nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released October 5, 2009

Available via WebUpdater or direct firmware update download (at individual unit links below). Note that all 7x0 series units use the same firmware update file regardless of the model number so it does not really matter which file you download. I've included all links regardless.

Changes made from version 4.80 to 4.90:

* Corrected low battery warning behavior.
* Corrected an issue that could cause the map to stop updating when approaching specific safety camera locations in the UK.

Nuvi 760 updated to 4.90 a couple of weeks ago. Using SiRF chip with no problems.

Use the bluetooth function with a Motorola Razor frequently.

7 lockups

After 7 lockups on a total of 4 hours of driving today, I reinstalled 4.80 this evening. So very frustrating.

did you contact garmin tech support to complain about this problem? as posted earlier by me, they stated that my complaint was the first they had even heard of this problem. so everyone that is having a problem should make it a point to let them know, even if ithe problem only ocurred one time.

redjacket3.... Thanks for the info. I will be getting in touch with garmin tech later today and describe my problem to them. Don't expect much from them sad But as you say, maybe if they get enough complaints something may get fixed.

Update: A new clue. . .

My problems with locking up started several days after doing the update. In driving around this weekend, I have come to the preliminary conclusion that there is some problem with bluetooth. The ONLY times my unit has locked up is when I have established a bluetooth connection with my phone. This weekend, I have just been driving around without connecting the phone and it has not locked up at all.

Just to report back, my 760 (vintage June/2008) unit has had no issues with the 4.9 update.

I will try it with Bluetooth connectivity to my phone and report back tomorrow.

Edit: Still going strong with no issues to report.

770 locked up

My 770 locked up within the first two minutes after choosing a route. This was my first outing after upgrading the firmware to 4.90.

I disabled Bluetooth and never had another issue on the 4 day trip.

No freeze up

Just got home from Port Aransas. Had a great trip. No problems with update, no freeze up. Just great directions.

We let JillMap tell us the way to and from the coast. We like the back roads so I told her to go to a town we would be going through on the back roads then programed in our trip. She found a way we have not gone before. It was shorter and no traffic.

Coming home she took us a little different way but it was great also.

It is so nice not to have a paper map with my finger holding our position all the way on the little back roads to be sure we don't miss a turn. Don't know what we would do without our Nuvi 750.

Updated and...

Since I updated to 4.90 and 2010.30 maps I have had 2 lock ups. It never did this before.

Another weird thing I observed on my unit has to do with navigating. When I get to a point where I have to make a turn, there is a fairly long lag before the unit catches up. Sometimes I am almost at the next cross-street and the unit still shows me as being at the previous intersection. This delay is only when navigating to a point. If I am just driving around with no destination input, it seems to keep pace.

I will try reverting back to 4.80 to see if the problem goes away.

Low Battery indication

works much better now.

Finally updated today

Had a lockup under 4.8 yesterday - coincided with receiving a text message on the phone while it was linked to the 760 via BT. Will see how 4.9 performs on Sunday.

firmware archives?

There USED to be a rather complete archive of garmin firmware on the net....im gonna go with 4.7 or 4.8 for now...but...
the archive seems to ahve disapeared...

any pointers?

Firmware update

I updated from 4.80 to 4.90.
Intersecting road's names still at top of the screen in map mode, in route mode next turn listed.
No lockups so far.

I updated because if I went to diagnostic screen (press and hold battery icon)and then exited the nuvi would reboot and hang up, if I didn't turn it off and back on it would hang up for hours. Turn it off and it would boot up normally.
4.90 did not fix the diagnostic exit hangup.
Any thoughts or ideas on a fix besides staying out of dagnostic screen?

Rollback

My 750 has never had a problem except those caused by poorly written Firmware. I upgraded to 4.9 about a month ago expecting it to fix the multiple low battery warnings I would get when the battery was close to being discharged. It fixed the battery warning problem but it started to lockup. I noticed that every time I was listening to a MP3 file, the unit would lockup. The MP3 would continue to play but the map would stop updating. I have now rolled back to 4.8 and everything seems to work now with no lockups.

I tried the hard reset and, other than loosing all my user settings, it had no effect on the lockups. I guess I'll stay with 4.8.

