Garmin Nuvi Battery Recall

Just saw this article why browsing the web:

http://www.slashgear.com/garmin-nuvi-battery-recall-over-pot...

They are talking about a potential fire hazard with overheating batteries. It appears the 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) model numbers may be affected.

If you own one of the above models, you may want to check the Garmin site on whether yours is in the recall.

quality control

I agree with someone who mentioned quality control. It's ok to say it's not Garmin's fault, but ultimately, they have to take responsiblity, and it seems they have. But the end user really doesn't gain anything, there was a similar issue with Polycom phones a few years ago. The solution was to replace the battery which had something like a 4000+ mAh capacity, with one that had less than 1/2 the capacity. Obviously, when it comes to talk time, that's no solution at all. So once we heard that, we stopped replacing them and kept the originals. 2 1/2 yrs. later, not one of the units has burst into flames.

I did

Wouldn't ya think Garmin (having the e-mail and home addresses of registered users) would have notified owners of the affected units?

I did receive an email from Garmin on the 25th explaining the recall. I don't know if I received it because I DO have a recalled unit, but it was sent nonetheless.

Now if I could just get them to email me when map updates are out smile.

No Recall on my 260W

By the comments here, the recall must be a rather small group of recalls.

Garmin doesn't manufacture the batteries used in the Nuvi's so I don't see how you can blame them for the problem. As for bricking your unit, is it possible that something you did during the update caused it to become a brick?

My 750 is not part of the recall.

Sure you have to blame Garmin, after all they are the ones selling the final product and should have tested and vetted all sub suppliers. Toyota is being blamed for all sorts of problems for parts made by others that contribute to the final product. So too should Garmin IMHO.

Not blaming Garmin is kind of like saying the egg recall should be blamed on the chickens, and not the egg farmers/producers.

Your analogy is humorous indeed! smile

No Recall For Me

Seems that most of the units here are not on the recall list. Still if my 250W was recalled and if the shipping was paid for I would still feel bad that I would loose the use of my Garmin for the two weeks or so that I am sure the replacement would take. Perhaps they should update the maps for free at the same time.

Recall

For those who do not live in Iowa, the two egg producer farms involved with the egg recall are blaming the people for not knowing how to fix eggs after all these years of doing it as the problem and not the two farms. The government has shown that the feed used for the hens was contaminated. Trying to deflect the blame is a common company way.

Gramin Recall

No recall on my 780 - but thanks for the heads up.

UPS Status Update

My unit has traveled about 30 miles (net distance) since being picked up Tuesday. Somehow the package bounced back and forth between sites according to the tracking information. Arrival in El Paso is expected 9 September. Getting this back within the 10-14 day turn around time that Garmin estimated is looking pretty unlikely, but we'll see...

Recalled

According to the Garmin website and after entering my unit's serial number, my 765t has been recalled. But I've not received a letter from Garmin. Has anybofy received a letter uet? I guess I'll check MyGarmin to see if anything is there.

Thanks.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

My 770 is recalled so I sent

My 770 is recalled so I sent it back. Hope it doesn't take too long. So I may not get the same unit back??? That makes no sense, they are tracked by serial number. I would like mine to be able to charge, since it no longer does with the car charger. It only charges on direct current. I am reluctant to ask them to fix more than one problem at a time.

You may need a new charger, not a new GPR

tfbaker wrote:

Your charging problem may be in the car charger part, not the unit itself. Garmin recall instructions is to NOT send anything but the GPR itself so they couldn't look at that at all.

I'm safe!

Just checked my serial number and all is O.K.!

Thank YOU for the link!!

At Summer Camp...

According to UPS, it got there in 3 days from Napa, CA.

I hope it comes back all rested, recharged, and full of energy!

Garmin Nuvi Battery Recall

First, Thanks to all those who looked up their individual serial number, AND THEN POSTED that "THEIR" unit, and "THEIR" specific model was not subject to the recall. That's swell and real helpful.

You can not extrapolate that all units of that model either were, or were not involved in the recall. If the model is listed as affected, EACH serial number must be checked.

Batteries from different vendors are used in the same models, and while one unit may be affected, another may not.

