Can the new garmin software alert you when you are over a set speed limit

I've got an older Nuvi 660 and I've noticed the newer Garmin software puts a speed limit indicator on the screen to help you see the speed of the street that you are on.

I'm wondering if there is a way to tell those new Nuvi's to alert you when you are over that listed speed limit? I got hit with a radar ticket today, which I plan to ignore and try to beat. They claim that I just happend to be doing 11 over the limit, which is when the camers in AZ are programmed to go off. It was a 35 mph and they said I was doing 46 mph.

So if the newer Nuvi's can alert you to a preset amount over the listed speed limit, I would consider giving my wife the older 660 and getting a newer unit for myself since I'm on the road much more than she is.

And if anyone has any advice for beating a radar ticket from a mobile van in Phoenix, please chime in. If I do end up going to court, I'm going to argue the camera wasn't working correctly because I can show, via my work email account, that I sent an email 2 minutes after the ticket happend and the location of the camaera is 10 minutes from my office.

Not possible for me to be in two places at one time, so the camera was not working correctly.

Thanks

.

No, there is no way to have the Nuvi alert you if you are exceeding the posted speed limit.

All that shows is that (1) the clock on your computer and the clock on the camera may not match or (2) you were driving SUPER fast and did indeed get to your office in two minutes. Maybe not the best argument to fight a speeding ticket!!

I'm not looking to use the GPS to prove or disprove my speed. Instead I"m curious to know if the little speed limit sign that says 55 on it can allow the unit to alert you if you are doing 61. This way, in the future, I'm not traveling more than 5 mph over the speed limit.

It's pretty cool that the speed limit sign shows up on the map while driving, but I'm hoping it's more functional than it is decorative.

Speeds

I think I mentioned something like this in another post. When I got my 750, I was surprised to see the speed limit signs on the Nuvi. I thought it would be cool to make it user programmable so it could alert you of different speeds. I could set it to be green if I'm traveling from 0 to 5 mph under the speed limit, change to yellow if I'm 0 to 5 over the speed limit, and red if I'm greater than 5 mph. The Nuvi knows my speed and it knows the speed limit on a lot of roads around here so it seems like it's just a software fix. Don't know if any of them do it yet but it would be cool to have.

That would be a heck of a feature if it does work. Maybe in Garmin future models? If they can embed speed limit onto the map, they should be able to add an option to alert the driver.

or (3) he uses his phone to send an email while driving. Bottom line is it proves nothing.

Found something similar...

to what you are looking for at www.fewercrashes.org Check out the video. I didn't see any date on the web site but it looks like someone has found a way to do the speed alerts and is looking for funding to proceed with the project. This was taken from the wiki page:

"Regardless of Insurance companies saving a billions of dollars each year. Infact a lots of lives would be saved as well. people really want this product because get it out there in the market as soon as possible. If no one can come up with the idea of how to do it in a more cost effective way than please contact me I have a great idea and I can put this application out there in the market for as little as few million dollars for research and data collection. We don't have to install transmitters on to every speed limmit sign which is extremely expensive idea. I have a better idea, and thank you for your interest. please contact me at tssurp@hotmail.com 571-276-9855 Shan"

Looks pretty cool though!

Tomtom has this feature, you can either setup a fixed speed alert, or a dynamic comparing to the current speed limit.
I have a garmin 760 and tomtom 730T, they should be at the same level, but 730T has much more features than the garmin one

Garmin speed alert

Garmin won't pop up speed alert but Navigon does. My Navigon 7200 does sound when you over speed limit.

I can confirm that the

I can confirm that the TomTom does have this feature, and not just on the high end units. It was on a XL330s I tried. It worked, and furthermore it worked in Canada, which doesn't seem to feature on Garmin's maps, maybe the 2012 update?

Old Buicks had this

I am pretty sure my grandfather's Buick with a very rudimentary mechanical dashboard that was made to look like a digital version (before the term digital was used for this) had a feature where you could set a warning chime to whatever speed you wanted. Funny to remember that mid-to-late 60's car feature upon reading this thread!

A lot of other manufactures supply this option, why Garmin doesn't???
Your guess would be as good as mine!

Don't know about a couple of months but if a large number of users requested it.You would see more action on it.Believe it or not they do listen to customers out there.

I've used this on my old Tom

I've used this on my old Tom Tom and it was really awesome. Many times I'm cruising down a road and I don't know the speed limit, so it would be great for Garmin to jump on top of this!

I think most of us know

I think most of us know Garmin has a weird way of looking at features in their model lineup. A good way to approach it is to remind them their competition has it. Be warned, you may get your wish. They will add it, but take away two other features on their next model. smile

for free even...

I've had this feature available on my Blackberry with a free GPS program, either Nav4All or AmazeGPS, and it had a voice that would alert you about your over speed. It would tend to get annoying after a while, mainly because I don't always assume the actual speed limit.

.

So, your car was speeding and you were in the office, ergo someone else was driving the car.

Turn them in and you get off.

I'd suggested that the speed indicator change colors when the limit was being exceeded and that there be a parameter to allow an alert for some user configured number of miles or kph over the limit.

I guess they just don't see the value.
