Newbie question about setting alerts

Hello all,

I’m hoping you can clarify a question I have about setting alerts. I’ve just downloaded the “Rest Area Combined” file from this site and uploaded it on my Nuvi 1490LMT. So far so good, now I’m reading about setting alerts. My question is this: Do alerts automatically imply sounds? It is not clear from what I read thus far. What I would like to do is set up some sort of visual only alert which would display a “Rest Area” Icon on my map when I’m close to one. Is that feasible?

Thanks in advance,

If you just set an alert distance

using the manual mode of POI Loader and don't put a .wav or .mp3 sound for the file you will just get a ding-ding alert when you reach the distance you set.
I set a distance of 5555 feet.

Not obtrusive at all and makes you look up to see what the alert if for.

MrKenFL- "Money can't buy you happiness .. But it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery." NUVI 260, Nuvi 1490LMT & Nuvi 2595LMT all with 2014.4 maps !

Then, You will see an oval

If your unit is like mine, you will see an oval with the name of the POI that caused the alert to sound.

For the newbie

For our new Garmin owners or first-time POI Loader users using manual mode who want alerts, in addition to selecting manual mode when starting POI Loader in your computer, do all that follows as well:

-use POI Loader in Manual mode,

-when the Combined Rest Areas file comes up, check "This file contains proximity alerts points," then check "Alert whenever you get close to a point," and finally, set an alert distance (I use 15000 ft),

-and to be super complete, don't check "Ignore this file."

Once you're comfortable with the above, try adding an icon or sound to go with the POI file.

Thanks to MrKenFL for all the effort he's put into this Combined Rest Area POI file. This is almost certainly the best POI file for a newbie to try using with alerts since it's easy to do and will always give alerts when correctly loaded. Things get a bit more difficult when trying to use the Schools POI file with alerts for school crossing due to set-back of schools from roadways. When new folks hear of using the TourGuide feature, the schools POI file is a great one to "TourGuide" to be able to fairly consistently get an alert.

Thanks to MrKenFL

Thanks to MrKenFL for maintaining the Combined Rest Areas file. The POIs are located at the exit lanes so the alerts are always reliable.

Note that the 1490 series cannot use mp3s. You must use wav format and have a program called SOX.exe in the same folder as POILoader.

By the way

By the way, Hornbyp's Alerts FAQ explains the two different standard alert sounds, and much more.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

It's a great FAQ but it's drifted off of the Garmin FAQ list, and can be hard to find.

..Miss Poi, Jon .. is it possible to do a search page just for FAQ's, or add a 'tab' for them like you have after a search for 'Content', 'POI files', and 'Users'? Might be handy.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

I have linked this to the Garmin are of the FAQ. Those other features are only available to admin at this time. You can use the search feature at the top or use the full list of FAQ's here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6654

Miss POI

Thanks

Thank you, Maam. I guess I'm usually in a hurry & missed seeing the All-Alphabetical list! Never noticed that before.
