OK time to fess up --- do you disable Garmin Safe Mode

Ok, I'll be the first ... the first to confess that the first thing I do with a new Garmin GPS is disable the "Safe Mode" so that I can fiddle with the touch screen while I fly down the expressway ... both eyes on the road and my third eye on the GPS screen.

I'm actual quite adept at drinking a pop, fiddling with the Garmin, and driving at the same time. I don't try to talk on the phone however. Hey, even I have my attention span limits!

Does anybody have their Garmin set to the Safe Mode.

Come on, fess up.

Didn't know

Didn't know there was such a mode. I wouldn't have it enabled anyway. I can decide for myself when it is safe to operate the GPS. I don't want it to decide that for me.

disabled

disabled..to save gas...from having to stop to punch in new directions.

Disabled...

Mine is disabled. My wife can't (won't) figure out how to use it so that's not an option. Plus there's something about me not having it while I drive -- almost as bad as letting someone else hold the remote control while I watch TV smile

Worry more about drivers that, completely look off the raod

I would worry more about drivers that have Built in GPSr units, these units are usually below the dash level and actually take mental ability's to focus on the unit and while doing so you completely look off the road and when you look back up you must refocus on the road.. Now these units are really dangerous.

The build in units that have a sight line below the dash level, and should always be locked while the car is moving, even with a passenger.

I would fall asleep

If I disabled it, I would fall asleep while driving.

Well, I disabled it, but didn't inhale.

I have disabled it, and have been good at not fiddling with it while moving, especially in traffic. That said, I've never really needed to change directions in the middle of a trip in progress. If I do, I'm usually stopped for something else anyway. My twelve year old is more than happy to make necessary adjustments.

I can say that I don't initiate phone calls or read / reply / compose text messages or emails on my smartphone while moving either, but most people also wouldn't believe that... crying

I don't remember disabling it but it must be because I have changed some settings while driving.

Mine is off... I cant imagine, not being able to use it if i need to... though my wife usually pushes the buttons when she's in the car

Now Thats Funny

Yea I do the same thing, I disabled the safe mode, but the difference between you and I is that I do not "fiddle" with the device while "flying" down roads. I usually drive.

I don't know about that, but the 17" wide screen flat panel monitor hooked up to my portable DvD player works great on my dashboard to watch movies as I drive!

Turned it off.

...the only reason they even offer the feature...

Interesting, but not a huge surprise: the verdict is close to unanimous for Disabled, here. You know the only reason Garmin even offers the feature is not because Safe Mode is something users want, but just to make it hard for somebody to win a lawsuit against Garmin when an accident results because somebody was fiddling with a GPS.

I rented a car once that had a built-in GPS and as far as I could tell, there was no option to disable Safe Mode in the menus that I could find. That's kind of silly because it is possible that the unit is being controlled by the passenger rather than the driver. You had to be stopped to make any entry to it.

Safe Mode Disabled

Like almost everything in life, driving is a dangerous activity and there is no way to make it totally safe. I try to limit my interaction with my Nuvi to times when there is little traffic around me. So basically, I inherently understand that driving is dangerous and am prudently cautious but I don't feel the need to idiot proof my use of caution.

>>limit interaction with nuvi when there is little traffic

I, too, limit my GPS tinkering to times when there is little traffic around ... or until I run off the side of the road and hit those thump-thump-thump-thump shoulder bumps (which are designed to wake up sleepy truck drivers .... and folks like me who mess with their GPS's while moving.)

Man, are we all "bad to the bone," or what with this "SAFE MODE" setting.

safe mode

Changing the gps while operating a car is far more of a hazard than talking on the phone. If people do this, they will make it a law that the manufacture make the units that will eliminate this feature. I never touch my unit once the car is moving. I found it is not necessary to touch it, if you have enter the information correctly. You can program it to show and poi that you want to view on your track to where you are going.
