Nuvi price is dropping fast.

It is the time!

They were sold at a loptop price (350 $450-$550; 360 $550-650).

Since the "generic" GPS (such as MIO C310X) have been sold for under $200. The pressure is building up. Recently, Costco started selling 350 for $350, Amerzon is following. Last time I checked, a 360 is for ~$460. Another $50 drop will make these units more reasonablly priced.

Utility vs price

The way to look at it is: if you buy now and the price drops later, you've gotten that much $$$ utility out of thing, so it's not "wasted" money. You had the unit and used it while the price was dropping.

Somebody else waiting for the price to drop is not enjoying the utility of the GPS. Consider it opportunity cost.

When the price hits a level that you can afford yourself, buy it.

upgraded

Just upgraded my nuvi 200 to the 205. It came in today and I hope to be playing with it in an hour or two. I wanted the new features, the direction arrow, the speed limit informationa and the where am I function but could not justify the higher price of the more expensive units (especially in this economy). maybe later but not now. I paid $125 including shipping from Dell.com and got it in one day even though I paid for 3-5 day delivery (The warehouse it ships out of is only 150 miles away).

Price drop is good, but

Prices are dropping, and it is good news. But what about quality of devices and maps? There is always price to pay and I'm not sure it will be the companies like garmin to pay it.
Personally I would prefer device that cost more but is dependable and lasts "forever" than be surprised on the road that this really cute and cheap thing suddenly died on me. Somehow thought like "but it cost only $50" doesn't cheer me up, when I'm trying to get to my destination wink

nuvi 205

I just got one. Nuvi 205. First GPS ever, the salesperson was worried about not speaking street names, but it does not bother me. If you have one, don't forget to go to the web and update so you can have a free map. That was the only other complaint, someone didn't know that, and giving it a bad rating, made me read the reference.

Quality

grzesja wrote:

At least you have a resource here to find these things out before you buy. As an example, I have a Nuvi 350 and am aware that there have been issues with the power switch failing on some units. As a result, I have taken one posters advice and power the unit on and off by connecting/disconnecting power from the car adapter instead of using the power switch. I hardly ever use the power switch, so I'll be a gray haired old man before it finally fails. (Assuming it does-nothing has a 100% failure rate.)

Right you are

The price is dropping and the quality of the units sometime is in question! Some times the hardware is good but the software is lacking reliable updates!
In some areas the maps take long to update to the changes on the ground!
There are so many models that is difficult to track which units are preforming the best.

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations

Hard to understand why

I saw the 755T on the Best Buy web site for $279.99. We have 2 Best Buy stores within 10 miles of our house so to save shipping costs and the shipping delay I drove to the store. $449.99 in the store. I told them I saw it cheaper and they said they would price match. When I told them it was their own web site, they said they don't price match against their own ads. Huh??? Figured I was gonna be a smart alec and order it on line and pick it up in the store, as that is an option available on line. While I was on line I saw Amazon had it for $236.44 with free shipping. Ordered it from Amazon and got it 3 day later, which was 4 days earlier than they quoted me. 2 Days after I got my unit I noticed the price had dropped to 232.83, go figure.

Amazing...

this thread is almost 3 years old.

Here's a hint: consumer electronics tend to get cheaper over time, that's especially true for technologies which are going up the adoption curve, like GPSs.

But, it's true in general. I paid over $300 (over $1000 in 2009 dollars) for a 13" Sony Trinitron in 1979, and it didn't even have a remote. I can go out and buy a 50" flatscreen, high definition, TV, for that today. $1195 in 1978 ($3800 today) would get you a 16K Apple ][ computer, running at 1 MHz, and that didn't include a monitor or disk drive.

Dropping Prices

Is there a reason why the prices are dropping so quickly???

It's that time of year - Fa La La La La!

Most retailers are getting an early start on the holiday shopping season since the retail sector tanked last Christmas along with the economy. They early indicators were not that optimistic for this season either, so they are trying to make up for potential lost ground early.

