Suffolk COunty Long Island NY anounces new red light cameras!!!!

it official (not that they were going to shoot the bill down) but legislators voted unanimously to install almost 138 new red light cameras in what they call "dangerous intersections" they will put up 50 cameras this year and finish all of them by late 2010. no list published of the intersections yet. keep your eyes open for a poi file update when the list comes out.

The reason is that cameras could not be installed on the bridge across the Expressway to look at the back of the car. People from states with no front plate get a free pass!

Sounds like an accident and lawsuit waiting to happen: "I was blinded by the red light camera's flash."

At least they can ID the driver....

So after the lawsuit they know it's the same guy!

It is an interesting map but Suffolk is way incomplete and Glen Cove Road/Northern Blvd is in Nassau not Suffolk. There is a Suffolk map, compiled by the Suffolk County Campaign for Liberty, at

Newsday's Locations

I haven't checked today's Newsday locations for red light cameras, but in the past they have been grossly wrong. Many of the locations given don't really have cameras, while they are leaving out locations where there really are cameras.

The Newsday inaccurate information keys in to both Nassau and Suffolk County policy on keeping the locations secret so that the public thinks they are everywhere. The only official notification is a small road sign at every camera.

I think we are doing very well on file accuracy because we have so many POI Factory contributors on Long Island.

My Nassau County Map

This is a Red Light Camera map for Nassau County:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=2040...

I put this one together over a year ago back when Nassau posted the locations on their web site. I have kept it updated from the user reports but it doesn't see much activity.

There are quite a few on Google but they are all based on the initial proposed intersections not the actual intersections.

They Help

camerabob wrote:

Being able to post locations now allows us to better collaborate on identifying intersections. I was told about two new ones in Nassau County but I was not able to check them out. Posting that information allowed other people to go and verify them.

If Miss POI does not want this information searchable via search engines like Google, she can create a robots.txt file for the site and exclude the forums from crawlers. That will prevent people from finding this site when searching for red light cameras as specific intersections. Of course that will cut down on new traffic to the site due to people looking for RLC info.

New One In Huntington?

Saw a posting over at LongIslandGasPrices.com about a new camera at Jericho Turnpike (RT-25) and Larkfield Road (40.84094067360001N 73.31346273422241W). Can anyone confirm it? I do not get over there more than once a year and I was already there in January grin

I saw cameras at 110/Jericho for w/b Jericho and n/b 110. Didn't see any others, but didn't get a good look. I did see the flash go off for w/b Jericho, so it is probably operational.

The two RLC's I saw were: on a pole curbside between Blockbuster and 800-Flowers; and on a pole at the s/e corner by the furniture store (Ethan Allan?).

Those are the 2 there.

New One In Bohemia?

Can anyone in the Bohemia area confirm if there is a new one at Lakeland Avenue and Sunrise Highway? I was on a Long Island discussion group (no rant) and someone mentioned they just installed one there. Not sure if it is the north service road, south service road or both. I would not report it Miss POI until it is confirmed.

Fifty

frainc wrote:

At this time, Suffolk is entitled to install fifty and they have not yet reached that number (they have about thirty-seven or so last time I counted). Nassau made it to fifty and is looking for authorization to install fifty more but that authorization is still pending.

I am curious if the authorized count is per light or per intersection. You have some intersections where north and south service roads for a given intersection are monitored. Nassau does not have any installations like that. So if it is per light, they have about thirteen more to go. If it per intersection, the number is a bit higher.

Under Construction?

I was heading south on Rt. 110 in Farmingdale today. As I approached the intersection of Conklin Street (Rt 24) I saw a "Photo Enforced" sign posted. When I went through the intersection, I didn't see any indication that lights are in place, or even under construction. The other three directions did not look to have warning signs installed. I don't know if the sign was installed by mistake, or if there will be an RLC at that intersection, and the sign went up early - it wasn't there on Monday. It's right at Republic Airport, and I'm at the airport several times a week, so I'll keep an eye on the location.

Heads Up! Possibly Four More in Suffolk

The Suffolk County Campaign for Liberty (www.SuffolkCFL.com) is reporting four additional intersections that are not listed in the POI file. I cannot verify them as I do not go to those areas so here they are for anyone who can confirm:

Nicolls Road (CR 97) & NY-25 (Middle Country Road), Centereach
NY-454 (Veterans Memorial Highway) and Broadway Avenue (CR18), Holbrook
NY-27 (Sunrise Highway) and Straight Path (CR 2), Lindenhurst
NY-112 (Medford Avenue) and Horseblock Road (CR 16), Medford

Plus there is still to be confirmed:

NY-27 (Sunrise Highway) and Lakeland Avenue, Bohemia

I have not sent these to Miss POI as they are unconfirmed. So if you can confirm, please send her the notification and coordinates.

Jackpot!

This morning I took a detour to my office to check out Sunrise Highway and Straight Path. Confirmed, there is a new RLC there. The equipment is in place and there are diamond shaped traffic light warning signs at the intersection but the "Photo Enforced" signs below are covered up.

