I put them up because there are only the 5 bbq's dont know what the number is for a chain or not a chain. if more than 1 then thats ok also. no biggie. if Go fish dont want them then he dont have to enter them.

In my opinion a chain are multiple restaurants owned by the same person or group and found in multiple cities.

If there are a bunch of them in the same city I don't consider them to be a chain.

I agree with flaco's definition. I guess it's up to the POI owner to decide though. I think the point of the POI is to find good BBQ in unique dining settings.

Does anyone know if Big Bob Gibson's in Decater AL made the list yet? I think I have coordiantes somewhere on my etrex vista/Mapsource. They've got two locations, but I definitely wouldn't call them a chain.

Featured in Mike Mill's book Peace, Love and Barbeque . . . stopped on the way to FL but too late . . . 7 p.m.!! They open for lunch and close when it's gone! had to stop on the way back through to experience it.

They have a champinship caliber team headed by Chris Lilly(sp?)and trophies are on display. Worth the side trip!

Bought a few bottles of sauce for gifts. They have a website . . just google.

AL has a lot of BBQ - Dreamland, Country's, and Jim& Nick's are all good too, but they (J&N) have locations in neighboring states but less than 5 total.

Help. My wife and I are going to San Francisco and only renting a car for a day trip north. No problem finding seafood restaurants, but BBQ rib places near down town seem scarce. None listed north to Petaluma either. Has anyone any helpful information for a rib person?
With this list and the rest area one I would be good for months.

A good place to stop if you're on you're way to the Outer Banks.

Ok, you have Buster's listed, but not Reo's Ribs. You can smell the smoker from a mile away, and they have (besides BBQ) fried catfish, hush puppies, and sweet tea.

When I lived in Dallas back in the late 80's, this was the BEST place to go. What can you say about a place that chains its utensils to the tables? GREAT Texas Bar-B-Que and ambiance too!

As for the chains-I looked in the North America Official Rules & Regulations for Chains & they stated that a business is only considered to be a chain if it exceeds a certain # & is located in different states. Tho the rules may have changed as I have the 2006 edition. If I find out different I will delete those entries. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Though some would disagree, the Bay Area has never really been known for great BBQ.

One place that I've always liked, and has generally been well regarded, is Flint's. Flint's has closed and reopened several times through the years, due to fires and other problems unrelated to Flint's quality or popularity. They're open again at two locations in Oakland. From what I understand, the actual smoking is done only at the Bancroft Avenue location, and not at the original Shattuck Avenue location. While not near downtown SF, Flint's is definitely worth the trip across the bay.

Nearer to downtown SF is Big Nate's Barbeque, owned by former NBA great, Nate Thurmond. Big Nate's is pretty good (especially by Bay Area standards), though I prefer Flint's.

I haven't been back to Michigan eating BBQ in a while so I don't know who's still around. My old favorites closed down and those that I'm sure are there are actual chains. I'll do some searching and see if I can locate any that I'd like to recommend.

There are a coulple that I would recomend in my area. The first is in my Hometown of LaGrange,Ga. It is Hog Heaven on West Point Road(not sure of street number). The other two are in Alabama, one in Auburn, it is called Price's Barbeque houseon 345 S College St. The final one is in Montgomery and it is called Jim N Nick's it is on 6415 Atlanta Hwy. It might be a chain resturant, I am not sure.

I suggested Grinder Hut in Norco, CA. Something is amiss there now. They are only open three days a week now and the food tasted like chopped meat with BBQ sauce...that's it. No more smoky flavor. It's just not the same anymore. No one was there but employees...to me that says a lot about the food at a restaurant. Too bad, now there's no good BBQ in the area.

Worth the trip. They hold the record for Memphis in May Championships and Mike Mills is legendary in BBQ circles. Every third weekend in September they hold a competition adjacent to the restaurant that draws teams from around the country. Beer, music and BBQ. Great fun. BTW, they use a vinegar based sauce for those of you who like to debate vinegar vs. tomato.
