Can anyone help - please.
I have purchased a map update for my 1347T but when I ran the Garmin Map update v2.6.6 it crashed on a screen which stated that it needs to restart to complete. When I state it crashed I mean both the "Search for device" link and the "Continue" button are greyed out. I left the garmin attached to the PC by the USB port for severel hours but to no avail. Now the PC will not recognise the existence of the Garmin. I have tried emails to Garmin support but had no reply
Garmin will get back to you,
Garmin will get back to you, it takes at least 24 hrs.
I would take the battery out for a few mins and reinstall it and let it boot from scratch. Make sure it is disconnected from your computer!

Thank you for your swift responce.
I contacted Garmin on 13/4/2011 but nothing from then so far!! I bet there is no reply this week!!
How do I get to the battery? And will I need a spoon?
When connected to the car I get to a screen recomending an update then nothing!!
How!!
Thanks for your quick responce.
OK - I have NOW followed your link but too late!!
I bet I should have also run a virus check but there is nothing in the Quick Start Manual about the unit upgrade failing - I wonder why!! Thank God there are knolageable people like you who can pull the newbys out of the fire. Any other sugestions?

What Operating System and version on the PC? What browser?
Is it possible that during the update process, you computer went to sleep or into hibernation? Especially with a slow internet connection or if you leave the PC unattended during the update, temporarily setting your Power Settings to Always On is a good idea for lengthy map updates like this--ditto if you're doing an overnight battery recharge via USB.
Here's what I'd try. The big problem right now is that your PC doesn't recognize the 1347T. That needs to be fixed before you can ever attempt to update the map.
First, I'd power down and disconnect the 1347T and reboot the computer. Reconnect the 1347T and see if it's now recognized as a drive by the PC.
2nd, try a different USB port on the computer. Back-side ports are best, front ones slightly less so, and external ports on USB hubs, wireless keyboard, etc. are bad choices.
3rd, try a different USB cable between the PC and 1347T if you have one. A cable with an intermittent signal could have caused your initial map update failure. Easy to do if you have a spare cable, not-so-easy if you don't.
4th, try a hard reset of the nuvi (your 1347T is a nuvi model, yes?), then repeat the steps above:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136
5th, if all the above fail, then we're into corrupted USB drivers on the computer that need to be reinstalled or some such thing. But try options 1-4 first. Good luck and please report back especially if you succeed so we know what fixed it for you.
PS--I can't find any info on a nuvi 1347T or even a 1347 on Google or at Garmin's site. Can you provide any info about your GPS?

Although always a great idea, a backup won't help the OP since currently his PC doesn't recognize the nuvi so it won't be available as a drive that backup files can be restored to. The first order of business is to get the PC and nuvi to communicate.
.
The OP should probably clarify the model number on the nuvi. I see no trace of a 1347T on the Garmin US site and Google brings up pretty much nothing (except for this topic).

The comment was made in case the OP did do a back up. If he/she did then placing the original files back on would have got the unit running.
The next step (as suggested) is to get the PC and nuvi to communicate.

Some thoughts
My PC is running WinXP and Firefox v 3.6.16.
Sorry I made a typo, the Garmin is a nuvi 1340T not a 1347.
It is unlikely that the PC will have hibernated (not set to), but the screen saver might have blanked after several hours but as I'm using broadband the download probably would not take that long.
The hard reset together with use of a different USB port has resylted in the PC recognising the Garmin so thanks very much for your advice. Funily I have had no other USB issues!
I have now rerun the G Map Uploader and again it has crashed but at a different place (Windows unexpected error .....must close)!!
Is there a way of manually downloaging and installing the map upgrade?
Again thanks CraigW for the advice.
I am also on XP pro and

Since you are using Firefox, it could be some addons you have in there.
Try running Firefox in safemode. Go to start/ all programs/ mozilla/ mozilla firefox safemode.

Well, that's good news...to a degree :-(

OK, three more thoughts.
1) Does your PC have Service Pack 3 installed? It's needed for those using Windows XP.
2) How much free space do you have on your computer's hard drive? For the North American map, the downloaded file is around 2GB and during installation, 7GB* of space are needed to succeed. I assume you're trying to install a European map so the capacities may be different, but too little hard drive space could cause a failure mid-update.
Thought 3: The Map Update (North America for sure and probably Europe) on a PC requires Microsoft's .NET Framework. I and others have found that the .NET Framework on many PCs is corrupted or an older version, and especially for corrupted versions, Garmin Map update will fail with no error message or a pretty nondescript one. In the event you believe your hard drive has enough extra space and your Windows XP is up-to-date with Windows Updates, you may want to look into this from Garmin:

Odd, the above doesn't appear as a link, but a copy&paste to your browser should bring up the FAQ from Garmin.

