Rest Stop Pois

Here are two questions for which I seek answers:

1. Are the food and fuel stops along a turnpike or thruway contained in the Rest Stop Poi? I ask this because of the following experiences: (a) when I drove on the PA Turnpike, my rest stop poi did not alert me to the food and fuel areas; (b) when I drove along an interstate in PA (not a turpike or thruway) where rest stops do not have fuel and eating facilities I heard the alert sounds from the Poi file.

2. Can I espect the Rest Stop poi automatically to beep its alert as I drive on a road whose rest stops are listed in the rest stop file that is in my POI folder?

Thanks for response.

To set alerts for reststops see this:

edit:
Unless you set the alerts manually you will not be alerted...

Rest stops are not gas stations or restaurants...

To set alerts for reststops see this:

In a number of states they are now using gas stations and other business as a rest stop and closing some of the other ones on the interstate. If the coord is set for the off ramp then you will get an alert if you have loaded them with alerts. Most of the gas station along the interstate are set wiht coord at the business locaton and so unless they are right on the interstate you won't get an alert untill you get off and approach the business.

What Rest Area POI File ?

What Rest Area POI File are you using?? In the "Rest Areas Combined" file there are a significant number of Service Plazas listed which have rest area facilities PLUS a gas station and a Hot Food shop of some sort.

Many of these are in the median strip between highway directions and are notated "Service Plaza-Left Exit"

If you find any that are missing please e-mail me the info so I can include them.
Update: If you send me info, please include State, Highway number, and Mile Marker OR best of all, send me the coordinates.

Drove from Charleston SC to

Drove from Charleston SC to PAX River MD, and the rest areas sounded off correctly for every one we passed. Don't know if the big ones that are in the center of the freeways or just off the freeeway work due to none being along the route I took. Sure would like to know from others.
My alerts are set to 5K feet for these.

Closed Rest Areas

I went to Shreveport, Louisiana this week, and on the way,on I-20, there was a rest area closed in Texas, and the Welcome Center just over the border in Louisiana was closed. Sometimes it doesn't help to know where the rest areas are, if when you get there they are not open. The bad thing was, there were no rest areas between the two that were closed, so that was a long time between open areas. Luckily, there were truck stops along the way!

If you know of Rest Areas

If you know of Rest Areas that are "permanently" closed please inform the writer via e-mail of the locations. State, Highway #, MM
Areas that are closed for routine maintenance are very hard to keep track of.
In Tx the last Rest Area EB on I-20 is at MM608 and it is listed as open, there is a Turnout (no facilities) at MM636 and then the Welcome Center at MM3 in LA is listed as Open on the LA DOT Rest Area site.
Best we can do without good user inputs.
This is,of course, for the Rest Areas Combined file.
There have been changes to TX & LA I-20 Rest Area info in the last 2-3 updates to the file so if you don't update regularly there could be some errors.

Which Rest area file are you using ???????

You are probably right since the "original" intent of the Rest Areas Combined file was to compile all the "Interstate" Rest areas. I have been slowly adding US Highways, State Rd. and County Rest Areas as users send them to me.
Just need State, Highway # (ex: US-23), Mile Marker but coordinates is the easiest on me to finish the research to get all the facilities listed and to insure the coordinates are set to get the proximity alerts to sound accurately.
Please send via e-mail.

Oops. Did not realize it was originally for interstates. I will send you coordinates after I leave the OC.......

Newbie Combined Rest Areas Question

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 660. I loaded the Combined Rest Areas POI file from this site but for some reason I can only see 52 of the rest areas on my device. How come I can't browse through all of them? There are 1907 entries in that CSV. Does it only show ones nearby to me or something? I seem to have this limitation on any POI I load from here. For example, I can only browse through 52 of the Walmarts even though there were much more then that in the POI I loaded. I am using the Garmin POI loader and it seems to load them all based on the count it gives me. I just can't see them. Help or suggestions?

-Kevin

combined rest area file

It has now been a year after I submitted a combined file with corrections and some standardization to the poi-factory. I was run out of town on a rail just for mentioning there was a need for it. Keep up the good work. I found many mistakes when I reviewed the initial combined file. I know you had your work cut out for you. Thanks

I suggest you read

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5001 and many more threads relative to Rest Area files over the past year.
