Three "secret" screens

I'm fairly new to GPS, and very new to this board, but I've found something interesting with my Nuvi 760, and see no mention of it on the forums (however, it probably is and I just couldn't find it. If so, sorry.).

Long story short, I had a Nuvi 680 and got a 760. What I missed was the satalite acquisition screen. It wasn't in the manual.

I called Garmin, and after talking to two techs, the second one told me how to get to it: press and hold the sat signal icon for a couple of seconds. Viola, it worked!

That however got me thinking... What else is hidden and undocumented? So, some button-pressing later, I found two others.

#2: A multi page info and diagnostics screen. Get to it by pressing the battery-level icon for several seconds.

#3 some sort of sat info page. Get to it from the "dashboard" screen by pressing and holding the miles-per-hour display in the center of the screen.

My dumb question of the day: why isn't this stuff in the manual?!?! Especially the satellite screen? That makes no sense to me. (I even downloaded the complete manual; nothing there either).

Secret Screen

I knew tips #1 and #2, but I have not found out how to do it with your tip #3 yet. Which dashboard screen is it?

they are for tech's

the screens are for tech to use and if you are not sure what you are you doing you may mess up your GPS

NUVI 5000 & NUVI 200W

Good Reply dstith76

Rightly so, there are 'secrete' screeens. Aside from the satellite one, the rest are for the techs. Mess with them and they'll know it and you'll mess up your Nuvi.
As for the speed one, you've got to be on a route, then press the mph and it will bring up another tech screen.
Not a good idea to mess with the 'secrete' screens.

NUVI 5000 & NUVI 200W

wow

thanks for pointing that out. The satellite acquisition screen is really neat. Everything you mentioned also works on my Nuvi 265wt.

This screen was helpful when I had a Magellan (and it wasn't hidden). I can see the other two as being a tech thing, but they're still interesting to look at.

Thanks!

cool,

worked on my 770.

cool

Also, if you are a few

Also, if you are a few screens into a program or whatever, if you hold the Back button on the bottom left for a few seconds, it will take you back to the main page so you don't have to keep pressing back, back, back etc.

These have been discussed before, but it is always good to get refreshers. Sometimes, you forget about little things like this that can help.

The "Dashboard" creen is

The "Dashboard" screen is probably not the correct term. It just looks like a dashboard to me.

To get there (in a 760, unsure of others) go to map view, then press the display in the lower left (where arrival time would be if you were driving a route.
From the resulting screen, press the miles per hour display.

I do see the point of keeping the one tech screen (the one wiht all the controls) hidden, but this sat data one appears to have no controls, so I see no reason for them to hide it from the owners of the GPS's.

The satellite display screen, surely, should be in the manual.

I'm very impressed with the 760 so far, but the manual, not so much. smile

press lower right on boot

press lower right on boot Screen for a several second it will ask for format device.

they are for tech's

As there is no configuration on those screens, I agree, they should be listed in the manuals

I need to check it out also. The other day I went for a Dr. appointment and my Garmin was 'searching' the entire 15 min drive. I found it on my own and gave up.

Thnks for the link, Bob G! I see they have two of the screens I found. They also have a tip that is critical for me: how to get the estimated time of a journey! I've been wishing my GPS has that, and it does!

enter your route or destination, hit go, then press the bottom-right of the screen to bring up the coming turns, then hold the down arrow until it beeps a couple of times, and you're at the end of the list, and there you'll find the number of hours. I love thaT No more mental arithmetic for long drives. Thanks!

Press lower right on boot

This is called a "Hard Reset" I believe. If you continue it resets all user settings. Then proceeds with a new device set up.

I will have to check this out too. I hate that things don't have a complete manual. All they include is a lame instruction page and maybe a CD if you are lucky.

This is complaint of every Garmin Owner.... it's not just this unit.

The manuals are very lacking in their description of the features of these units. And it's a shame, because if you knew how powerful these things can be you would be more impressed.

It makes you appreciate this forum even more !

Excellent information, and

Excellent information, and thanks to Seaworthy for that link.

Can anyone say if the same three (and only those) screens are on all Nuvis?

not on all nuvis

The satellite data accessible from the satellite constellation screen is not available on the early nuvi 200 because that unit does not even have the satellite constellation screen. Later 200's (which may actually re-badged 205's depending on date of manufacture) may have it, but I'm not certain.

Manual?

I think the whole point of Nuvi and similar GPS units are... pick up and go.

Most, if not all the features they list on the product page are straight forward and should easily be doable without a manual. Bluetooth? multi-point routes? turning on text to speech? Even changing the vehicle icon?

Some things, like the Satellite screen are far too advance for "pick up and go" people.

And while you do appreciate these forums for the extra stuff... it's more advanced than most need. Granted, I'm here on this forum... but I doubt I'll be using any of the features not mentioned on the product page. Though I did try the "high power" setting in one of the "secret" screens... but the setting didn't stay (or something). The audio to my radio is too low.

So you have a poor owners manual, no problem, we have Gary Hayman. He has put together his own manual that you will find better than anything that Garmin will ever give you.

Thanks for the useful tips!

It's tech stuff

you are gaining acess to the error report screen by pressing the MPH icon.

No-one should play with the diagnostics, this is meant for troubleshooting and the average person would never need that level of detail. Most people just want the Garmin to give directions.

Just wait until you see what you can do when you press and hold two or more icons???

good luck.

Great tips, thanks. The one I will probably use a lot is the satellite info screen. I've noticed while traveling that locking on can sometimes take upwards of 5 minutes, so it will be nice to see exactly what is going on.

Does anyone know if the 265T has WAAS? If so - how do you turn it on and off.

Same 3 should work for the 200, do for the 250.
