Can a Garmin 1350 play wav files?

Seems to me that last year my 1350 was able to play .wav files (e.g. "Tim Horton's ahead") but now it won't. Garmin tells me that a 1350 has never been able to play .wav files. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

POI Loader?

Have you installed the new version of POI Loader (2.6.1 or 2.6.0)? If so the default install directory in Windows has changed, so you need to move the SOX.EXE utility program to the new folder where POI Loader is installed (probably in C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader; was previously in C:\Garmin).

you are correct

Garmin's position has to be "WAV files are not supported" as they do not support or provide the SOX program. So, even though the unit will play WAV files using SOX, they have to say the alert files are not supported.

My 1350

My 1350 plays wav files. Of course you need the sox.exe file as others have said.

Fred

Interesting. I am using

Interesting.
I am using Poiloader261 and sox 14.3.1 (I think) and both programs and associated dlls are loaded in the same directory. How can you tell sox has processed the wav file correctly?

Thanks for the advice and answers so far.

It has to be in certain format

I had the same problem before. After many tries, I have found only certain format of the *.wav file can be played in the newer Garmin devices.

File Type: wav
Bit Rate: 705 kbps
Audio Sample Size: 16 Bit
Channel: 1 (Mono)
Audio Sample Rate: 44 KHz
Audio Format: PCM

If your *.wav file is not the right format, you can use Audacity to change it.

Wav File

You can also go here and create your very own in the correct format smile

Double check these files

Make sure that you indeed have 14.3.1 and not 14.3.2. (14.3.2 does not work for me.)

Do you have all three of these SOX dll files in the PoiLoader folder along with sox.exe?

libgomp-1.dll
pthreadgc2.dll
zlib1.dll

The above is working for me with POI Loader 2.6.1 and my 285W

The plot thickens... First

The plot thickens... First off let me say thanks to the responders - good advice and information.

I think I have made a correct .wav file (as per above posts).

If I do NOT upload the .wav file (in a geocache subdirectory not the traffic subdirectory) then redlight and speed alerts work correctly, visual - little label first gray then red, audio - pinging then higher freq pinging).

However if I upload the .wav file then redlight and speed alerts DO NOT work.

The relight and speed files are .csv format.

Very puzzling...

@phlatlander

Clarify for us what you are doing. Saying "upload the .wav file" is not something I can relate to.

When I want a sound file associated with a POI file, I name the .wav file the same as the POI (say a .csv) file except for the extension. For example, I have a subfolder called FastFood and within that subfolder I have
Krystal.csv
Krystal.wav
Wendys.csv
Wendys.wav

This subfolder is one of several within the folder MyPOIs. MyPOIs is the folder to which POILoader is pointed whenever it runs.

You could download any .wav file from POIFactory and give it the correct name for your situation. It does not - at this stage of debugging - matter what the .wav files says. It only matters that it work.

Go get the one here

That's exactly what I

That's exactly what I do.

The .wav is in the same subfolder and is named exactly the same as its .csv or .gpx file.

Everything else loads fine (i.e. associated .bmp files).

I did not know this until you posted it!

Just a thought

Make sure your not using double extensions.
If your using windows xp as I am, do the folowing :
Press start, control panel, folder options and remove the check mark beside hide extensions for known file types.

If that and every thing else doesn't work send Charlie an email and your guaranteed he'll find the solution. grin

Check and make sure you are

Check and make sure you are using the correct version of SOX.EXE. The newest one did not work for me. Use version 14.0.1 (there are no DLL files, just sox.exe)

Sox.exe

Here is the process I use and you can download the sox.exe from it http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 and like JustinCase380@g...
posted no dll require.Make sure about the double extensions like canuk posted.

Excellent suggestions from

Excellent suggestions from Justincase380 and Charlesd45.

Playing .wav files works, Sox14.0.1 is the version that works. Thanks for saving what little hair I have left !!!!

The reason I started all this was to be able to get a TourGuide (proximity radius) working on a 1350. Anybody have any luck in this regard?

Thanks again for all the good support and I will be adding my own poi group in a few days.

i'm not certain about the 1350

I have an 885 and a 200, both definitely older models, but those two will play wav files as the audio for a TourGuide. Charlie has his Cracker Barrel file loaded on his unit as a TG and he uses a 265, so it does work on these units. I haven't read any reports of people using TG files on the 1XXX models.

Can't speak

Can't speak specifically about the 1350 but I've used TG on my 1490 with no problems.

Just like other users have posted TourGuide should work with no problem if you set the radius alert distance correct. Here is example how I set them up.Remember TourGuide has to be spelled just like I have it here.See TourGuide Cracker Barrel below.I set radius at 2 miles. That will give me the alert from the interstate.

My Poiis=Main Folder

Resturants=Subfolder
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.csv
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.bmp
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.wav
McDonalds.csv
McDonalds.bmp
McDonalds.wav

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

Finally got a .gpx TourGuide

Finally got a .gpx TourGuide to work with .wav file (seems I misplaced the sox file...). I built a .csv TourGuide from the .gpx file and it seems to work as advertised. I really want to build a big .csv TourGuide that will contain off-beat tourist attractions and recommended restaurants.

Thanks again for all the assistance.

Gpx

If you are going to use gpx files you may want to look at this http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28521 .All files that I have alerts for I use this method because it allows me to run poiloader in express mode instead of manual by building the alert distance into the file.

There is a file on site for off beat attraction http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2661 and lots of restaurants.

Thanks for that

Thanks for that Charlesd45.

I am comfortable with Notepad and html so etc. makes sense.

I think I will check out doing .csv files with Notepad and I don't mind using Poiloader in the manual mode. What I need to do is to get rid of my extra copies of Poiloader and Sox...
