it official (not that they were going to shoot the bill down) but legislators voted unanimously to install almost 138 new red light cameras in what they call "dangerous intersections" they will put up 50 cameras this year and finish all of them by late 2010. no list published of the intersections yet. keep your eyes open for a poi file update when the list comes out.
Other pages
But why HERE?
At other locations where a bridge or driveway is in the way of the usual installation, I have seen cameras that face approaching traffic, and they were installed at the same time as other red light camera equipment at the intersection. This is at LIE north service road and Old Nichols Road at exit 58, and LIE north service road and Motor Parkway at exit 57. NY State requires a front license plate.
:
Except that there is no bridge or driveway obstructing the view here--it's along the service road (which parallels the overpass). The camera has a view of the westbound traffic; you can see the open area here:
http://tinyurl.com/3oajhy8
Rotate to the left, and the camera in question is right past where the minivan is, and facing to the right.
And though NY requires a front plate, that doesn't apply to cars registered out of state, which would presumably get a free pass in this instance.
Why here?
There is nothing we can see that is in the way of a usual installation. Perhaps they could not dig a trench because of winter conditions and that might be done in the future. This is a state road and they may have rules about maintaining the pavement in top condition - no cold asphalt in the winter. We have to assume that the camera in question looking at the front of oncoming traffic is a red light camera.
By mentioning the other locations on the LIE service road, I meant to demonstrate that it is possible that some red light cameras may be looking at the front of the car. This is also a state road. All the cameras I have seen looking at the front of the car were on state roads.
Take the basic intersection with four cameras looking at the back of vehicles. If I go through a red light with a large truck behind me to the right, the camera behind me can't see my rear plate. All they have to do is go to the video from the camera in the opposite direction and see the front of my car.
In reporting the direction to Miss POI, if it is possibly a RLC, then it should be included in the file. Remember also that the file is non-directional at this time - it is location only.

All Fifty Are Installed
According to an article in today's Newsday, all fifty Suffolk County RLC's are installed though no locations are given. The article is in error when it says "100" as only 50 were authorize, like Nassau County. The article is available at http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/suffolk-red-light... but is restricted to subscribers. Here is the text:
A Suffolk County camera system designed to nab red-light runners is finally at full strength after bad weather and contracting delays had the system operating at fewer than the planned 100 intersections since last summer.
The camera system, which is set up to take eight seconds of footage whenever a motorist runs a red light, was supposed to be at full speed with the devices spread across Suffolk County by July.
Initially, the county had planned to begin installing the cameras in January or February 2010, but a combination of bad weather and a time-consuming bid process delayed the project, officials said.
Since last June, the county has gradually installed the cameras and issued 98,000 citations, according to Suffolk officials.
This week the county released a YouTube video of some of the footage captured by the cameras, including images of school buses and a garbage truck running red lights. The video showed one accident in which one car T-boned another.
Motorists caught by a camera after running a red light face a $50 citation with no points assigned, according to Suffolk officials.
While 7,550 vehicles in Suffolk County have had two violations since the cameras were installed, only 1,135 vehicles have gotten three citations. And fewer still -- 303 vehicles -- have been cited a fourth time.
The New York State Senate transportation committee is scheduled to vote this week on a measure to allow Suffolk and other counties to add cameras at 50 more intersections.
Mark Smith, a spokesman for County Executive Steve Levy, said that depending on the effectiveness of the cameras, the county may add more next year.

Being Fixed
I e-mailed the reporter about the numbers in that article. She said they had re-written the lead last night, and she didn't catch the error. It should be corrected today.
That brings up the other question - looking at the latest RLC file here, it only lists 40 locations for Suffolk...

I compared the 40 RLC file locations with the 45 locations I know of (but have not seen myself so I cannot confirm them). The ones I see missing in the RLC file are below:
NY-27 North Service Road & Lakeland Ave, Bohemia (see up a few messages)
Pine Road & NY-112, Coram
NY-454 & Broadway Ave (CR-18), Holbrook
Horseblock Road (CR-16) & NY-112, Medford
NY-27 South Service Road & Medford Ave, Patchogue
That still leaves five to found.

Another Confirmed
I confirmed the location of another RLC that I had mentioned a few weeks ago.
In Farmingdale, at the intersection of Broadhollow Road (Rt. 110) and Conklin Street (Rt. 24) - that's the corner by the movie theater at Republic Airport. I saw the "Photo Enforced" sign a few weeks ago, but no cameras in place. Today I saw the camera. The RLC is only in place for southbound traffic on Broadhollow Road, and there is a warning sign in place as you approach it. I checked the other three corners, and there are no RLCs installed.
I reported this to Miss POI this evening.

