Any current Garmin models with automatic zoom *out*?

Hello All,

I've been a Garmin user from way back (the fact that I still have and use an iQue 3600 should confirm that). There's also a nuvi 755T in our household as well.

On the iQue, if you're being put on to a route where you won't have a "next turn" for a relatively long distance, it automatically zooms out so that you can see the nav line to your next turn. Sometimes hundreds of miles are condensed into a very small distance. This is a feature I loved.

When we got the 755T I was in for a very rude awakening when I found this feature gone, along with the ability to control the level of labeling detail on my maps and the fonts/sizes used for certain types of labels. Garmin tech support gave the standard (and true), "That's the way it's designed to work, not a bug," explanation.

There are now so many Garmin models that I can't possibly do the heavy digging to find whether any have reintroduced either the automatic zoom out (most important to me) and/or label detail level control.

If anyone is using a Garmin that they know is currently being sold that has one, the other, or both of these features, would you mind sharing the model number?

Thanks,
Brian

I love it too

I have a 60CSx and it does just that.

The 60 series is being replace with the 62 series. You can download the owners manual for the 62 to see if it does the auto zoom.

My 250 auto zooms on a route, not sure how far out and when I'm just driving it will change between 200 meters & 500 meters depending on speed.

i haven't seen one that zooms out hundreds of miles out till the next turn except for you manually zoom out and it stays zoomed out till you are getting closer to the turn at which point it will zoom in automatically.

go to a store and demo the latest garmin models, the ones that are $300-400 in store. they might have that feature.

260W

Mine does that to. It changes according to speed, but I'd like to be able to select the speed points for the feature.

I noticed today the amount of zoom out is dependant on the current route, and the number of exits/cross streets, and speed.

When the speed gets over 40 MPH and there are no exits/cross streets within the next mile or so, the scale on the bottom of the display goes to .8 Mi per unit, which is approx. an area on my unit (nuvi 265 wt)of approx. 4 mi. x 3 mi.

Thanks to all who've

Thanks to all who've replied.

I've had the 755T unit zoom out, too, but only once or twice and with such a lack of labeling on the map as to be almost useless.

My last correspondence with Garmin indicated that they had no current plans to allow configuration of either auto zoom out or detail level of labeling.

As much as I love certain aspects of the 755T, I really find that not having information about what is surrounding me makes it far less preferable to the ancient iQue (for which map updates have not been available since late 2009).

I keep hoping that enough users will contact Garmin over time asking for more information, not less, to be displayed on the maps. I miss being able to tell that I'm going to need to turn at the 5th street coming up because that street name is shown long before I actually get the voice guidance announcement.

Oh, well, one deals with what's out there. I'll be keeping an eye on after-Christmas sales and on Tom Tom models as well. It seems to me that only Garmin and Tom Tom are holding their own and continuing to supply consistent map updates and tech support. I've loved some of the features on other brands I've seen (Motorola, for instance) but when you go to the company website to get any sort of information regarding the map updates in particular they almost seem to be non-existent.

Thanks again for the input I've received here.

When your looking consider the Nuvi 37xx line. These models, with the latest firmware, allow you to turn "autozoom" off and on. In addition they offer much more detailed map screens with lots of street names shown. They are also dual oriented (can use in landscape of portrait modes) and particularly in portrait mode it is very easy to see your next turn is 5 blocks up the road.
