OK time to fess up --- do you disable Garmin Safe Mode

Ok, I'll be the first ... the first to confess that the first thing I do with a new Garmin GPS is disable the "Safe Mode" so that I can fiddle with the touch screen while I fly down the expressway ... both eyes on the road and my third eye on the GPS screen.

I'm actual quite adept at drinking a pop, fiddling with the Garmin, and driving at the same time. I don't try to talk on the phone however. Hey, even I have my attention span limits!

Does anybody have their Garmin set to the Safe Mode.

Come on, fess up.

Yeah

Yeah, I started this thread ... and am now thinking I want the guy behind me to have his GPS in the SAFE MODE.

Of course, I don't have to have mine in the safe mode ... but depending on someone's driving record, the guy behind me might want to have his GPS in the safe mode.

it's not the gadget, it's the loose nut behind the wheel...

A few years ago there was a multiple-vehicle accident caused by one driver fumbling to put a new cassette into an in-dash cassette player.

Or, in the wonderful "Wizard of Id" comic strip (of many moons ago), Sir Rodney goes to the Wizard, and tells the Wizard that he saw a falling star while riding back to the castle last night. What does this portend?

The Wizard immediately tells him he's going to have an accident!

Sir Rodney asks how the Wizard can tell that from a falling star...

And the Wizard replies, "You're not keeping your eyes on the road!"

New technologies -- old problems.

Oh, mine have "safe mode" disabled. And I also have a number of other gadgets (ham radios) within arm's reach.

Happy new year!

Safe Mode - For the unrestrained

Why is it that we need "safe mode" in the first place? Because we need "Mommy" telling us what to do since we can never do the right thing if it's not convenient.

I don't need "safe mode" to keep me from fiddling with something while driving.

I have however had to drive with my knees to reattach the suction cup to the window. (no there was no warning for that!)

No way

Of course the safe mode was disabled during the initial set up. My wife is teaching me Italian so with my left hand holding the cell phone and the right waving frantically in the air, so that I can answer in Italian, how can I possibly poke at the gps? If I had another hand I could finish shaving or unfolding the morning newspaper.

Ok time to fess up

Yep me too I turn off safe mode. Cliff

.

The way I see it if there are people out there sending text messages while driving is using a GPS anymore dangerous? That being said, yes I did turn off the safe mode but I try to keep playing with it to a minimum unless stopped or using a POI for the next location. Does that make me dangerous??? Yeah probably so. But my road rage should be a much bigger concern to fellow motorist! razz

Strongly Agree... I do the Same

To me it is too stringent in not allowing you to change settings.

I may want to change what's displayed while I'm driving many of the rural roads around here with no traffic.

I am careful about it though. Anything that takes too much button pushing I won't do unless I'm stopped.

Changing settings on the Nuvi ain't half as hard as trying to get your favorite 8-track untangled from the player without breaking the tape at 70mph!
Besides, it's better than having the navigator shove an open paper map the size of a newspaper in front of you while telling you she's got the wheel. shock razz

but it is rare that I actually touch it while driving, and, when I have I am very careful about when and where I mess with it and ensure I am not near any traffic.

Who knew?

I never knew there was a safe mode. I don't think mine was enabled by default anyway, then.

I do put it up under the rearview mirror though so I can poke at it and still see the road if I need to tweak it.

Hmm. a new function I haven't tried. smile
