Garmin Nuvi 255W

I have been using Garmin Nuvi 255W for last 2 days and so far fairly happy with it. TTS sounds little robotic sounding but I can live with it. I have heard that you can set proximity alerts on this unit that will alert you when you are approaching school zone, traffic cameras and red light cameras etc...

Default list of POI does not have traffic cameras or redlight cameras ... Do I have to pay for that or I can download it from somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

internal poi question

Is there a way to have the internal POI's show on the screen when navigating? I can see them when I tap the screen, but not while in the navigation mode. BTW I have the 265wt.

zoom in...

You have to zoom the moving map screen in to 200-300ft or less in order to see the POIs.

icons

I can see my custom ones but not the ones that are included in the maps, unless I tap the screen.

Newbie

So are these custom POI's the way you have POI's show up on your map? I just got mine recently and cant figure out to have certain factory POI's show up on the map when i drive by like my Tom Tom did. The documentation that comes with these things are very poor on their use. I have a 255w btw.

Garmin doesn't normally display poi unless you are zoomed in very close (300 feet or less). As to the options on displaying built-in POI, go to the Garmin Web site and download the owner's manual for your 255. The Getting Started documentation leaves A LOT to be desired.

Oh, and welcome to the site.

Thanks for all of the great

Thanks for all of the great info on this thread. As soon as I get my USB cable, I'll be on my way! Too bad the Garmin didn't come with one.

If you have a digtal camera, try the usb cable that came with it. I use the one from my Sony and it works fine.

Thanks. I am excited I found this site. I just got a 4gb sd card, but i can't figure out how to put my vehicle icons or POIs onto the sd card. I would rather use the SD Card memory instead of the Garmins. Any suggestions?

Skip the SD card. Your 255 has a lot memory. It will handle a lot of POIs and vehicles. Search all the post on memory and you will see most user don't use a SD Card.

A 4 Gig SD card is a little overkill. As your unit does not handle MP3 files, a 1 Gig probably would have about doubled the amount of available memory.

The SD Card has to be set up the same as the base unit, so copy - recreate - the file structure using \Garmin as the root folder. When you run POILoader, tell it to put the files on the SD card (listed as a second drive letter). POILoader will remember your selection and will copy all files to the card until you select the main unit. I think the 255 will only run POI files, WAV alert sounds and pictures from the SD Card.

Garmin Feature I noticed

I was looking through my garmin and I noticed a new feature, my Garmin Nuvi now tells me the time to the next direction. I love it and just noticed it. Does then happen for anyone else?

When I press the top left of the screen to get the next direction its states the time and has a countdown. I noticed the time counting down when I did something else...

Red Light Cameras

You can make your own POI list, if you know how or you can pay through this website or others or if you post 3 comments, etc. to this website you will get the file for free; I believe. Hope that helps. I have the 255W as well; X-mas present.

No words for the makers of these devices that has USB interface and not include the USB cable. They can't even include $2 cable with $200 device.

setting proximity alert

In the POI loader load maunaly not automatic. You can next when the file with the red lights is at the top click on the feet and enter the distance you want.

POI Sources

You can download traffic camera POIs on this site. Just click on the "Red Light Tab" in the upper right corner of your screen.

BTW: My wife and I have used a Nuvi 265 WT since 2009 and it does a great job. I.m sure you'll enjoy using your Nuvi.

The 255 is considered

ddot430 wrote:

a basic model. In the current line up it would be one of the two digit units like a 40. The 700 series was an advanced unit while the 765 was a premium, the same as the 800 series. The same can be said of the next line, the 1000's being "basic", the 2000s being "advanced" and the 3000 units the "premier."

Depending on what you need/want in a unit your best option may be to get and older discontinued unit and add traffic and or lifetime maps. There are standard features on these units that will never be seen again - like audio out jacks, MP3 playback and FM radio output.

new here

I've had the 255W for may years now and am excited to have found such a resource. This is especially true living in Chicago where red light cameras are abundant.

I'm really hoping updating this thing with new POI's will be straight forward. I feel like I am pretty tech savvy and resilient, does anyone have any first time advice? I've already been through most of the "learn" tab, and will continue to read as much as I can.

Thanks!

run pOI loader

Download and install Garmin POI Loader from Garmin.com - free download. Connect the GPS to the computer with the USB cable. Run POI Loader. It will recognize the GPS. Choose the radio button to remove all POIs. Follow the prompts. This removes all Custom POIs. The Garmin built-in POIs which are part of the map are unaffected.

After removing all Custom POIs, run POI Loader again to load new Custom POIs.

also correct

This is also correct, but not for a novice.

POI or saved place?

Saved places have to be deleted from the unit's screen and can't be deleted using POI Loader.

Box Car is right. Without knowing exactly how the term POI is being used by the OP, there are two possible solutions to the issue of deleting locations. POI Loader does overwrite an existing file every time POI Loader is run, but saved places and favorites have to be removed manually from the unit by editing the list using the Nuvi screen.
