Newborn

I was born yesterday with the arrival of a Garmin 1450. My first GPS. I'm getting around it okay but I have a couple of questions and I appreciate your help.

I downloaded some POI's, looks good. But I haven't actually taken the GPS out of my house.

When I am using the gps to take me from point A to B, will the POI I downloaded alert me? Or do I have to go to Extras and select which POI I'm interested in finding.
IE: Things that would not normally show up in Garmin POI say, Diners Dives and Drive ins, or Redbox?

I did not download any pics for the files. What will show up?

I don't think the 1450 will allow me to get 'custom' alerts. It doesn't have MP3, correct?

Thanks, Jim

Custom pois

If you have set up your alerts using poiloader in the manual mode and have set a distance for a alert. You will be alerted for the custom poi if you are driving on the same road that the coordinates are located and they are no more then 50 to 75 ft off the road of travel and you have not selected Go.If you have selected Go to a custom poi and have set up the alert. You will receive the alert based on the distance set.You can increase that by using TourGuide in the file name to give you a radius alert instead of along the route.Example Cracker Barrel located off the interstate.Using the correct radius distance you can receive the alert from the interstate.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

You can also build alert distance in using gpx files see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28521 allowing you to run poiloader in express mode.

Certain key words in the file name give you alerts of 1/4 mile like redlight and speed.Look at the poiloader help section for more info and other information that will come in handy.

For custom alerts see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .You are correct your unit does not play mp3 but you can use so.exe and wav files to get the voice alert.

Download sox.exe and put it

Download sox.exe and put it in the same folder as your POI Loader is installed in. You can now add any .wav file for a sound alert. Just include the wav file with the POI.csv file and name them exactly the same with the appropriate extension.

If you want to vary the distance that you are alerted then use manual in POI Loader. Then you can set the distance to what you want - otherwise it will use the defaults.

If you have just loaded the POI file and did not set it up as a proximity alert the icon WILL NOT show up in the GPS screen UNLESS you are zoomed in on the screen to one of the closest zoom levels. If the POI is set for proximity alert you WILL see the icon at ordinary zoom levels.

I have a 1490 and it is the same as the 1450 with the addition of bluetooth.

Enjoy!

Jim, if your 1450 supports route simulation, you can sit at home and experience what the screen looks like when you do the real thing. Just set you current location to a spot 1/2 mile from a known location and choose a destination just past it, on the same road. Start the simulation and you will get whatever alerts you've loaded.

Thanks and more ?'s

Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the answers.
Only 2 days old but I'm learning fast!
I took the big G for a ride today. Had to go to Sac (from Tahoe).
Worked much faster than I had anticipated.
First problem was if I looked at the map while in the mountains, I got carsick.

I went to my 'Extras' clicked one of my custom POIs and a list appeared. But not necessarily with the one in the direction I was going at the top. So I scrolled, found the one in the direction I was traveling and put it in as a via. Yea!

Questions:
I use Mac, is there a program like sox for Mac?
I guess I should put in icons for my POIs.
As I add POIs to my POI folder and use poiloader, I guess it uploads the whole folder again? It seems to take more time with each upload.

Thanks for the sim tip. I first tried it and thought, who's going to take hours for the whole trip to see the POI.

Happy trails, Jim

Some mac user have posted

Some mac user have posted they didn't have to add the sox.exe.They only had to use the wav file for the alerts.

Your custom poi file in the

Your custom poi file in the Garmin is re-written each time that you add another poi file to the folder. One way around this is to go into that folder on your Garmin through your computer and rename the file that is there now to some other name - with the same extension. What I do is load each file in one at a time and then rename that file on the garmin - it still works just fine with any name. Then I have a separate file on the Garmin for each POI list. Otherwise keep all of your POI files on your computer in the file that you upload to the Garmin from or you will lose what you had before on the next upload.

And watch the road - not the Garmin (especially on mountain roads!) smile

One of the features on the initial search screen is a little box down at the bottom that says Near. If you press this, you are given a sub-menu that allows you to search in another city, your destination, or, along your route. Selecting "along your route" will only display locations ahead of you.