I shipped mine back on Aug 28th, UPS tracking shows it arriving on Sept 1st. but Garmin's status page says "We're still waiting on the arrival of your unit" -Great - I see where this is going....

For Awhile, I Thought I Was The Only One

It's a small club, but welcome anyway. I don't know what anyone could do if they needed to search through this whole thread later for something important--at least beyond the first few posts. But we can all take comfort knowing precisely whose individual units did--or did not--need to make a trip to the repair depot.

I was thinking now might be a good time to get some popcorn ready so we can munch as we follow all the tracking details that are beginning to flow in (also very useful to others, BTW). Stayin' awake for the final results is gonna be tough, though it ought to be riveting to see which individual's batteries work better or worse once they've returned from the depot. This thread could live long enough to grow whiskers.

Maybe I'm just too subtle. Or maybe it's just a factor of the incentives built in to the site, and people clutter up threads this way instead of posting in the Keeping Your Windmill Alive thread because it's not as handy.

And anyone who considers this post as just more clutter, I wouldn't necessarily disagree. But at this point, the thread is a runaway train anyway.

New thread for status

While I like discussions of any sort, I agree that it was getting a bit hard to see how long these recalls were going to take. So I thought I'd jump right out there and summarize the posts here for those that have sent their units in to Garmin.

I just found out mine is on the list but I'm hanging on to it for a while wink

recalled nuvi's.

It is being reported over on the GPS Review forum that that the nuvi's are being returned with new serial numbers (reason unknown). One user has reported that he received a completely different nuvi that had someone else's favorites, but other users say they got their original nuvi with a new serial number. It will be interesting to see how this affects the nuMaps Lifetime subscription and any other subscriptions (Language guide, Cyclops, etc.)

Speaking from experience, when your Nuvi is returned you get a notification in your MyGarmin account that has you switch all of your subscriptions from the old serial number to the new. I have had to do this twice.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

My dad's 760 is on the recall list.

So we are sending it to Garmin. He had it for 2 years, never had any overheating issues that he noticed. I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. Still, I think it will take 3 weeks to a month to get it back. In the mean time he has no GPS.

hard reset, screen recalibration

CherylMASS wrote:

My 765t had a pretty bad problem with touch screen misinterpretations until the 4.0 firmware update. Now, it is perfect! Have you tried doing a screen calibration? If that doesnt work, maybe a hard reset would help. Maybe even reloading the firmware update again might help.

Garmin Nuvi Battery Recall

Does anyone know if the removal of the battery in order to replace it with a new one will cause one's favorites to be deleted?
I would kind of hate to loose them and have to look them up again.
Dropped my in the mail today for replacement. Hope the 10 to 14 days will be right. BTW it was a 260W
At least it is nice to get a new battery.

battery life

what is the battery life on 255W ? anyone had to replace it yet ?

8 days and Nothing So Far

UPS said my 260W was received at the El Paso loading dock on Thursday 9/2 at 10:06 a.m. I checked the RMA status again today Friday 9/10 at 7:30 p.m. and it still says "We are awaiting receipt of your return."

Is there any status message between this message and "Your product is awaiting shipping."?

Ours is back sent 8-28

decoydoc,

Routes and favorites were unaffected. We did get a new serial number however. Garmin has the new SN already updated on the site so it won't affect our Numaps.

BTW, yesterday the Garmin site showed our unit was awaiting shipping. We received it today.

I spoke with Garmin and they said that they will update the status of your Garmin on the website from Awaiting to receive your unit to waiting to ship, when it is ready to ship. That is all they will be updating so apparently it gets shipped when it says it's ready to ship.

Battery replacement - easier to do it yourself

My 750 battery never lasted as long as I thought it should. Nary a word from Garmin on any issues, so I decided to just replace it. Easy and inexpensive. See the following posts:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2562

My cost was $16 thru Ebay and it was easy and the battery life/strength is now better than with the new unit.

I've not checked if mine is in this recall as I did this months ago. Much less hassle than sending it out, waiting, then possibly getting back replacement unit and have the hassle of re-setting up everything.