I gave up on MP3s

I was excited when I first got my Nuvi 760 to have MP3 player capability. I went out and bought a 16Mb card to hold my music library (most of it, anyways). With the card in, boot up time is slower, and frankly the Nuvi is a lousy player, with slow and painful navigation, etc. Now I use the card in my camera and use a simple iPod Nano for music. The iPod has the additional advantage of being able to be controlled by my (replacement) car's audio controls. So while it was a good idea at the time, the Nuvi MP3 player capability has been 'overcome by events', IMO. I'll stick to the Garmin for navigation only.

nuvi MP3 players had their heyday

Aero_Jonno wrote:

Agreed...and apparently, so does Garmin since none of their recent units (1xxx series) have an MP3 player at all. This does not bother me in the least bit since I have never used it on any of my nuvis...I feel Garmin should concentrate on the navigation aspects of the units instead of MP3 players and the like.

However, the lack of an MP3 player can really be a problem for those who used the headphone jack (which Garmin also did away with along with the MP3 player) to connect the audio-out of the nuvi to the car stereo for increased volume. They have also dropped the FM transmitter as well (which never really worked as intended in most cases).

So, now there is no way at all to use the audio-out from the nuvi to your car stereo if the speakers in the nuvi are inadequate for the vehicle used, like if you drive a noisy vehicle.

No MP3 player?

Well, that sucks! I use the MP3 player in my 750 to listen to audio books on long drives. Looks like I'll have to go back to my Palm.

The FM transmitter is no loss, it never work worth a damn anyway. But the headphone jack is. I need it in my cars when the windows are down. I plug a cassette adapter in and play it through the car stereo.

Looks like I won't be buying another Garmin when this one quits.

Personally, I think a

Personally, I think a navigation system should be just that. FM transmitters don't work well with much of anything (not just a GPS). While, yes, it is nice to have hands free Bluetooth, I still use my bluetooth headset. The only thing I wish Garmin had kept, as you mentioned, is the headphone out. That is a nice feature as I use it every now and then. However, if it didn't have it, I wouldn't miss it.

My 760 does a great job of getting me where I need to go. I have had it for 2 yrs now, and I guess I am fortunate to not have had major problems.

All GPS products have problems here and there, just look at their boards. I prefer Garmin, and intend to stay with them. However, that's not bashing TT or others. I have friends who have either a TT or a Magellan. They have problems with theirs, too, from time to time.

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90

I'm gonna try this update on my 760 and see how it works. Does anybody know if there's really any noticeable improvements with this update?

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90

I updated my 760 to 4.9 from 4.2 this weekend. All is fine after 30 minutes of routes/driving.

Updated to 4.9 and map

Updated to 4.9 and map version 3. Did a little running around last weekend with no lockups or major problems. Although, my tourguide file for rest areas quit working. I'll reload my POI files and see what happens then.

Still locking up here

I went back to 4.6. Stuttering came back but everything else seemed normal.

I re-installed the latest maps and 4.9 and tried it yesterday on a 350km trip. Stuttering and lag are almost gone, very acceptable, but freezes are back. One time in particular, it froze just as I was about to enter the Ville-Marie Tunnel in Montreal. It is a good thing I knew the area because it was not great getting it back. Also lost the voices and had to reset the unit.

Guess I am going to fall back to a prior version for now. I much prefer stuttering to freezes.

Lack of headphone jack on new models is big

I have a nuvi 760 and connect it to my car audio via the headphone jack. I find that it is a great combo for me to listen to music and get directions through the nuvi via the car speakers. Lack of this feature would definitely give me pause in terms of buying a new unit.

I also listen to audio books a LOT while driving for work. I would really hate to lose that functionality. If I ever need to get another unit - if my trusty 760 dies or something - that's something I'll have to make sure to check out.

I don't remember reports of stuttering in 4.80 which I'm still running (happily). I agree, freezes are not acceptable as they may happen at the most inopportune time, so 4.90 is out of the picture for now.

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90

I installed this update on my 760 and then I went on several drives with it. About 20 to 30 minutes into every drive, my 760 would freeze up. I had to reset it in order to get going again. I went into the diagnostic mode and made it do a test on the "version information". Apparently it cleared something in memory and my 760 did not freeze again ever since. Been taking hour long drives with it for almost a week now and no freezing.

