OK time to fess up --- do you disable Garmin Safe Mode

Ok, I'll be the first ... the first to confess that the first thing I do with a new Garmin GPS is disable the "Safe Mode" so that I can fiddle with the touch screen while I fly down the expressway ... both eyes on the road and my third eye on the GPS screen.

I'm actual quite adept at drinking a pop, fiddling with the Garmin, and driving at the same time. I don't try to talk on the phone however. Hey, even I have my attention span limits!

Does anybody have their Garmin set to the Safe Mode.

Come on, fess up.

I disabled the Safe Mode… rolleyes
Working in different parts of the county I need to be able to add a new location (address) while driving. Keeping one eye on the road and the other eye on the GPS. smile

I disabled too. Very upset

I disabled too.

Very upset that the factory gps in our new land rover doesn't give you the option to turn off the safe mode. It's such a pain to have to stop to find poi's.

I have mine disabled. That

I have mine disabled. That is really only there so you can't sue Garmin for fiddling with the gps while driving,

Yep!

Disabled from moment one!

I don't make it a habit of being distracted with its operation, but sometimes a button press is very helpful at a moment's notice.

I remember going to a meeting with my boss. She had an on-board GPS unit in her 4Runner. Despite my suggestion to use it from the get-go, she refused. Once she was lost (and moving along on the highway) she decided that it should be consulted. Since it was factory-disabled when the vehicle is in motion (or in Drive?) it sat there useless until she had to pull onto the shoulder. THAT was a pain!

I must confess though that she is an easily distracted driver who seems to feel more important than everyone else on the road. That is an unsettling combination at times. For the safety of others, I was kind of glad that the GPS unit was disabled while the vehicle is in motion (or Drive?).

Yes

disabled, but use it within reason depending on traffic conditions. If I get someone in front of me who is constantly hitting the brakes unpredictably I'd rather focus on them.

Easy to disable, difficult to re-enable

Mine's disabled simply because if you disable it when prompted, you have to dig into the setup menu to re-enable it.

I've rented cars from Hertz, with their NeverLost (by Magellan) system. It nags you the first time you try to use it while moving (saying that only the passenger should do that, and it's mounted on the passenger side), but once you acknowledge that message, it doesn't nag again until the next time you turn the ignition on. If Garmin's Safe Mode re-armed at poweron, it would make much more sense to me.

Oh yeah, and for those of you who said you let your wife handle the touch screen from the passenger seat ... say what?

One of the first things I did was teach my wife how to use it - just so she could run it while we drove.

Naturally, I disabled Safe Mode.

Safe for who?

jrsny wrote:

Why is it that we need "safe mode" in the first place? Because we need "Mommy" telling us what to do since we can never do the right thing if it's not convenient

We don't need it. Garmin does.

It's "Garmin corporate lawyer mandated liability reduction" mode. So, it's safer for Garmin, not safer for you.

Yes, "safe mode" is disabled on my Garmin.

Of Course

That was the 1st thing I did with my Garmin. Couldn't get used to stopping at the side of the road to plug in the next destination. What a pain that was! That's why we have two eyes...one for driving and one for the GPS. shock

Disable Garmin Safe Mode (yes or no)

I have the safe mode disabled, but before I go on a long trip I input the places I have to go. If you need to input data you should find a place to stop and do that.
Stop at a rest stop, wait for a fuel stop, and if there is no time wait for the next exit and pull over, input data and continue to the next highway entrance.

Operating safely is not only for you, but for the others traveling beside, behind and also with you in the car.

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations

Mine have it disabled, I can

Mine have it disabled,
I can multi task and avoid accidents easily,
Grew up on a farm using machines that keep you busy with variuos issues as you go around the fields.
Fiddling with the GPS is kept to a minimum, buy doable.

but.... like another person said, "I use it within reason depending on traffic conditions".

Disabled

I have my in-dash Kenwood/Garmin unit set with Safe mode off. I also grounded the parking brake wire so it would never detect the parking brake not being set.

I apply these rules:
- I figure 'safe mode' has more to do with lawyers than safety.
- driving is the first job. On city streets or in urban areas I make it a rule (admittedly, sometimes break) to not screw with the cell phone, GPS, radio, etc. Really, drive first.
- If I'm at a stop light (stopped) then make changes to the GPS if needed.
- If I'm traveling down some rural highway driving is still first but I really don't think it's such a big deal to be on the phone, looking at the GPS, or changing the radio station. Your main job of driving is basically keeping the car going at a constant speed and in a straight line. You're not trying to negotiate other traffic, pedestrians, traffic signals, etc. Yeah, you're going faster but it really doesn't take a great deal of concentration to drive in a straight line.
- I have made it a habit to put in my destination before leaving where I start from. The main goal of this, even if I know the route, is that if a traffic incident comes up the GPS will alert me and then I can route around it.

If my daughter is in the car then she handles the GPS. I tell her, "Find us a place to eat along the road," and she goes through the menu and sets it up and then tells me what's coming up. Works pretty well.

To me, this is a common sense approach.

Common Sense Approach

I disable SAFE Mode but as stated above, utilize a common sense approach when driving.

Just found out

I didn't even know there was a safe mode until I was visiting mom. She was driving so I tried to do a search and up pops a warning about Safe Mode. I disabled it then because I wasn't driving. I guess all the times I was driving, I never did anything that wasn't "unsafe."

Changing the gps while operating a car is far more of a hazard than talking on the phone. If people do this, they will make it a law that the manufacture make the units that will eliminate this feature..

I don't think it will be long until Lawmakers take control of this aspect of our lives and make it so all GPS units sold have a permanent safe mode that can't be disabled.

FWIW, You can't turn off the "Safe Mode" with Ford's latest factory installed navigation system. I suspect this is due to concerns over being sued by someone who gets in an accident while poking away at things. Ford might feel that the onscreen warning doesn't cover them.

Disabled since day 1

I make sure the mount location is within my wife's arms reach so she can touch and play with it while I'm driving. (mind out of the gutter please)

Don't need safe mode...

I've got my wife sitting in the seat next to me - she yells and screams at me (in the nicest way possible) any time I think about reaching for the Nuvi when we are moving. I'm getting to the point where I don't dare touch it.

Safe Mode

lolol....You have a double safe mode on when traveling with you better half.
When you traveling by your self do you have the safe mode on or off....lolol
In my case I have off, but with my family I have double, triple and some time quadruple safe warnings.... lol, but you ( We all ) have to be paying attention to the traffic around us.

I got into 3 accidents rearending people on the highway, trying to enter new adress' for a new destination. It happens, if not that then something else, i find it more dangerous pulling over and getting rear ended.

But you may get rear ended by someone programming their GARMIN that has defeated the Safe Mode!!
Now there is a paradox for ya!!
