nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released

nuvi 7x0 firmware update v4.90 released October 5, 2009

Available via WebUpdater or direct firmware update download (at individual unit links below). Note that all 7x0 series units use the same firmware update file regardless of the model number so it does not really matter which file you download. I've included all links regardless.

Changes made from version 4.80 to 4.90:

* Corrected low battery warning behavior.
* Corrected an issue that could cause the map to stop updating when approaching specific safety camera locations in the UK.

My 750 experience

My experience with my nuvi 750 was just like yours even though I've never experienced lock ups with other map or firmware updates.

As suggested to me in this thread (just back up to find the instructions), a hard reset of my nuvi cured my lockups while keeping the latest firmware.

Report back with your results. Good luck.

NUVI 7x0 update

Moved to 4.9 right after it was released and no issues at this point

Not Sure

visiter555, I'm not sure what your issue is. The 760 and the 780 are the same unit so why would they need different firmware releases?

The only difference between the 760 and 780 is the traffic receiver that's in the box. They are so much the same that you can use the 780's MSN receiver on the 760 and although I've never done it, the 760's FM receiver on the 780.

I've had 4.90 installed for a bit and no problems to date, but I have yet to do a long trip. I'll report back if it starts to choke.

good information

thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up - I will update my 760 to see if it was the firmware or if indeed I do have a weak battery.

What Vintage of Unit

What vintage is your unit? I bought my 760 in June of 2008. It appears that the units from this time frame did not experience a majority of the issues that have been reported with the updates.

I installed 4.9 and will report back if I experience a lock up or any other performance issues - good or bad.

JRoz -- DriveSmart 55 & Traffic

I bought mine in August 2008

and I as I noted in a recent post, these problems didn't show up right away. Also, they tend to "cluster". This afternoon I did about an hour drive. 5 minutes into the drive it locked up. Restarted. Locked up within a few minutes. Restarted again and no problems for the rest of the trip. I was driving to a inputed destination.

Hmm - I will keep tabs on this, as ours are pretty close to the same age - Tks

so whats the verdict? Install? or not?

so whats the verdict?
Install it or not on my 760?

Thanks for the heads-up!

I will update mine tonight.

My view

My view on that update... If it ain't broke, don't break it.
My 760, since replaced by Garmin a couple months ago works great, everything, even bluetooth with my B.B.
So that's how I would like to keep it.

Low Battery Warning

Zecpull wrote:

I have been getting the Low battery warning all the time with my 760..and I know it is not dead..will let you know if this works..

I used to get the low battery warning after maybe 20 - 30 minutes of use off of the cradle. The unit would actually shut down shortly after the warning started to pop up. I ended up putting in a new battery and the problem went away. I have a nüvi 760 and horrible dexterity. Swapping the battery was really easy. If the update doesn't fix your issue I'd suggest you just replace the battery.

Nuvi 750 Screen freezes

I installed the firmware update a week ago, and all seemed to be until a couple of days ago. The screen has frozen on my 750 a few times in the last couple of days. It froze twice on the 300 mile trip I took this weekend. I am not sure of when it happened the first time. The second time it occured, I was zooming the map screen out to get a better idea of where the reststop I was in was located in the state. (just passing some time waiting on the 6 year old who was in charge of rest stops to return) grin
I plan on doing a hard reset on the 750 before making the return trip Sunday. Hopefully, this will solve my problem. Will post a follow-up.

Updated several days ago

and I have experienced no problems. I use Webupdater and IIRC, there was a new version of the Webupdater that had to be downloaded before I did the 4.90 update.

Also updated the latest maps. Took half the night on my notebook with Verizon air card access.

If no one takes a chance, then those that decide to wait won't know if there is a problem or not. I chose to be a guinea pig, so blame it on me. mrgreen

Firmware 4.90

So far no problems after a week of use..(Nuvi 760)

Taking it to vegas next week for a roadtrip if anything freezes up will post back...

UPDATE: Made it to Vegas and back NO Problems...
been using it daily ... NO Problems!

A new clue regarding my problems with 4,90 on nuvi 760

My problems with locking up started several days after doing the update. In driving around this weekend, I have come to the preliminary conclusion that there is some problem with bluetooth. The ONLY times my unit has locked up is when I have established a bluetooth connection with my phone. This weekend, I have just been driving around without connecting the phone and it has not locked up at all.

Others of us with the 7xx series but without Bluetooth have seen lock ups, too, so it's more than that. The good news, so far, is that a hard reset seems to cure the issue. Did you try one?

4.90 Update

cool
There is a MAJOR PROBLEM with this update... My 780 LOCKED up over 20 times after this update and never before. I rolled back to 4.80 and my 780 is running SMOOTH with no problems. I here the 760 is having the same problems... ROLL BACK TO 4.80

Just to report back, my 760 (vintage June/2008) unit has had no issues with the 4.9 update.

I will try it with Bluetooth connectivity to my phone and report back tomorrow.

