Happy you bought a Garmin?

I will not mention the other (very well known and generally respected) brand - but share the experience. A relative bought another brand - near the top of their range. For a user who has just a little problem finding the on switch on a computer ( wink ) and who has never had a GPS before - soon well out of their depth. question

I have a Nuvi 250W (not exactly the top of the range) and do know my way around a computer, but admit to getting close to out of my depth with it as well. confused

Their manual was inadequate - unhelpful - on problems and you really had to understand the language to find solutions on the website and do a fix.

We tried to buy a needed map. OK - that bit was relatively easy - except there was no warning that a download like that would not work on 250kb link speed - the best they can get where he lives - (no explanation). Only found that after a search for solutions! evil

ADDED

OK OK - It was a TomTom - and I am telling you that because they have refused to help! Go to a friend and try it there! evil

I have posted a request for help on stalled downloads in the TomTom talk.... see what happens next!

Go GARMIN!

What happened next.

Still no real help from TomTom - but the download was tried again and actually worked so at least he has the map - but OH the trouble! Thoroughly convinced me where to stay.....

Using MapSource

Yes, newer maps would be helpful. Can MapSource be used to load a newer map to the Nuvi 200?

I don't know about newer maps, but I have on my 200 the following: City Navigator North America NT 2008 (lower 48 states), and MetroGuide North America v7 (Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii). I'm pretty sure I used MapSource to load the Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii maps (which are on the SD card).

Happy with...

I'm happy with the ease of use and the traffic feature.

Not happy with...

I'm definitely not happy with connectivity issues using the Blue-tooth with my LG phone.

Just got a 205w

Can't believe I waited so long to get one. I needed to get to a few remote locations and I didn't have a map. It was raining hard, and I couldn't see the road signs. Decided to pick one up from a WalMart in a small town. Knew I wanted the Garman from all of the research that I had done. It saved me tons of time, and it's fun.

Changed the voice to British English to see what that was like. Kind of fun to hear the directions with a British accent.

Now I have to learn how to use it - add favorites, POI's etc. Think I may have to buy two more for the other drivers in the house smile

Can't believe I didn't buy one sooner.

Norm

Yes.

I bought my wife and myself Nuvi 275s. They're really great. She like traveling to Europe a lot so to have both North America and Europe on one GPS is great. The other great feature is the ability to switch between auto and walking mode.

STILL KICKIN

Still love my I5. grin

Yes

Extremely happy. That's why I've bought one for each of my family members.

Garmin Rocks!

I finally bought a garmin T760 and love it!

I bought a Tomtom a little over a year ago. While the unit worked ok, the tech support was terrible. They would ask the same questions over and over and not listen to what you said. They would close out trouble tickets as resolved when they were not fixed. They offered to replace my unit but I would have to send it in and be with out a GPS for about six weeks. These are just a few of the problems I had.

I am not a brand loyalist and here is the reason, true brand loyalty refers to consumers sticking with a brand out of feelings of commitment towards that brand. For instance, when one buys a tube of Prudent toothpaste and finds it ok, one will not have to spend any valuable time on looking for other toothpaste brands, because one is already familiar with it. However, for a more brand-loyalty-sensitive product class like beer, the probability that a consumer will stick to one brand (like Grolsch Beer) is much higher. This paper explains the consumer behavior for the brand loyalty development and its birth in consumer's mind.

Absolutely!

Absolutely! This 265T is my first GPS. It was a gift for my wife. I didn't think I would have any use for it since I generally know where I am going.

I have to say I was wrong. It sure makes driving at night much easier. I was in Prescott last weekend and I ran it in "View Map" mode. I liked knowing where my next turn was. No more squinting at the next street sign ahead, not being able to slow down in time and having to turn around.

Last week my wife was certain that the Garmin was taking her the wrong way toward Mexico. I had her hit the top bar to get the text directions. All was good. Garmin - 1 and wife - 0.

Don't buy top models from Garmin....

As I read positive postings about Garmin I agree, as far as it apply for past and basic models of nuvis for example 2xx.

But byuing top model for example 7x5, is dissapointing experience and huge waste of money, you basically pay extra for becoming Garmin's beta tester, and you must be ready to spend plenty of time to chat with technical support. These nuvis are unfinished product for premium price on market.

Sorry to be so negative, about such a neat gadget, but that's my own experience with top model of nuvi.

maybe I've been one of the lucky ones so far, but I purchased a 765T in Dec, and so far have been very happy with it. No issues yet. Have kept up to date with all the software updates, other than the 2010 map, and even tried the msn receiver this past weekend with no issues. So, in short, as of today, yes I am happy and would recommend buying them.

I bought...

a Garmin, and never looked back...then 3 more! I could not do without mine...

"Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight, make me a child again, just for tonight."

My first GPS was Magellane

My first GPS was Magellane 1200. I liked it very much. However, I could not update the map. After one year using, the magellane 1200 was often losing signal. Then, I changed to Garmin nuvi 205. I bought 2 years warranty for my GPS. So I got new Garmin without paying a cent. I like Garmin 205 because I can update the map for it. However, after updated to NT 2010.10, I deleted the new update and reinstalled the old version 2009.11. The NT 2010.10 have new maps, however, it still has not my location yet.

Otherwise, I still like nuvi 205 than Magellane because the suck cup and charge hole are better and more convenient than Magellane 1200.

Happy Happy Joy Joy

I'm happy with my Garmin. I've had it for about 3 months and love it. I've had a question or two and customer support got back to me the next day. No problems with the unit itself. Lots of features and easy to use software. I'd recommend it.