Warning Signs?
I checked the other three corners, and there are no RLCs installed.
Are there warning signs on the other corners? The intersections I drive through have two cameras covering all four directions but maybe they are able to get by with only one camera at this location covering the entire intersection.
Otherwise, if it is southbound only, I'll bet it is to catch right on red violations from southbound NY-110 to Conklin. That turn gets a lot of use and I am sure with the "three second rule" they will make a lot of money on right turn violations.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
three second rule
What is the "Three Second Rule?" I don't believe it is a matter of law. If it is, what law is it and why hasn't it been publicized?
dobs108
Three Second Rule
See http://www.newsday.com/opinion/nassau-bungling-red-light-iss.... Specifically:
The Assembly left for vacation yesterday without passing any red-light camera bills, and Nassau's antics may have jeopardized similar expansions requested by Suffolk County and New York City. Though there needs to be more information on the duration of yellow caution lights and the need for a three-second full stop before a right turn on red is permitted, the evidence is mounting that these cameras reduce accidents, especially serious side-impact collisions.
If you do a Google search on the term "right turn red three seconds" you will see that it is the law just about everywhere. Apparently it is one of those rules that has never really been publicized BUT the RLC's know! I take it the government would prefer it that way. Personally, I would rather they outlaw right-turn-on-red at all RLC monitored intersections and stop the problem except for those who cannot read or follow the rules.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
Southbound Only
Are there warning signs on the other corners?
No, the sign is only up for the southbound side of Rt. 110.

Newsday three second rule
It seems Newsday bungled in mentioning the "Three Second Rule" with regard to stopping before a right-on-red.
According to the NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law and the NY State Drivers' Manual, a driver must make a full stop before the stop line before proceeding cautiously in making a right-on-red. "Full stop" is not further defined. "Three Second Rule" is never mentioned.
This issue is not mentioned on the Nassau or Suffolk County Red Light Camera websites, so I called customer service for Nassau at 866-790-4111, and Suffolk at 866-637-0008, which apparently goes to their respective RLC contractors, who adjudicate the summonses. The reps both told me the same thing quoted above in the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and when I asked their definition of a "full stop" the reps said they use the rule "when all four tires stop rolling." Both reps said three seconds is not mentioned.
dobs108
Does that mean...
...they use the rule "when all four tires stop rolling."
...you can skid through the turn with all four wheels locked up?

The Moose Is Loose! nuvi 760
sorry, but it's 2 requirements

...the vehicle's motion in respect to the pavement is irrelevant. Just that all four tires stop rolling. How silly!

East Farrmingdale
After reading the post about the new intersection up by the airport, I took a look again at the other NY-110 RLC south of that location this morning. Sure enough, there is only one camera and it is pointed north. No warning sign on Main Street but there is one on 110 northbound by BP. I rarely travel south in that area so I do not know if there is a warning sign for the southbounders near Burger King.
On a side note, there is no right turn on red permitted at the intersection and they have now put a lighted "No Right Turn on Red" that has a bright red dot on the overhead wire. Never seen one of those before. There used to be a lighted no right on red sign at NY-107 and NY-25A in Brookville but it wasn't like this new design.

The Law
NYS VTL requires a full stop before entering the intersection before a right on red can be made legally. There is no time minimum or maximum. The key is that the vehicle came to zero velocity before proceeding into the intersection under a red signal.
BTW, the VTL allows a left on red, but only from a one-way street to another one-way street.

I Have Fifty
By my count, I have all fifty Suffolk County RLC's located (see http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=2040...). However, Veterans Memorial Highway (NY-454) and Broadway Avenue (CR-18) has not yet been confirmed. Anyone out that way who can verify if there is a camera there? That would complete the information for Long Island as Nassau County's fifty have all been located already.

Anyone familiar with www.longislandredlightcameras.com? They list 5 new Suffolk County cameras as of June 5.
Manorville: Wading River Road and South Street
Mastic Beach: Mastic Road and Wavecrest Drive
Mastic Beach: Neighborhood Road and Commack Road
Copiague: Sunrise Highway and N. Monroe Avenue

I found those about two month ago and reported them. They were not yet active but looked only days away from being active.
This latest confirmation completes Suffolk's authorized fifty cameras. With only five days left in the legislative calendar, it appears that what we have is what we have. Unless the county's decide to move some intersections around, we will probably not be seeing any new installations for a while.

No Additional RLC's
According to Newsday, due to objections in the Assembly, it appears that Nassau and Suffolk will not each be getting the additional fifty cameras the requested in this legislative session. NYC is out of luck as well trying to go from 150 to 200. Good news for us as it means not having to scurry around trying to find all the new lights.
As for the missing RLC's, I had a PM with Moose135 and he identified three that appeared to be missing from the RLC file:
Deer Park Avenue (NY-231) and Straight Path (CR-2)
Veterans Memorial Highway (NY-454) and Broadway Avenue (CR-18)
Sunrise Highway (NY-27) South Service Road and Medford Avenue (NY-112)
Once Miss POI adds these, Suffolk's fifty cameras will all be documented. Nassau has been complete for a while.

I went through the intersection of 25A and Rocky Point Landing Rd yesterday both eastbound and westbound and didnt see any cameras. Is this intersection being confused with 25A and Rocky Point Yaphank Rd? On another website they only have one camera in Rocky Point as of June 2 at the intersection of 25A and Hallock Landing (NB) and Rocky Point Rd (SB).

The camera at Old Town Rd and Hawkins Rd in Coram is no longer there. The pole the camera was mounted on is still there but the camera is gone.