4.90

installed 4.90 f/w on my nuvi 750 with in the last couple of days, first day worked flawless, second day it started locking up so, done the hard reset on my unit not to long after the reset it froze again.so we reverted back to 4.80 f/w. would have thought garmin had fixed problems before a new release by now, since all the problems that everyone had with earlier firmware updates. will contact garmin support about the problem.

Update on my problems with 4.90 on nuvi 760

Quick recap. Installed 4.90. Worked for about a week before unit starting locking up multiple times. Never locked up with any previous version. At the suggestion of several people on this thread, performed a hard reset. So far, no more lockups during 2 days of use.

For those who have been having low battery warnings, a friend who had that same problem had it completely solved by upgrading to 4.90

Same for me and I've had many more than two day's success after the hard reset. Good luck to both of us. I'm confident all is well even though at least one person reports continued freezes after a hard reset. To that person, I suggest trying again.

Thanks for the feedback

think we will pass on this suggestion for a while, seen what happened with the 3.0 f/w update a while back.garmin has a bug with this release and is not willing to admit it,they say they have not heard any complaints about the freezing up issue. we sent tech support a e-mail here is the reponse. my suggestion to anyone if you have encountered a problem with this release is let them know so they can't deny the issue. and by the way there is no issue with my unit, until installation of this firmware release.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Since you have already
completed a master reset on the device please reinstall the software
with WebUpdater. If that does not correct the freezing issues then it
appears that the device my need to come in for repair/exchange. In
regards to the freezing issue I have not heard of this occurring on the
nuvi 700 series.

Did the update, will test

Did the update on a 760, no boot problems or lost POIs, etc noted. About to do a 7 hr drive and will give it much use over the next four days. We'll see how it holds up.

no problem after FW update, except...

the bluetooth pairing with my LG LX370 frequently lose connection. This did not happen before the update.

Drove to Iowa and back (~1300 miles), and experienced no problem with the GPS.

4.x Fiasco

The fiasco started with 4.0. I run 3.0 on my 750 and me thinks that's where she will be staying. A little more effort to keep her at 3.0 with map updates but not a big deal. Oh well, maybe Garmin will have better luck with 5.x!

you're right i think maybe the freezing up was with 4.0 firmware, and with this one also came not being able to roll back to an earlier version.i remember it was a major headache for a while.at least now you can roll back. wink

firmware v 4.90

Can't really see any differences after update. No problems so far. But as it was said earlier it is a must to charge battery before updating, as it takes place during power up after downloading and they say that if it gets interrupted it will kill gps wink

.

How many who have updated to v4.90 (and had lockups afterwards) are still having lockups, even after a hard reset?

No Problems

I have a 750 that so far is working great for almost a year. Just got back from Hawaii for two weeks and absolutely no problems. I am not going to update to 4.9 until I experience some problems with the unit. Been burned updating a couple times before so I am taking the stand "if it ain't broke don't mess with it".

Firmware update and screen freezes on 750

An update to my experiences using my Nuvi 750 after updateing the firmware. When I last posted here, I had just experienced a couple of screen freezes on my trip from Detroit to Traverse City, MI. So, on Saturday night, I did a hard reset on the 750 before beginning by trip back. On the trip back, everything went very smoothly. No freezes.
However, I had to make an emergency trip from Detroit to Greensboro, NC Wednesday night. Again, things were fine on the trip down. On the way back home, I experienced three freezes. The first happened while waiting for my wife to return to the car in a rest area on the Ohio Turnpike. I didnt notice until I was a couple of miles down the road that the Nuvi was still showing me in the rest area. It happened twice more during the last two hours of the trip.
Will be going back to the old firmware version soon as I get some rest.

Bluetooth problems on 760 because it is a separate update?

There is a separate update for Bluetooth functionality.

See this link:
nuvi Bluetooth Firmware software version 3.40

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1527

Is it possible that people are having trouble with Bluetooth because this is out of date for them?

Or does the main firmware file include this?

freeze up's

suggest you contact garmin tech with the problem as i have also done.they stated to me in their reply they have never heard of this problem,so if they receive more complaints maybe they will release a fix.

I updated

I updated Oct. 10 and to date I have had no problems. My 750 now locks on the satallite a lot faster. My battery no longer goes to 1/2 after an hour. My screen has never frozen. The update was good for me. Don't know why some have problems and some don't. I have never used the traffic. Don't know if that makes a difference.
Hopefully all will keep being ok.

No problems

Don't have the battery problem on my 750 and don't live in the U.K. so at this time I have no reason to update. Seeing some of the problems that are being experienced makes me feel even more certain I don't want to update at this time. Glad to hear some are not having problems after updating.

I swear Garmin programmers are some of the worst in the electronic industry. They cannot get one thing right the first time. Exactly the reason I am holding off....some people have been fortunate, updated and had no problems. I just don't want to take the chance since it is working fine.

The sad thing is, this not only applies to older units which should by now be stable with all the updates, but to brand new units as well. Just look at all the issues that the 1xxx series is having. Seems like there's never an end to it... rolleyes