Driving further down Sunrise to my exit to NY-109 I found two more: Sunrise and North Delaware Avenue and Sunrise and North Monroe Avenue/North Lewis Avenue (by Babylon Town Hall). All have equipment in place but the "Photo Enforced" signs are covered. The installations look relatively new so activation may be only a few days away.

I am reporting these three to Miss POI.

Still need help confirming as I do not get out that far into Suffolk:

Nicolls Road (CR-97) & NY-25 (Middle Country Road), Centereach
NY-454 (Veterans Memorial Highway) and Broadway Avenue (CR-18), Holbrook
NY-112 (Medford Avenue) and Horseblock Road (CR-16), Medford
NY-27 (Sunrise Highway) and Lakeland Avenue, Bohemia

No Flash!

This morning in the dark a car went through the red light southbound on Old Nichols Road and Express Drive North. He did not get a flash. This area is dimly lit and I don't think the camera saw the plate. Is it possible that Suffolk County is turning off red light cameras so that new cameras can be installed elsewhere? The reason would be to stay within the current State-ordered 50 locations.

Yet Another

Saw a posting on Long Island Gas Prices about a camera at:

Sunrise Highway (NY-27) South Service Rd and Medford Ave (NY-112), Patchogue

I cannot confirm it but it makes sense as the Red Lights Cameras POI file already has an entry for the North Service Road at this location.

I currently count 46 locations and possibly 47 RLC's if Lakeland turns out to have two lights installed.

Are we talking about the same road? At this Sunrise/Lakeland intersection,
http://tinyurl.com/3ggkvok
there is DEFINITELY a RLC. Just today, I was northbound on Lakeland and had gone under Sunrise to wait at the light on the north side, having just missed the light for making a left. As I came to a stop, a pickup going southbound made a right onto the service road--and the south-facing RLC flashed (no right on red permitted there).

I hadn't really been thinking about RLCs at the time; I saw the flash as I was waiting there and this thread popped into my head.

Just to be clear, it was on the southbound side of Lakeland Ave/CR 93, just north of the westbound service road.

What's to stop the .gov from installing many more than 50, but randomly activating/de-activating them to only have 50 working at any one time? Would leave us guessing and minimize the value of the poi file. Akin to parking empty police cars on the side of the road.

Nothing

[quote=perpsterWhat's to stop the .gov from installing many more than 50, but randomly activating/de-activating them to only have 50 working at any one time?

Nothing except for the fact it is not the .gov doing the installation but a private company for a cut of the take. Installing cameras that are not active will cut into their bottom line. Perhaps they are willing to take the hit but paying to install perhaps 75 and only getting income from 50 would be a waste of the company's money.

I had seen this one posted on the Suffolk CFL map at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=2134... . However, without independent verification it could not be reported (I only report to Miss POI those I have actually seen with my own eyes). Looking at that intersection in Google Streetview I can see it is a rather convoluted arrangement with traffic lights at just about every place you look. If there were RLC's there I am sure they would be pretty obvious.

I am going to see about taking a trip on Sunrise between NY-110 and Straight Path next week. Considering I found three between Straight Path and NY-109 last week, I have a sneaking suspicion there are some lurking between NY-110 and Straight Path that have not yet been found.

It is possible but I think that information would have been public when the contract was signed. I read nothing about that when it was announced. I know NYC moves them around but I do not know if DOT is responsible for their cameras or if they were contracted out. NYC has been doing it a long time and if there is a contractor they may have added a clause for that in a later contract. Don't know...

NYC has had RLCs installed for ages, and I've never read anything about who actually operates them. Could be that NYC bought them years ago - some of them look like they have been in place for years.

I agree about the age. The one in Douglaston went in eons ago and compared to the "modern" RLC's, it looks like an old Dumont TV.

I assume that had Nassau wanted to play the rotating active camera game, they would have installed more than fifty by now. I doubt it crossed anyone's mind at the time the contract was signed to do that. Perhaps the next fifty Nassau signs on for may have such a clause. Apparently approval is being held up in the Assembly and there is a little doubt now as to whether or not Nassau will get its additional fifty. The Assembly committee chair responsible for RLC legislation is questioning the county's claim that it is all about safety when they are now writing budgets to use RLC fine money to fund youth programs and such. Apparently he believes in truth-in-advertising.

OK, I went back and did a more careful review. Here's what I found:
I saw nothing--no camera, no sign--on northbound Lakeland Avenue and the eastbound service road. I also saw nothing on the eastbound service road. Nothing on Lakeland northbound at the westbound service road (but perhaps there isn't room after the overpass).

Southbound, I saw both a Photo Enforced sign and the camera. The weird part was that I also saw something on the north-west corner of the WB service road and Lakeland (just south of the southfacing camera)--but pointing FACING approaching traffic on the WB service road. It looked something like this:

Facing approaching traffic

At other locations where a bridge or driveway is in the way of the usual installation, I have seen cameras that face approaching traffic, and they were installed at the same time as other red light camera equipment at the intersection. This is at LIE north service road and Old Nichols Road at exit 58, and LIE north service road and Motor Parkway at exit 57. NY State requires a front license plate.
