nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released October 5, 2009

Available via WebUpdater or direct firmware update download (at individual unit links below). Note that all 7x0 series units use the same firmware update file regardless of the model number so it does not really matter which file you download. I've included all links regardless.

Changes made from version 4.80 to 4.90:

* Corrected low battery warning behavior.
* Corrected an issue that could cause the map to stop updating when approaching specific safety camera locations in the UK.

Archive doesn't work anymore?

Unfortunately, it looks like the archive doesn't seem to be functioning at the moment.

Does someone know of another location for the 4.80 firmware?

Thanks!

nuvi 7x0 v4.80 region file:

http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7xx_regionfileonly__480.g...

To install to your nuvi, drag the downloaded file onto your WebUpdater icon with the nuvi connected and detected by Windows and follow the prompts.

There is no model specific region file...all 7x0 units will update using this 7x0 region file regardless if the unit is a 750, 760 770 or 780.

Thanks CraigW

Seams like the hard reset may be working for me, second day now and no freeze ups / the diagnostic mode reset did not work for me it just made my 760 power off instead of the freeze that was hapening.

Perry site working (again)

Looks like the problem was fixed on 08-Jan, since that is the earliest modification date in the nuvi directory.

Garmin says....

I'll be happy to help you with this.
I am sorry to hear about this issue. Please perform a master reset on the unit. This should clear any corrupt data that may be causing this issue.
To do a Master Reset on a nuvi 700 / 705 series device please follow the steps below:
Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings. If you would like to backup your favorites you can find more information on how to do so here.
1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
5. You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
6. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
7. Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nüvi and when completed place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Downgraded to 4.80

My 770 started freezing up too bad on 4.90
No problems so far...
Knock on wood.

thanks for the info

thanks for the info

4.90.........

Had to replace my trusty nüvi 760. The one I had was lost/stolen. I purchased the same unit again as I use the audio player and the FM transmitter a LOT when driving for work. I listen to books on long drives. The replacement unit has the 4.90 firmware. I left my previous unit at 4.80 and it worked flawlessly so I'm wondering how this replacement unit is going to function.

I'm leaving in a couple of hours for a work trip and will have a 3.5 - 4 hour drive each way today and tomorrow. I really hope the thing doesn't lock on my as reported by others here. I think I'll get the 4.80 firmware and stick it on my laptop in case I need to revert to the previous version tonight in the hotel.

It

It will not be a problem. 4.90 fixed all of the problems that popped up in earlier versions. Since 4.90 has been available for 13 months it certainly must work as no further updates have been issued.

4.90......... My 760 Has Been OK with 4.90

I put 4.90 on it in February 2010. It has been working without error since then. I also frequently drive 4 or 5 hours each way for work.

4.90 Doesn't work for me

Every time I do a map update, it automatically upgrades to 4.90. On my nuvi 760 within a week or so, I start to have lockups again and have to downgrade to 4.8

I've done all the suggested fixes from this thread. Doesn't permanently solve the issue for me

Firmware

I loaded v4.9 on my 750 when it first came out. I had no problems until I made a trip and listened to an audio book. It locked up 3 times in about 1/2 hour. Rolled it back to 4.8 and it works fine. I've tried 3 times to update and had the same problem each time. So until Garmin fixes this problem, I'm sticking with v4.8.

v4.8 has my vote

Hasn't froze up again since downgrade..

No problems - so far............

Well, I drove 3.5 hours and listened to an audio book the entire way. Then I drove around the town a bit that evening and the next morning went into work there. After doing what I went there to do I drove another 3.5 hours home and listened to an audio book the entire way. I also had the red light, speed camera, and rest stop poi files loaded and received a number of alerts from them. The unit performed flawlessly.

I'll still hang onto the 4.8 firmware just in case.........

freezing nuvi 760 with FW4.90

I have my nuvi 760 lockup after update to 4.90. Garmin could nor solve my freezing issue & replaced my unit with another nuvi 760 & FW4.90 , and now the replaced GPS locks up as well. I was told to wait for FW 5.10 to be re-issued and that may solve my freezing

can FW4.90 be reset back to 4.80 ? or is this no longer possible ?

Yes, it is possible to rollback to an earlier version. There is a web site that has all, or almost all, of the software version for Garmin units. Do a search here and you should find a link to the site without too much trouble.

Are you kidding me! WAIT ???

"WAIT for FW update!" I would have been furious with that answer. I would contact GARMIN again and make them give you a link to v4.80 since v4.90 isn't working. Stand tough until they do.

Just a remionder to always backup your GARMIN drive completely before any updates and keep them archived for a while.

Just read another user's post from today. He was able to go back to v4.80 without GARMIN's help. He had the same problems with v4.90.

I have to go back to 4.80 after each map update

On my nuvi 760 is has never accepted the 4.90 update. By that I mean it freezes up after a period of use. Hard reset has had no impact on this.

@cagpsfan:
To avoid having to revert back to 4.80 each time, see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18810#comment-102105

DorkusNimrod's post explains how to make a temporary change to the GarminDevice.xml file on your nuvi to fool the map update process into thinking you have the most current firmware installed.

Hopefully before the next map update comes out, the 5.10 firmware will be available smile

4.80

4.80 is the best working firm ware - i no longer have lockups since going back to 4.80 [nuvi 760]

Both nuvi 760s lock up

Many nuvi 760s running firmware update v4.90 operate flawlessly, like mine does. The reason both nuvi 760s lock up could be the POIs, icons, or sound files that are loaded.

See this thread -

Remember that a 750 is the same as a 760.
