Garmin Nuvi 2455LMT Turns off

This has just started with my Garmin Nuvi 2455LMT and wonder if anyone else is having the issue.

I plug my Garmin in to the cigarette liter and it then program where I want to go. All is working great, then out of no where, The Garmin shuts down (or so I thought). After turning it back on, and watching the screen, I see that it thinks it is being plugged into a usb on my computer (I see the white icon with a pc picture)

Now, I do a factory reset and find it is still doing this issue. Not sure what is going on, just happens, sometimes it takes a while but it will happen (and just when I need it).

I can unplug it and it does work fine but then I do not get the traffic I use.

Any ideas?

sounds like

it is a problem with your cable. There may be a short in the unit so the data lead is being tripped causing the unit's changes.

Cable/socket?

Could it be an intermittent short in one of the leads of the traffic/power cable or the connector—or worse, an intermittent problem with the USB socket on the nuvi? You have already tried the other options I'd suggest (reset, etc.)

This may be a situation needing a phone call to Garmin Customer Support and possible warranty swap of GPS and traffic/power cable.

One test you could do is to power up the nuvi with traffic cable in your vehicle, then wiggle the cable, especially near each end where it connects to the base or USB plug.

Could Be either

I too believe it could be either the 12V power cable or the USB connector on the Nuvi. Many times this damage is caused by having stress on the cable.
To reduce this stress, in the future, I suggest you wrap the cable around whatever mount your using 1 or 2 turns. Whatever stress there is will now be directed to the mount and protect your USB port.

Recently my friends 265WT had the same problem, the wire was frayed in a hard to detect area. It was right at the joint where it mounts to the USB connector, the sleeve with the grooves in it.

I was able to repair his making a sort of metal casing over it then wrapping it in tape. There is no longer any flexibility at the joint and the cable is working properly again.

power adaptor

Are you using the Garmin power adaptor that came with your nuvi or somthing else?

I Believe He's Using the Garmin GTM36 cable

I would imagine he's using the original Garmin cable and not a generic one since he states "I can unplug it and it does work fine but then I do not get the traffic I use."

dirt in the mini uSB connector?

Could there be dirt in the mini-USB connector either on the cable or on the nuvi?

To answer most of your questions..

Thanks for all the info..

Yes the cable is the original one that came with it.

Yes, I am aware of the tension on the cable and connection, that is why I do wrap it around the mount to release any tension that might be to the connection.

I used can air to blow out any dirt or other debris
that might be inside.

I also used a different cable that I had that doesn't have the traffic and that also had the same issue..

I am beginning to think it is the connection on the unit itself. It does charge when it is plugged in. I also know that I can use it without it turning off when its NOT plugged in (but as I said, I lose the traffic info)

Maybe I need to turn off the settings to see the device as a hard drive? would that work maybe?

Agggg... maybe its just time for a newer unit.. I do like this one however...

Soft reset

Have you tried a soft reser?

If your nuvi, dezl, LIVE series or Camper/RV device is frozen or will not power on, the device may need a soft reset.

To power the device off with the soft reset, press and hold the power button or hold the power switch in the on position for 8-10 seconds.

In some cases, the device may even appear to be dead and refuse to power on from external power. This can be corrected by performing the soft reset while the device is connected to a power source with a USB cable, vehicle power cable, or an AC adapter.

These steps are applicable to nuvi, dezl, LIVE series or Camper/RV devices, except as noted below.

nuvi 300 & 600 series:

Press and hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds (the reset button is located under the antenna on the back of the device)

nuvi 500, 800 & 805 series:

Remove and reinsert battery

nuvi 5000:

Unplug from power and then reconnect device

Once the soft reset is successful, it is recommended that you update the software on the device. Full step-by-step instructions for this process can be found in the FAQ article below:

Connector on unit

Regretfully, it looks like the connector on the unit is the problem.

USB Connection On Main Board?

Since you tried a hard reset as well as most other possibilities, I agree with your assumtion and believe it's the USB connector on the Nuvi.
The solder connections to the main board can be quite delicate, if one wire is not making a good connection it can go into the PC mode as you describe.

Do you have a Genuine Garmin wall charger for it?
If yes, plug it into the Nuvi and see if it goes into user mode and charging.

Have you tried plugging it into your car and ever so gently wiggle the wire at the USB connector on the Nuvi and see if that changes things.

Although not relevant in your situation, if the Traffic Icon doesn't appear, it may take up to 20 minutes to get a traffic signal in some cases, so patience is needed.

Edited: For more information on bad solder joints to boards click on the link and scroll down to
Loose\Broken Mini USB Port. It indicates your model 2555 is subseptible to solder failure.

Traffic not a good test

Agree with muell9k that Traffic is not a good test. It is flaky when working properly!

A follow up about this issue!

I thought I would follow up on this issue that I have.

After I did a full reset, I went back in and turned on the Mass Storage so that I could do a backup. I never turned MTP back on..

After placing in the car, and turning it on, the problem came back.. So I came here for so more ideas ( thanks guys btw!)

I decided while sitting in the car waiting for my wife to check the MTP/Mass Storage settings. After seeing it in Mass Storage, I reset it back to MTP and restarted the device.

Been driving now for a while and it has not shut down at all (or go into USB mode)

Now, I cant tell if it is due to maybe the cord or the USB/Charge area decided to work or if this is helping it not shut down.

I am going to reset it back to mass Storage to see if the problem pops up again or what. I will report the finding here when I know more.

If this is answer, I hope it will help others with this or close to this type of problem.