Does Garmin Know?

I had the same thing happen to me as part of the last map upgrade which automatically installed 4.90. I re-installed ver 4.80 and all is back to normal - no freeze up's.

Does Garmin know about this problem and are they busy doing something about it? Seems to me Garmin is a little short when it comes to testing their version changes. Someone in the testing department is due for a new job posting out side the company.

Getting nuvi into diagnostic mode

Esteban4u, how did you get the 760 into that diagnostic mode?

--
Nuvi 3597 LMT

Diagnostics mode

Press and hold the battery icon (or it's position on the screen if under external power) for ~10 seconds.

Note that after exiting Diagnostics, the nuvi will need to reacquire satellite data since this is purged when entering this mode.

Freezes

cagpsfan wrote:

I would be interested to know if this procedure fixed the problem with 4.9 freezes. If you try this please post your results. I updated my 750 to 4.9 but have since rolled back to 4.8 because of the freezes.

So reset is not enough

Esteban4u wrote:

Some people had reported a reset was fixing the 4.90 update freeze problem, but this post tells us otherwise. If the additional step through the diagnostic mode makes a difference, it is definitively something to cheer about. Can other people confirm:
1. They still had freezes after a reset?
2. This stopped after the procedure described by Esteban4u?

The more input the better.

Worked for me without diagnosic mode

I did the hard reset way back at the beginning of this thread. I found a few Data Aborts on my diagnostic screen corresponding to the freezes prior to the reset.

After the firmware update, I had several freezes, but after the
post-firmware-update hard reset, my 750 has not frozen or otherwise messed up even once with extensive use.

So for me, the hard reset cured my freezeups without needing to go into Esteban4u's Diagnostic Mode and "version test" procedure.

Garmin take note

The point is, no one should have to do a hard reset after a firmware update. The fault clearly is with Garmin on this.

Cheers and have a Merry Christmas

4.90 update results

Still no freezeups on road trips.
I bluetoothed to my phone, played mp3's thru the truck stereo using fm transmitter and ran a route for a 240 mile trip.
I ran in map mode with no planned route using bluetooth and fm transmitter and no freeze ups. Still showing cross streets in top bar.

But, if I go into the diagnostic screen and exit the Nuvi tries to reboot but won't start up. I have to turn it off and back on.
Any ideas on this?

PS--this thread discusses firmware for the nuvi 7x0 series and I think your nuvi is a 7x5 (you have a 755T, right?) Version 3.80 may be the most current firmware for your series of Garmin GPS.

Version 3.90 for 7x5 series was released on Dec. 21. It is what will install with Webupdater.

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released

Hmm ya i guess i goofed..in that i forgot to mention that i dumped my 755t and got a 765t. Changed that in my Profile now. Believe it or not, but my touch screen problems seem to be gone. So having said that, i'm kind of leery on upgrading to v4.90. It never solved my problem with the 755t and from what i read its not helping the the 765t owners either. V4.80 i cannot find a link that works. Leave well enough alone, don't fix what works?

confusion

As my above post mentioned:

v4.90 for the 7x0 series
v3.90 for the 7x5 series

You seem to be confusing the firmware version numbers for the 7x0 series with the 7x5 series.

If you now have a 765, v3.90 is the newest. If you want v3.80, it's never been publicly available since it was an internal Garmin firmware release which are never publicly released. v3.60 is however available here:

http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi7x5_regionfileonly__360.g...

To install it, drag the downloaded file onto your WebUpdater icon and follow the prompts. You don't mention which version you're currently on either but this will either update or backdate your unit to v3.60

For you and ozzy, go for the hard reset. It worked for me and eliminated my post-last-firmware upgrade freeze up issue. Remember to follow the instructions for backing up and restoring Favorites if you want to keep all of them post-reset.

Hard Reset on a nuvi 750

Just did a hard reset on my 750 after several lockups on a recent trip after upgrading to 4.90. So far it is working fine and seems to start up faster.

Garmin's interest in all this...

What a clear message that Garmin could care less about their customers.

This thread goes back to October 5 reporting problems ONCE AGAIN with Garmin firmware. Clearly this update is defective and risky to install.

Why hasn't Garmin fixed it in 3 months???
