Thanks.

Once again DorkusNimrod, you are "Johnny-on-the-spot" with your Garmin update notices. It appears that the rumors about no NA updates until January were incorrect. I think I'll wait a few days to see if any problems are reported. I recall the broken Junction View a couple of releases ago and hope there are no problems like that in this version.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Uh oh... Trouble

Just downloaded it.... and it's requiring I update my 780 to the latest firmware. Sheesh, I don't want to! Any ideas for a workaround?

Larry

MapSource

Let us know if it updates the version of MapSource on your PC. The 2010.20 map updated MapSource to ver. 6.15.6.

In the Garmin folder on the unit is a file called "GarminDevice.xml". I opened that file in Notepad, on one line is:

I knew I read about this somewhere, but in the time it took me to search the topics, it sounds like you found it. The topic I found is here:

EDIT: are you going to change it back to 420 after installing the maps so that it displays the correct version number?

Seems things are improving...

Registered a new unit today - map update appeared immediately for the unit. Much improved process - don't have to call customer service anymore.

oops....

Updating maps while posting-ended up with double post.

Looks like it is locked but included with the update, like on 2010.2.

nuMaps Lifetime update for N-A

Updated my Garmin nuvi680 without a problem but it take around 2 hours for the download and the installation.

I'll leave it 'thinking' its at 4.90

Gary A wrote:

It's actually at 4.80, the 420 was an example from the cut-n-paste I did.

To answer your question, I will leave it at 490... The way my mind works, I'll forget the solution during the next map update smile

Larry

GarminDevice.xml gets overwritten on every power-cycle...

Just so you know, GarminDevice.xml gets rewritten/repopulated according to what firmware version is on the unit at every power cycle. Even though you may change it to bypass the firmware update when registering the unit or updating maps, the next nuvi power cycle will overwrite the file. The change you make is only temporary.

Wow, these updates are slooooowwwww!

Everything went smooth on the new lifetime map upgrade

Everything went smooth on the new lifetime map upgrade, took about 45 min to download and about 10 min for the install.

Less than an hour total from logging on to Garmin site to map install into my 885t completed. Love the USB 2.0 on the 885t, so much faster than my old 760.

Large

donbadabon wrote:

The file is very large (over 2GB) so the download time is totally dependent on the speed of your internet connection.

After that, it takes about 7 minutes just to extract the compressed files when you execute the file.

Finally, loading the map file onto your Garmin will vary depending whether it has a USB 2.0 or a USB 1.1 interface. My older 660 has the slower USB 1.1 interface and will take between 1-1/2 and 2 hours to upload the map file.

All total, it could take 3 hours or more, start to finish.

Thanks for the heads up

I looked over the details online around my area and did not find a number of roads updated. Will wait for the next iteration and check again.

I updates 3 units and all

I updated 3 units and all went well. It only took about 30 min to download..i'm running at about 12 mbps, so its pretty quick. Then about another 20 minutes to install. I used two compuer to dl two at a time, so it went very fast.

Maybe this map update contains more revisions than additions.

Whew, what a day.

The download worked fine but at about 60% completion of map transfer to my GPS, a power failure hit 1300 homes in town:

http://azdailysun.com/articles/2009/11/20/news/breaking/doc4...

Thank goodness for UPS which kept the PC running the next 20 minutes ot so to finish the transfer to my nuvi.

At the start of the installation, I saw something which I think is new and should be welcomed by many folks--the installation gives you the option of a recommended installation (to PC and GPS in the usual locations), a 2nd option of a custom install (I didn't try it but this may let you selectively install to just the GPS or computer and maybe to choose a drive or location with more room than your c drive) and finally a 3rd option of GPS installation only (no PC map install).

Did I miss this before or is this new?

2010.30 is 6.15.7

This is new with the downloadable map updates and is very welcomed. It was a very sore point with me (and others also) that on previous map update versions, Garmin insisted on dumping *everything* on the C: drive...file extraction, temporary map storage, final map installation/storage, MapSource installation, etc.

Seems they've finally realized that not everybody on the planet has 10+ GB of space on their C: drive just to install a ~1.6 GB map update to the GPS. Some have small C:'s by strategic partitioning (personal choice, like myself) and others simply have small C:'s due to everything installing everything there.

Regardless of the reason, this made for big problems for many people (myself included) who've had to resort to hacks (pre-decompressing to another drive and installing from there, plus other numerous things) to even get the thing to install.

I would like to say Thank you, Garmin for finally addressing this issue.
