Garmin Nuvi 255W

I have been using Garmin Nuvi 255W for last 2 days and so far fairly happy with it. TTS sounds little robotic sounding but I can live with it. I have heard that you can set proximity alerts on this unit that will alert you when you are approaching school zone, traffic cameras and red light cameras etc...

Default list of POI does not have traffic cameras or redlight cameras ... Do I have to pay for that or I can download it from somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Red Light and speed cameras are available here at POI-Factory, however I believe there is a charge for the files unless you are an active user. It takes 5 weeks of monitoring and posting to be classified as an active user.

If you go to the Garmin Garage website, there are several programs you can download that will help customize your unit. Download and install the Garmin Communicator, POI Loader and Web Updater. From here, you can download additional vehicle icons, voices for your unit and other goodies.

While the 255 is a new unit, you may need to do an update using Web Updater before the new voices will work. It also helps (tremendously) to have external storage for your NUVI. I recommend a 2 GB SD card for your particular model.

Have fun, and welcome to the site.

Setting Proximity alert on Nuvi 255W

I have downloaded custom POI file form this site in csv format and using POI loader uploaded into my Nuvi 255W. I was trying to set the proximily alert using the unit as per instructions in the manual that is on the website and my unit does not show the option for setting proximity alert settings. I called the Garmin Tech Support and they told me that 255W does not have that feature... Is it true ? He was not very sure and had to look around for this particular problem after putting me on hold.
Any help is appriciated.
Thanks.
PS. I basically want unit to alert me when I enter the School Zone Speed Limit.

poi

set them before you install them in your unit ,you have a choice to set the distance away you want the alarm .in the poi loader program

Where do I do that ?

Where do i do that? in the software ?
I am using POI loader from Garmin.
Thanks for your help.

proximity alerts

It's easy to set proximity alerts.

If file name has "speed" or "redlight", the garmin poi loader will automatically set proximity alerts appropriate for the files.

If you want to set your own proximity alerts, select "manual" option in poiloader instead of "automatic" ... and it will step you through all of your poi's and allow you to set your own distances and speed.

Will it alert me if I am going to a diffrent location and one of the custom POI with alert (school) is on the way which i have not selected as a via point. In other words....if i am passing one of the custom POI on my way to differnt destination, and custom poi is happened to be on that road...

The alert will sound if you are passing near one of the points in the file. As long as the trigger is on your route, the alert will sound. This includes when you just have the unit on and displaying the map without having input a destination.

Red light and speed camera POI

Just pay the 5 bucks for the month or 20 for the year and you can update the POI on red light and speed cameras from POI factory. I did it the first day- it's easy and works great.

I have tried few times setting up audio alert that says "School Zone ahead. Slow Down" following instructions on this site http://brillharts.com/GarminAlerts/

I am not having success on the audio part. If someone have done this on Nuvi 255W or similar unit which doesn't have mp3 support, please post the procedure.
Thanks.

Did you download the sox

Did you download the sox file at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip ?

Once you download it unzip the file and right click and copy it.Now click on my computer, then click your local disk. You will see a file called Garmin.Open it up and paste the sox file there.
Go to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and type in what you want to say on file.Follow instructions to save.It will save as a wave file. Now put this wave file you created in the same folder as the school zone.Name csv and wave file the same name.Don't type nothing but the name and double check they are the same.Run custom poi in simulation mode to see if it works. You will have to run poiloader in manual mode for the alert to work unless you see a speed in the file name like school zone @25

No. when you click on the link above and get to the RapidShare page, click on the "Free user" button which will take you to the actual download page. Then, click on the "Download" button to start the download.

Its only a 428KB file so it should download quickly on any broadband connection.

What web browser are you using?

Try this: close your web browser and delete all the temporary internet files. Re-start the browser and try again.

Do you use any kind of a download manager? If so, try turning it off temporarily.

I tried downloading with Firefox.
When i paste that link in firefox, I see Rapidshare logo in the middle of the page and under that
it says ... FILE DOWNLOADED.
then there is a file name under taht along with the file size which is 428KB. BTW file is not clickable on this page.
under that i see 2 meteres. one for free user and other for premuim user...
when i click on Free user.. i see that same logo

Maybe Rebooting The PC

The part of the message that says "Your IP address (shows my IP here) is already downloading a file. Please wait until the download is completed" tells me that the RapidShare website thinks it has an open download session in progress with your PC.

You may have to try rebooting your PC and if you have a router, try power cycling it, also.

proximity alerts and the nuvi 265T

I just got off the phone with Garmin technical support who told me my 265T does NOT have the proximity alert feature.

"...If you want to set your own proximity alerts, select "manual" option in poiloader instead of "automatic" ... and it will step you through all of your poi's and allow you to set your own distances and speed...."

The Garmin POI Loader (downloaded it today from Garmin) doesn't have an option for manual configuration.

The 265T is a nice piece of equipment with a lot of features, but I feel a little cheated when they tell me it has something and it doesn't have it. The User Manual even says it's there.

Are you using a Mac by any chance? If so, you need to download the beta version of POI Loader from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32218 .
If you are not on a Mac, look again -- it shows "Express" mode and there is a dropdown to give you the "Manual" option.

You download the files, put them into a folder and then use the free Garmin program POILoader to process them into a GPI file.
