Garmin Nuvi Battery Recall

Just saw this article why browsing the web:

http://www.slashgear.com/garmin-nuvi-battery-recall-over-pot...

They are talking about a potential fire hazard with overheating batteries. It appears the 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) model numbers may be affected.

If you own one of the above models, you may want to check the Garmin site on whether yours is in the recall.

No recall

for my 765T either.

Recall

I wouldn't mind having mine recalled, damn thing gets way to hot for my liking when plugged into the car. Since i want traffic and my Battery doesn't last more than 20 minutes at the most, not much choice but to plug it in.

Thanks for the heads-up

Thanks for the heads-up. I checked my 265WT it's not affected.

Recall

Me too

Could be...

Just checked and mine is not recalled. My unit is several years old, so maybe they changed battery suppliers and had a problem with the newer ones?

Sucks!

That could be the case. Mine isn't recalled either. It is 2 years old.

My late model 765T (V11 CPU board) is not included. I was worried I was going to have to send it back.

Hmmmmmmmmm..........

My 760 had a horrible battery they didn't hold a charge worth beans. I replaced it myself and it's been great ever since. I don't think I'll even check if there's a replacement. I have no desire to send my entire nüvi to Garmin to mess with.

Removable Battery?

I am assuming that units with removable batteries are not affected, right?

The only units affected are "the 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number) model numbers may be affected"

The 8x0/8x5 series are the only nuvi units with removable batteries. Those units are NOT in the recall, only those listed above.

My 200W has not been

My 200W has not been recalled.

I noticed a lot of posters mentioning their 255W and 265W units not under recall. Unless I interpreted the press release wrong, those units aren't part of the recall to begin with. I haven't checked my roommate's unit, because it isn't a 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx, or 7xxT. It's a 2x5W unit.

Just checked, mine is ok but my wife's is going back.

Incidentally, this event marks the first time I've gotten an email from Garmin notifying me of anything & I've got lifetime maps. I usually get my info here!

My 2-year old 770 has been recalled.

Since mine is

just the 200 and not the 200W, I guess mine is ok. But I'm going to check just to be sure.

Recall

Though warm to the touch, my 765T was not on the list.

Monica, where are you? Garmin needs you.

Are they implying there's a relationship to this (in an attempt to assign some blame to the customer)?

I think they're implying it's more likely to have problems when/if the battery swells due to heat/age/whatever. The swelling may be mis-aligning/moving things to where they were not intended to be, hence the need for the "spacer".

Garmin should employ Monica Lewinsky as QA tester. She is expert in deflating swellings...

I'm happy about it

My 760's been recalled. I'll wait until my next trip is over the week after next and then contact them to send it in and get a free fresh battery, factory installed, at no charge. Rather than gnashing my teeth, I'm finding the bright side of the ordeal. I can live without the unit for a week or two. If you can adopt this viewpoint, you might be a lot happier too.

760 recalled

My 760 was recalled. Received an email and also saw a notice when logging onto the mygarmin site. Got an error when trying to submit the RMA request via FireFox. Switch to IE 8 and the submission went through fine.

From the links after the RMA submisison, it appears that the battery will be replaced and the original unit returned. We'll see - I've backed up the favorites anyway!

No recall on my 765T. Too

No recall on my 765T.

Too bad, it runs very hot & the battery life sux

battery life sux

I agree with both statements. It's said that the 765t's do not have removable battery's. What's this then?

Open 765t, pull old battery from socket, put new one into socket. close unit, recycle old Battery into the garbage. Charge new Battery. Done. Were happy.

Perhaps Mine is headed out of the country

Looks like my 760 is headed to Mexico to have the new battery installed.

My address label is having it sent to Escoto Brokers http://www.escotobrokers.com/ who apparently will handle getting it there and back.

When I clicked on the link you provided, I see an El Paso Texas address, & 915 area code matches El Paso Texas too.
Where did you get the impression it will be sent to Mexico? Perhaps you are seeing something different than I am, or you have an address label with an actually Mexican address? If it does in fact go to Mexico, I sure hope it doesn't get kidnapped and held for ransom by the drug cartels:) Good luck with all of that.

My assumption is based on two facts.

1. Escoto is a US Customs Broker
2. Didn't see on their site where they are an authorized Garmin Repair Facility smile

Don't know if it's actually going to Mexico and don't care. Just found the place I was sending it to a bit surprising.

I am so glad that Garmin is

I am so glad that Garmin is a proactive company, things like this add real value to there GPS line up.

I bought an Asus GPS unit about 4 years ago, wrote them a few times for support. Got zero help from them.

Bricking

>>The 7x5 series bricking fiasco last year was due to faulty/buggy firmware code, not any type of user error.

This unfun escapade into useless can be performed by anyone at any time with any unit.

I'm Not saying 7x5 fiasco didn't happen. I'm saying bricking by a user can and is done without the help of buggy firmware.

We are are our own worst enemies.

Wouldn't ya think Garmin (having the e-mail and home addresses of registered users) would have notified owners of the affected units?

Fortunately my 760, which is installed in the center storage console of my dash isn't on the list..whew!

Cheers wink