Thanks for the link. Good one.
[Edit] As I think about this more, I wonder if the browser has any effect on the failure. For the North America map and users in the States, the browser does do the initial download of Garmin's Download Manager (about 3MB in size, if memory servers). Once the download manager is launched to start the 2GB-ish download, isn't the browser out of the picture?
I think the GDM still puts downloads in the computer's Temporary Internet Files so that clearing this cache can be of use yet, but once a user is beyond the tiny 3MB manager download, isn't the choice of browser and add-ons irrelevant? Just asking. Then again, things may be totally different for our users updating 'Cross the Pond maps...
Have you actually called
Have you actually called them? If you emailed them maybe your query went to the bottom of the stack because someone there didn't know.
Well, that's good news...to a degree :-( Robin.Astell spoke too
I spoke too soon the Garmin has disapeared again!!
I have reset several times and tried several USB ports but still can't see the Garmin nor can the Garmin Map uploader which hangs on the first screen.
FYI I am running Win XP SP3 and useing USB ports for mouse, keyboard, external HD and printer all without problems so it is unlikely that the USB driver is the problem if all else is working.
I wonder if you have any other ideas - I hope so.
Incidently still no reply from Garmin!!
I'm sorry ti hear this

Darn, bad news. The one item that's not been swapped out or tested is the USB cable. Do you have any way to get a different USB cable to run between the PC and GPS to determine if there's an intermittent break in one of the wires?
All usb cables are not equal
I have discovered over the years that some usb cables work with some but not all printers, cameras, etc, etc....
It is terrible to speak well and be wrong. -Sophocles snɥɔnıɥdoɐ aka ʎɹɐƃ
Not the cable
I found a NEW USB cable but still Garmin is invisable. To check I conected up my old mobile phone on the same USB cable and up it came!!
Incidently when I reboot the Garmin I get a splash screen with the model number then a screen saying it is "loading map" then a NAVTEC licence screen but nothing more is this right?!!
Any other suggestions?
Short of calling Garmin, one more thought...

Some folks find that a given PC just doesn't work well with map updates to their GPS. One thought would be to see if you could visit a friend, relative or neighbor with a PC and broadband internet and see if you can update your map using another computer. Even if you don't want to do this all the time, it'd let you know that it may be an issue with your computer rather than cables, GPS units, etc. Given the length of an update process, you may need to take a six-pack, cake, or snacks of some sort to pass the time. Oh wait--you folks eat biscuits for sweets, right?
First the good news..... Then the bad!!
At last I've found a laptop which after installing .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (following prompt from be GMU (Garmin Map Updater) could make contact with my errent Garmin. Actually it required the following sequence:
1. Disconect Garmin and reboot PC and Garmin and start GMU.
2. Do a hard reset of Garmin but do NOT accept the locale.
3. Attach Garmin to PC. - I was lucky at this point PC recognised Garmin. Click on "Search for Device" on GMU and follow directions to update map. This takes several hours but finally GMU states "map sucessfully updated"!!
The bad news is my Garmin now will freeze either at the NAVTEC licence screen, the "Warning" screen or inputting GO TO location. Is it possible to reinstall the Garmin OS?
Having got this far I wonder what will be on my birthday list, perhaps it sounds like a drum?!!

Frustrated at not being able to use my Garmin I decided to update the Software - big mistake!!
The only way to connect it to my PC is to reset the unit and connect it to the PC before the "Select a locale" screen, which i did.
I was delighted when Garmin's MyDashbourd recognised it and agreed there was a software upgrade available. I followed the instructions to the "Software Update Complete" screen. It directs me to disconect the unit and to wait for it to reboot(on no account should I turn it on or off). When I did this the Garmin reverted to the "Select a local" screen and will not proceed any further. Do you know if I can switch off or if there is any other action I can take?
Did you try contacting Garmin?

Try contacting Garmin at:
United Kingdom
For all of United Kingdom users and customers in unlisted countries in Europe, Africa and Middle East
Monday - Friday: 8:30 AM - 17:30 PM Western European Time (GMT/UTC)
Phone (freephone from UK landline): 0808 238 0000
Phone (within UK): 0870 850 1242
As it is a "new" unit - I'm assuming it is within the warranty period, they should replace it. Here in the state (or colonies as you Brits sometimes refer to us) it take about a week to ship it to them and get another unit in return.

Great idea....but!!
Thanks for your responce.
I have tried contacting Garmin but today and Monday are holidays here!!!
Anyway my Garmin was registered July 24 2009 so it isn't covered by its original warranty. However it worked fine till I upgrade the map so perhaps it will be replaced anyway - I'll let you know.

Given all that you've tried, I do fear that a call to Garmin, either for updating help or a replacement, does seem to be the only option left. Sorry.
Much a do about everything........
Since my last post I have had to be very paitent!!
Garmin eventually came back to me as a result of my original message to Support but not till I had already phoned them and been told that I should have to return my unit for repair at a cost of £43.33. This in spite of the fact that the unit working properly up to the time of the map upgrade.
Fortunatly as a result of my original email contact through the Garmin web site, I was subsiquently advised that Garmin Europe were "prepared to take the extraordinary step to replace my device under warranty"
I'll wait and see what happens.
All's well that ends well ......in the end.
I have today recieved a new (referbished) unit which seems to work and have the latest maps.
What a pitty that I have had to wait over two public holidays , when I would have valued my GPS, but that is the sort of service we seem to have to accept.

I hope this is of use to others.
