When we lived in Evergreen, CO, we used to visit this place on occasion. It was fresh made the night before and allowed to slow cook all night. The next day it was served up. Once it was gone though, it was gone.

For anyone who has heard of or tried Lexington-style barbecue should try the two restaurants below. Locals love their barbecue (there's 20 BBQ restaurants for about 17,000 people). If you're making the trip to central NC, try going during one of the last two Saturdays in October, when Lexington has their free Barbecue Festival (this year it's on 10/25/08) to try barbecue from every bBQ joint in town. Wayne Monk opened it in 1966 and still has curbside service if you want it! His brother opened a barbecue stand and it became known as Lexington Barbecue #2. After he sold out, Wayne dropped the #1, but it still stuck with the locals. Locally, it’s also known as the HoneyMonk or just as the Monk. Wayne was invited to serve barbecue to Reagan in the White House and Bill Clinton (of course)stops there every time he goes near the area.

Growing up near the Monk, I smelled the pig slow-cooking every day of my youth and the smell can still make my stomach growl. Every time I go back, I have to get some BBQ from the Monk. That’s good eatin’!

This one is out in the middle of nowhere, and I challenge you to find a better steak, and they have a favorite and original to me. Battered and fried huge lobster tails with a dipping sauce. There on a stick as appitizers, and you get 3, that alone would fill most people up.

Rudy's is great BBQ, but they have about 25 locations (including franchises), so I think it may be considered a "chain" restaurant and not eligible to be included in this file.

However, since you've now got me in the mood for Rudy's, I'll get the coordinates for all their locations and create a separate Rudy's POI file.

Could you post this as a gpx file as well? Alternatively comma separate the fields in the csv file so that the resulting file has columns something like: lat, long, name, addr, city, state, country, post, phone, notes?

If it is in that csv format, gpsbabel (www.gpsbabel.org) a freely available program can convert to a gpx file, and nuvi, for example, can read and use the phone field to call diretly, as well as other useful things.

OK, by popular demand, I have geocoded all the locations in Texas Monthly's June 2008 list of the Top 50 Texas Barbecue Joints.

Let it not be said I'm not an enterprising soul.

I know this goes a bit beyond GoFish's scope for this project, since I can't personally recommend all 50 locations. Not disparaging any of them, just haven't been to all of them.

I made a csv file which will work for a Garmin StreetPilot, and an Excel spreadsheet with all of the info for those who may want to rearrange the data for other platforms. What should I do with these files? Not quite sure if I can (or should) upload them in this topic.

I can personally vouch for (and highly recommend) all of these except the #1 choice, Snow's BBQ, where I've never been. Will have to remedy that ASAP.

Just a note, though: when I used Garmin's POI Loader to load this one, I got a message saying that there's a "Format data error line 109" that makes it unloadable.

I lack the wisdom to know what that means, but I'm betting someone else does.

Line 109 and line 112 (in the current version) are explanatory notes. Since these lines don't start with longitude/latitude coordinates, POI loader doesn't know what to do with them. These lines don't need to be loaded, and all of the POIs should still be loaded and available in your custom list. They just give information about some of the locations listed.

Looks like your coordinates are a bit off, at least according to Google Maps. Other sources state that 751 B's Barbecue Road is near the intersection of West 5th Street (the 2800 block) and B's Barbecue Road. Per Google Maps, the coordinates would be:
