speed and schedules.

There are alert prompts

For example, when I go to shutdown and I haven't saved a doc, I get a message asking if I want to continue with the shutdown and/or save the doc. Or if I am downloading and I go to shutdown, a similar message saying the download will be interrupted, asking me if I want to continue. This happens with any app, so it appears to be an OS thing, not necessarily a Garmin thing.

I can't see how any OS today can let a user shutdown with something like a download going on. I know the Mac OS doesn't let it happen without an advisory message.

Not an issue at all.

And what's with all this concern over resources??? Geez, I just went and checked on my MacBookPro. I've kept an eye on it for a few minutes and it uses 0.0% CPU, and once in a while flashes 0.1% CPU. Again, not an issue, even for the power users.

Anyways, this updater appears to work just like the Mac system updater, which is just fine.

So what happens if you shut off your computer during the download?

Well, think about it for a second slick. The program runs in the background. Unless Garmin included some kind of prompt, folks won't know when a update is being downloaded. Considering map updates are over 1gb its gonna take a while to download updates. So its easy to see the situation where someone shuts off their computer while an update is downloading.

But then again you're the guy who thinks your 2 inch handheld is gods answer to gps devices. So something like this would NEVER happen to you.

If install update to computer only

Would the auto-update then fire up Mapsource to install the map and JCV files when the various "life-time map" GPS's are connected to the computer?

And what about the "limited memory" "smaller JVC files" Garmin is installing in the memory-limited 14xx series?

In my case, I have two different GPS's that would qualify for the life-time updates, but on my 1450 (as we all know), there isn't room for the entire update or the "full" JCV file.

I think I'm going to stick with the old fashion way of updating ... for now.

Automated Updater For Lifetime Map Owners

I just installed the Mac version for my 2350LMT and it worked like a charm. I wish it had been released years ago. I elected not to have the app launch at startup because I want to keep those startup apps to a minimum.

Thanks for the announcement.

for the reminder.

New Maps

I just got a message from Automated Updater that new maps were available. My maps are up to date according to My Garmin. Someone is lying.

Auto updater

I am going to give it a try when the maps come out again. I guess time will tell if it works or not,

What he said! this site is better for finding when updates have been released. I don't object to having additional processes running, but given their spotty history with email updates I'll let some of you brave souls beta test it first.

Lifetime Map Updater

I think I'll wait and see how it works out for everybody before I donwload the program.

Don't

Don't really understand why anyone wouldn't at least try this program. It takes basically no CPU cycles, it has been beta tested for months, and really just makes what was a 3 step process (going to myGarmin account ,downloading the old Updater program, running it to download and install the maps) into a one step process (keep the lifetime Updater running in background).

Personally, I think the whole idea around this new program is to allow Garmin to spread out the load on their servers when a new map update is released. So instead of all of us suffering because the servers are so slow, we now no longer have to worry about it as the maps will just arrive.

After all, only one of you can be first to have the maps installed, or to open the thread here that says they are available. grin and even if the program is a complete failure, your fallback position is the old 3 step system. There doesn't seem to be a downside to, at least, giving the Lifetime Updater a tryout.

Well, it seems that the beta testing didn't work out too well because two members have already reported an issue with the program!!

Just downloaded it

It was a smooth download.

I checked update to computer and device.

Now I can't wait to get a new map from Garmin!!! (I think)

There are 2 posts in this thread where folks got a notice that new maps were available. Of course there isn't any new maps, just the ability to redownload the current release. That's the only 2 things I've seen while monitoring 4 forums.

If that's all there are, I'm not sure why it was mentioned as a problem at all question

LOL. Are you serious? The program is designed to do one thing and one thing only - download NEW map updates. Two people have already experienced false positives. How can you not consider that a problem?!?

thanks for the info

thanks for the info

Problems anyone?

Installed the program and it will not recognize either of my two Garmin units. connected them to computer via usb cable to add devices and it say cannot find devices

Are your Garmin USB Drivers up to date?

If not installed or up to date, you can get the driver here:

myGarmin

schwahnie wrote:

When you log into your myGarmin account with a device attached, is it seen? If seen on myGarmin, then we need to look towards the new autoupdater program. If not seen even on myGarmin, then you may have a more generic nuvi or computer problem unrelated to the new software. Note that myGarmin requires the Garmin Communicator browser add-on. myGarmin:

https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm?service=https%3A%2F...

Are both of your GPS units registered with your Garmin account?

What computer OS are you using? Do you meet the software's requirements:

Windows System Requirements
◦Windows XP SP3 or newer, Microsoft .NET 4 Client Profile (included)
◦1024x768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
◦High speed Internet access
◦USB cable and Garmin GPS device with nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription
◦May require up to 10 GB free disk space

Mac System Requirements
◦Intel-based Mac running OS 10.5.8 or higher (Tiger and PowerPC Macs should use the Garmin Map Update application instead)
◦1024x768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
◦High speed Internet access
◦USB cable and Garmin GPS device with nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription
◦May require up to 10 GB free disk space

Finally, just to be clear, do both of your units have paid lifetime numaps subscriptions?

will try again

I will try again thanks!

When you do, if you've been using a USB hub, I'd suggest not doing that. Things have always worked better for me with my GPSr devices plugging directly into the computer and not via a usb hub.

Updated both units software and made sure all programs etc were current version. both devices are seen by Web updater but still cannot be seen by the program. Yes both units are lifetime too

I am giving this a go. Installed and I see it check each morning on boot for updates. Next download, I will see how much I like it.

Well, that certainly makes it sound like there's an issue with the new auto-updater software or with Garmin's database of units with lifetime numaps that I expect the auto-update must reference and that it somehow is missing both your units' serial numbers and registered lifetime map update.

It'll be interesting to see what you find in the future.

What OS

What OS is your computer using? If it's XP then you need Service Pack 3 for the Updater to work properly.

It makes sense to me to be able to redownload your current up to date map since that's what your paying for. If you Nuvi screws up, at least you can get the latest update without contacting Tech Support.

Updated Version Available NOW!

Garmin pushed v2.0.2 out this morning. You can update using the “Check for updates” link on the About page of the current version or by re-downloading from the Lifetime Updater page.

NOTE- I received the above in response to asking the Map Technology Team about concerns here with folks using XP having problems with the program seeing their devices. They say that the new version was dealing with a similar issue.
