What's the excitement?

koot wrote:

May I ask - why all the excitement? It sounds like it's Christmas for 1st graders! Have any of you actually seen any changes? What am I missing? Just curious............

Two things made this latest update fun and useful. First of all, you can never tell when an updated GPS will find a destination that's on a newer road or find a better route to a destination.

Second of all, with me at least, my GPS is a hobby and I enjoy updating it whenever a new firmware or map version comes along. I also look for even a lame excuse to use it for the most trivial reason. It's my hobby and I enjoy it.

It appears there's a bug in the 37xx update process. To get it to complete properly, when the update finishes, pull the USB plug *instead* of using "safely remove hardware."

From a post by t923347 on another forum:
"Myself and others with a 3790 have had problems with this update but have found a work around.

After the update completes, when you boot up your 3790 you get a message "Cannot Authenticate Maps" but when you press OK the Nuvi appears to work normally. Also when you look at the maps installed under Tools - Settings - myMaps there is no 3D buildings map listed, only the DEM and regular CN 2010.30 map. The error message appears every time you boot the Nuvi.

It appears that the workaround is to "pull" the USB cable out of the Nuvi when the update is completed and not use "safely remove hardware" (are they ever going to fix this) Sad

Unfortunately, if you've already updated your 3790 and did do a safely remove, the only way to get rid of the error message each time you turn the Nuvi on is to install the update for a second time and this time PULL the cable."

A slight hiccup

I got the map update OK for my 1490T, but about 2 hours into the download, my pc locked up. The mouse/cursor disappeared, the time froze, and the screen and pc was unresponsive. So I rebooted and started over, and then all was OK. PC is a VISTA 64 bit, which may or may not have had anything to do with it.

The change I was looking for was not there: I did not see the recently opened new bridge over the Colorado on US 93 east of Las Vegas by Hoover Dam. I guess I'll just have to follow the road signs!

I went to Mapquest and Google Maps, and didn't see a new road/bridge/bypass near Hoover Dam there either, so I either don't know where to look, or it just isn't on the maps yet!

It would be great if system worked so quick. The bridge opened 3 weeks ago, and I don't excpect to see it on the map before 2012.10 or 2012.20 comes out (April/July next year).

I am

I'd imagine

that the most changes that are readily apparent would be the POI information and not so much the roads etc. With the slow down in the housing market, there probably aren't a heck of a lot of new roads around.

Updated My 660

First, I backed up everything on my 660 to my PC before doing the map update. Here is my next installment of tracking free space after each update.

The new maps will overwrite the previous one. HOWEVER - each map release is bigger than the last which means the free space gets smaller and smaller. I have been tracking the amount of free space left on my 660 with each update. Here are my free space figures including this latest update:

For the record, this was the amount of free space remaining on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB
After 2011.10 update - 270MB
After 2011.20 update - 252MB
After 2011.30 update - 217MB

I did not have to delete any of the "optional" files like voices or vehicles to make this version fit. I installed all of North America which includes Canada and Mexico.

If you have lifetime map updates then this is what I posted on page 1 of this thread:

For all of you that logon to your myGarmin accounts and don't see 2011.30 available just select "download again" for the 2011.20 maps currently on your GPS.

This will begin the download process and at a point in that process you will see that it is, in fact, 2011.30 that is being downloaded.

I was not too surprised the new bridge wasn't on the update yet. I only heard about it on the news about 3 weeks ago, and thought, "Well, MAYBE the next update will have it." Since it would have more interest to travellers than a new subdivision somewhere, I thought it might get bumped to the top of the pile of things updated. I'm sure the road is well marked, but my GPSr may be a bit "confused" when I drive over a bridge that it doesn't know is there!

Both Bing and Google Earth show the new bridge as a construction site, not a completed bridge.

Updated last night, local hazard intersection still not fixed

Got the update last night. I was curious to see if our local hazardous intersection that was reconfigured about a year ago would show up. It hasn't yet.

For the curious, it's Calif Hiway 101 Southbound entrance ramp at Channel Drive in Montecito CA. This was an entrance ramp that put you onto the fast lane of 101 S as it came up the inside of the highway...pretty unsafe. The ramp was removed, and now the nearest road that looks like the old onramp is the OFFRAMP from 101 Northbound onto Channel Dr. We've had a few folks blindly following their GPS start to turn onto the off-ramp before realizing their mistake and taking notice of at least four signs saying WRONG WAY, backing up into traffic and other fun. Eventually all the GPS maps will be fixed and non-locals will not be lured into this potential deathtrap...but in the meantime it's a little scary.

I can see changes for some Interstate loops, and ramp configurations, as well as some major "sate highway" construction in Central Ohio, now in the 2011.3, that were not there in 2011.1 and earlier.

It seems that, at least in areas I can observe, there is about a 6-12 month gap, which is still pretty good, in my opinion. Definitely worth getting updates at least 2 times a year. Also, looking at the POI's in areas where a lot of business has been lost as well as other areas where it has moved, I can see more accurate POI's. Some POI's of out of business businesses seem to still be there: Perhaps when a business closes the corporate "marketing" department loses interest in having it removed.

I'd say you're right. I suspect there will be a lot of POI businesses (still in the updates for a long time) that are now out-of-business and no longer exist...especially restaurants, independent fast-food places, as well as a multitude of small retail and service type establishments.

koot wrote:

I didn't look through the thread to see if this was answered, but I noticed one difference between 2011.20 and 2011.30. It seems Garmin has included the US Virgin Islands, which I don't recall being selectable on 2011.20.

Garmin and NavTeq must have made a fair amount of changes besides adding the US Virgin Islands. I can no longer fit Washington state nor Hawaii on the internal memory of the 200W. I have to put those on the SD card.

2011.30 Canada city observation

I just downloaded 2011.30 NA full map to my Nuvi 775T. I then keyed in some cities across North America as destinations to see the routes from where I live (Texas). I've driven to Canada a few times, so for the heck of it I punched in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Saint John, Moncton and a few others. Oddly some of the major cities in eastern Canada in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick end up showing up twice on the city destination search. The two entries are exact duplicates, as I checked on the maps to verify that was the case. This duplication didn't happen when the destination was a city in Canada outside of these provinces, nor did it happen on any U.S. cities that I tried. This weird "feature" (bug?) may have been there on earlier map versions, but I hadn't noticed until now. The other thought I had is maybe Navteq or Garmin intentionally broke out major city names in these provinces in English and French as separate entries, and the names happen to be the same in both languages. I can only guess.
