Signal Time Shortening in Missouri

A paper presented at the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) annual meeting two years ago offered a justification for shortening the duration of yellow warning times at intersections prior to the installation of red light cameras. Until then, the relation between signal-time shortening and automated enforcement has been anecdotal. Springfield, Missouri's former traffic engineer, Earl E. Newman, provided a formal, twenty-page defense that revealed the idea ultimately came from a red light camera salesman.

Talk about greed &

Talk about greed & stupidity!

Again, the object is getting people to break the law even if you have to change the parameters, & collect lot's of money.

And you ask why politicians are thought to be untrustworthy, corrupt & deserving of long jail sentences!

And that's not a gut reaction!

I don't get it

It would seem to me that in world class cities, NFL cities, cities capable of hosting Olympic games, etc., etc., basically, traffic systems operate smoothly, and red light and speed cams are a fact of life. They catch lawbreakers, plain, and simple.

For any place to stoop to where they actually make changes to trap folks such as above, it just says something about the type of place it is.

The worst, and I won't mention any names, are cities where they have deployed red light cams, and knowingly have no synchronization of the lights, i.e. vehicles speed off at the correct velocity from a light, only to see the next turn yellow then red. Do this for miles and setup 10+ red light cams along the way, that ensures the opposite of a world class city. smile

Short Green Signal

On a recent trip I ran across an intersection that while on the main route only allowed 2 cars to get through the green light before switching quickly to yellow and then red. But it allowed the side street to stay green for a long while with no cars coming from either direction. It seems to me it was done to frustrate drivers while a police car sat down the street. I took 3 green light changes to get through the intersection.
