Map still doesn't show my address, btw

Darn shame - of course I do know where I live, so it's OK...

But I can't help thinking about the poor people who come to our place for their Holiday, and I have to give them the "next door" address.

Navteq, can you please solve this ? I'm afraid the Turkey won't find its way to the kitchen crying

Have you tried to submit the missing address to Navteq trough their "Navteq Map reporter" Link on their website? The street where I live is missing from their maps, I did a report on the missing street a few days a go and still shows "In Process".
Have someone had success doing this reports?

Map update submissions

"Have someone had success doing this reports?"

Yes! I've had a few corrections that I reported to Navteq around the US and Canada, and have seen the changes a few map versions later. Some take longer than others, I have even seen a few that were fixed in the next version.

"Yes! [...] have seen the changes a few map versions later."

That is good to know, I hope my street shows in a future map update.

I just noticed that my street is missing in the Navteq site using the "map" view, but is there when I change to "satellite" view. I guess they just need to merge both.

Navteq Map reprorts

I have found that most of the time map reports do not get resolved till about 6 months to a year after after you submit them. It then takes even longer to see it on the navteq map, and even longer for Garmin to add it to their map. So for most updates (unless they're major, like a new interstate is built), it takes about 2 years to appear on a GPS.

Yes, a second line with a [1] is normal. On my 855, it's red and on my 750, it's grey, but both have the [1] there like yours.

I do note that after the [1], both of my nuvis say All, while yours states City Navigator North Americ... again. I know that my nuvis have the full North America with Canada, Mexico, etc. Since yours doesn't say All, is it possible that you installed less than the full map? Sounds unlikely since your GPS is an 855 like mine and therefore should be able to handle the full map.

You would think 3+ years would be enough time

Futility

I have come to the realization that reporting map errors to Navteq is pretty much an exercise in futility.

Are people paying for the

Are people paying for the update or do they have lifetime updates for their GPS?
It always seemed more worth it to just buy a new GPS rather then pay for a lifetime update, unless you're getting the update for free. The roads actually doesn't change much around me as well

Not time or place

I don't think insinuating that map updates are useless waste of money is appropriate in a thread for discussing one specific update.

It's the same on my 755.

Lifetime Map Updates on Stolen GPS

thrak wrote:

Sigh............ My nüvi 760 was recently lost/stolen and I had paid for lifetime updates. Garmin wouldn't transfer the subscription to the replacement unit so I had to get a NEW lifetime update subscription for the replacement unit. They told me not to remove the registration for the previous unit so it couldn't be registered by whomever has the thing now.
...

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I too had a 1490T stolen just before Thanksgiving. The irritating thing is that the receiver was on its bean-bag mount on the floor halfway under a seat, not obviously visible, and the damage to the smashed side window was more than the worth of the GPSr. Whoever it was hit other cars in our quiet neighborhood. (Someone down the street got $2000 worth of tools stolen out of his truck). Anyway, I asked Garmin if they would transfer the lifetime map updates to a replacement unit if I sent them a copy of the police report. Nope. The best they could offer was a discounted $45 subscription on the replacement unit. Luckily I was able to get a brand new 1490T, with the lifetime maps for $179 around Cyber Monday. Another irritating thing because I had paid much more for the original unit without the maps!

.

Sorry to hear but thats why i NEVER leave my 350 in the vehicle or anything of value,if they want it they'll get it locked doors or not.

The Myth on Lifetime Map Updates on Stolen GPS

Interesting and now confirmed that Garmin won't automatically transfer the lifetime updates to a replacement unit even though you can provide them with a police report.

new maps work good for me!

canuk wrote:

they won't do automatically, but do they transfer/re-assign "manually" maps (serial numbers of purchased updates) to another replacement unit's serial number?

just wondering how things work in case I ever loose mine (knock, knock I hope not).

Also, had a chance to test newest maps between NYC and Boston and they worked great, especially with updated unit's firmware which finally fixed Traffic Updates (free with some rare commercials on top of screen) and my Nuvi 275T GPS was working amazingly good like never before!

It did only one major mistake telling me to take exit 10 off some interstate highway in upstate NY (or maybe in Connecticut already, can't remember now) and then told me instantly to get back onto the same highway again.

Besides that zero major problems on highways (return trip was flawless), and it always chose fastest (as programmed) routes avoiding traffic ("Heavy Traffic delay on route detected, re-calculating" or similar warning). Loved it!

I had a similar incident last month. I emailed an enquiry about moving the lifetime map code from stolen unit to a new unit. Email reply turned me down cold.

I phoned a few days later and spoke with a very helpful young woman. As above, I was offered the reduced price of $45.00 for a "lifetime map" on the new unit. Garmin bends their rules in allowing the reduced price. Garmin has no obligation (other than good customer relations) to provide the reduced price.

and so much for "lifetime map updates" unless someone wants to use the same GPS unit for their whole life ... what a joke...

Just finished the install

2011.3 is in. I just finished the install. Took me quite a while but it went smoothly. I finally bought the lifetime update card when it hit $60...

I do want to thank several of the contributors here for the fine bits and pieces of installation (including the method to stay at 4.80 firmware). These posts smoothed out the process nicely. Last update I did was during my free upgrade well over a year ago.

I guess we see things differently

The policy is quite clear, lifetime of the unit. Should I ever recover my stolen GPS the map updates would continue. I didn't mind asking for a tranfer of the code from one unit to the other. It cost me nothing to try. I also wasn't surprised when calling got a more favourable result. (that has been noted by numerous people here).

I find it hard to understand why so many are upset about the charges for the maps, lifetime or otherwise. Not that long ago such information couldn't be bought for a King's ransom.

To conclude- Garmin gave me another code for 50% off their listed price which still worked out to around $15-20 off most prices of late. I could have done a lot worse.