Utility vs Price (but after Instant Depreciation)

I agree totally about the Utility vs Price tradeoff; I also suffer from terminal "early adoption" syndrome, especially on tech toys.

The only thing I'd add is, just like when you drive a new, name-brand car off the lot, it instantly loses re-sale value, independent of any utility you may get.

So finding the best price at least minimizes the depreciation hit, and then the utility vs price curve starts.

Get the best you can for what you want to do, pay the lowest you can, and then use the bejeebers out of it.

Drive safe.

It's interesting seeing the price quotes in the first few posts

They've really dropped since this thread was started, naturally yes - but the 12 month curve is amazing.

Glad I didn't have to have these (or my HD TV) day one. smile

Have A Great Day! Michael

Just saw the 1490T for $299.99 at Best Buy

That is a real heartbreaker. Not only because I paid $469.99 last July for it (and that was on sale from the $499.99 list), but with such a significant price drop in so short a time, it leads me to believe that only a few of us got suckered into the unit.

While I don't have too many spurrious problems like random shut offs or freezing anymore (from this refurb unit), the price/performance ratio of this model just doesn't seem to cut it.

In fact, for a Christmas present, I bought a friend the TomTom 340XL(?) widescreen, non-internet unit for only $99.99 because Target had them on sale at $150 off. She loves it, and it appears to be every bit the equal of the 1490T save for the screen size.

Garmin Pricing in general

Given the overall market conditions, I suspect Garmin aggressively markets (read: lowers pricing) their products close to cost, maybe even at an initial loss. That could force out less liquid competitors, increase their already large marketshare etc.
This marketing strategy is used e.g. for smartphones, consoles and similar fast-advancing technology.

For us as consumers, good news IMO.

Just make sure

Just make sure you do your homework well.

  1. Does the unit have the features of my last GPSr.
  2. Am I giving up features?
  3. Does it link completely to my cell phones features?
  4. Does it play MP3 audio, for smaller alert files?
  5. can the GPS'r load custom POI's either directly or through third party software?
  6. Has it been phased out by the manufacturer, and now sold in deep discount stores?
  7. Search as many forums as you can, looking for problems (i.e. Firmware).

Compare dollar for dollar all units and and manufactures for features, screen size and the user interface.
When you buy a car, there are not many aftermarket big ticket items that you will buy for it, and a GPS is one of them, That's why it's important to be educated when buying it.
TomTom, Garmin and Magellan are the main competitors, don't wear blinders when comparing and buying your new GPSr. Put your brand loyalties aside and get the very best unit for your money.

Wow, I'm amazed they do that. I've seen lower prices on amazon for stuff I've ordered within **24 hours** and didn't realize an adjustment was possible without going through the hassle of a return.

How did you even contact them? They don't make that easy to do.

Amazon Price Adjustment

On my order's page listing what I'd received there are two bottons on lower right. Customer service "email" and "phone".

I wrote via the "on screen format" a quick note referencing my order # and suggesting that as I was still within the 30 day return/refund period, would they please consider adjusting the price.

Got a message back stating they don't have a price guarantee policy but this one time they would adjust the price as I was a valued customer.

Don't know what might happen if I should make a similar request in the future but on this one I was very satisfied.

I've had several minor problems and have found Customer Service there to be very eager to please.

You would be spending money every other year for a new GPS. You wouldn't have to spend again (as long as you owned that GPS) with the lifetime maps. With the lifetime maps, you never get up to $180.

nickjr wrote:

I started using GPS before most of my friends had even heard about it. Back then, the units didn't speak the street names, and that's what I'm used to. Not sure I really need it, and for $79.97 + the latest map update for free, I can live without it.

BTW, I think it was OfficeMax or Office Depot who said the unit was discontinued. I don't know if that meant that it was discontinued by their store, or that Garmin had discontinued it. I guess we'll find out soon.
