Although I'm a PC person, my first suggestion given your results is to try a different USB cable and try a different USB socket on your iMac.
You did unplug it from the USB after install? Open Garmin Express and remove the unit, then plug the unit in.
Be sure when you get ready to plug, got to Finder and disconnect the unit before unplugging.
Either Mac or PC? If it's only your iMac, have you tried rebooting it? On rare occasions my Mac forgets an external device or won't let me delete a file because it is in use and I can't see that it's open. Reboots often cure all sorts of odd behavior.
If neither see the 3490, I would then perform a hard reset on it (this is different from simply switching it off and on). Such a reboot on a nuvi often solves odd things on it just as well.
I second that recommendation. I've seen several USB cables/connectors going bad after being used a bit.
Turn off the 3490 by holding the power key down for at least 4 seconds. Touch Off. Turn it on again. This is to reboot the 3490 rather than have it in sleep mode.
Connect the 3490 directly to a USB port on the iMac and disconnect all other USB equipment. Reboot the computer! Start Garmin Express. (you are using Garmin Express, right?) Update Garmin Express and run it again.
If the 3490 appears on Garmin Express, remove it in software and reboot the computer, so it will be detected again.
If not, download Garmin Communicator from the Garmin site. When running it, see if it detects the 3490. If it does, run Garmin Express again and it should be detected.