TomTom built in and Garmin Nuvi 1490T. Eastern Iowa, formerly Southern California "You can check out any time you like...but you can never leave."

GPS Mixed family

We've got a Nuvi 750, two TomTom One v3, and a Garmin 76s (marine)

Feature and operational reliablitily:
The 76s is excellent smile
TomToms - excellent smile
Nuvi 750 - mostly good smile

Nuvi 750 issues
replaced once under warranty - MP3 plug got bent by the included ear buds
It stutters even after numerous updates sad

Maps (2008, 2009) are years out of date
the Trans Canada highway for example
- imagine hours of Re-calculating, Off Road, make a U Turn while cruising a controlled access highway at 110 km/h .. :~

Often slow announce directions sad

I chose this unit after looking at the 200 series, as it has logging

TomTom's are easy to update the maps (road by road) by their map share or by the integrated map fix utility

Customer Service
Garmin CS is great smile
TomTom's is poor example of a call centre sad

Biggest Nuvi Complaint
compared to the historic line of Garmins units, the Nuvis do not have many configurable display options

New software items are brought out in new sub models like the xx5 units (Eco route, speed on screen, lane assist)

We should be able to display current speed and upcomming highway items (rest stops, etc)

Documentation on the units - slim
these things are so f'n proprietary ..

continue to command premium prices

However, I thing my 750 is great smile

Just got a Nuvi 260W

laugh out loud My Nuvi 260w is my first portable GPS. I have a Honda Pilot with Nav and have been very satisfied, but there is no easy way that I have found to add POI's. My wife and I are taking a month long trip in a rental car and wanted to have a navigation system. We bought the Nuvi 260w at Costco for a good price and are very happy. Garmin came highly recommended from a good friend and my brother who both have Garmin 3x0s and have been very happy.
I have been using my Nuvi for a couple weeks to get used to it. When registering my new gps I discovered this site. I really like being able to download the POIs. I have Diners, drive-ins and dives and the costco POIs, both very important on long driving trips.

The Other Brand

A friend just got a new TomTom. I was pretty impressed with all his features for a lot less money. I'm happy with my Garmin 755T, but I do believe TomTom will overtake Garmin soon.

I believe he can update his POIs on his own whereas I have to buy the lifetime map updates to get this feature. So, meanwhile, I'm stuck with 147 Quisno's that went out of business on my Garmin as an example and listed by mileage so hard to skip.

So far happy with mine.

So far happy with mine.

Bought 2

Bought mine last weekend, got one for DW this weekend for mothers day.

Love the ease of use

While others may have more sophisticated needs, I like the ease of use and simplicity of my 200W. The primary need--navigation--is straightforward. The ease of adding a POI via coordinates, is also welcomed, as I go to a lot of military bases, which may have buildings without addresses associated with them.

Was There Really Life Before My Garmin???

I've tried TomTom and Magellan. Both had things I liked. However, my Garmin was, IMHO the best bang for the buck. Easiest to use out of the box and very intuitive. Loved it so much, had to make sure my Mom got one. Yeppers...I'm totally happy to have my Garmin! mrgreen

Very Happy With Garmin

After doing extensive research, I purchased a Nuvi 765T last November (great Black Friday deal at Amazon). Aside from one problem with it shutting off when announcing POIs, (which was fixed with a Firmware update) I never have had a problem with it. I liked it so much I bought my Daugher a 265WT which she really likes and has not had any problems with either.

Good Luck!

SATS view

kennethammar wrote:

I'm happy but, how do I get the nuvi 200 to show the sats I am connecting to?

Try this, on the main screen (Where To? and Show Map) hold your finger on the SAT signal strength meter in the upper left of the screen for 4-5 seconds.

Narrative Guide vs. Map

I am admittedly a novice Garmin user. I have a Nuvi 660. It's a wonderful unit; however, I have noticed that occasionally the narrative guide at the top of the screen sometimes does not provide the same information as the arrow guide in the map. For example, yesterday I was traveling from the San Bernardino mountains to Orange County (in CA). At one freeway transition point, the narrative guide said "Continue south on 215 fwy," while the purple guide arrow on the map directed me to "take the 91 freeway." The arrow was correct, the narrative was not. Fortunately, I knew generally where I was going, but this can be a problem for someone who truly doesn't know the area they are traveling in.

Love my Garmin(s)

Never had a regret with my Garmins. They all work great... easy to use... and yes, the support is outstanding!!! Good luck and enjoy... these are great devices.

Roads with more than one designation are a problem

Acoldbeer wrote:

I have noticed this myself with roads that have more than one name. I seem to see this most often with county roads in my area. The map display will show "CR-15" but the green bar may show the street name "smith road" instead of it's County Route designation. The spoken navigation prompt will usually - but not always - refer to "smith road". It can be confusing to hear the Nuvi say "turn right at smith road" and then look at the map and it shows the turn arrow at CR-15. My 750 and 350 are not 100% consistent in how they handle this at the same intersection. The 350 now ALWAYS refers to this same road as CR-15, both on the map and in spoken navigation. The 750 shows CR-15 on the map but speaks the name as Smith Road.

This behavior started with the 2009 map update, so it has something to do with how the road names are encoded in the map vs how my Nuvi's display and speak that data. This affects MapSource as well. Looking at the same road and it will be labelled CR-15 in MapSource. If I hover my mouse over it, the popup will say Smith Road. Hard to say who is at fault with this - is it the underlying Navteq map, or how Garmin has encoded the data into their map file?

Happy overall

My first GPS (Garmin 255w) and it does what I expected it to do.

And now I don't get lost anymore !!!
