Google and Mapquest have teamed up with Garmin to allow users to import routes and locations that they find on their respective services onto their Garmin GPS. This obviously requires a usb connection of sorts, but should be available on google starting tomorrow.
Thanks for the good laugh johnm405
.I have done that many times trying to figure where it went. That was most likely the sample I posted.
Charlie, Your welcome if I remember right it was your's What was athe place you gave as a sample. Could it be because it is more than 50 miles away from me that it won"t show up?
Anyone know if this feature would work on a Garmin M3 PDA/GPS? Looks interesting!
I was playing around and downloaded several pizza places using Google Map and then GMapToGPX.
It was a location in New Port Richey Florida. The address was for a Walmart I knew.It should have showed up in favorites.
Charlie, just looked in favorites and nothing there. Thanks for the help will look more tomorow.
You download and install the plug-in to your computer, but you GPS unit needs to be connected so that the communication can be tested.
MM - Once again you solved one of my problems, I couldn't figure out why the test always failed. Dah, I didn't have my nuvi plugged into the computer. I think it is called a "senior moment"
How do you get a picture like your to load and move like that???
Been there, done that. Join the club...!!!
Went to the Garmin website, downloaded and installed the ActiveX control. Tried a sample waypoint from Google. Downloaded great, added it to my favorites.
This will come in very handy for those times when the POI is not in Mapsource.
Looks like Google Earth Plus ($20 per year, not the free one) also has a GPS feature? Is this new, anybody try/have it?
Added the Garmin Communicator plug-in just fine. No problem sending to my garmin 760, but what is involved getting my favorites to show up on the google map site??? Thanks
I have Google Earth Plus but, unfortunately, it doesn't recognize my Nüvi 670...
I looked up your unit and it does take waypoints. You have to download the plug in to your computer to work with Garmin maps.See http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ also read the faq's on the site. I tried to find something to give some more information but no luck so far.Hopefully another member will jump in that may have some info you need.
Is there a way to set a proximity alert to these Google way points?
Not while they're loaded as Favourites. But they can be read from the unit, edited and re-loaded as Custom POIs, which of course, can have Proximity Alert information.
right, but so far, for me, the numbered addresses that I can't find with my Nuvi 360, I can't find with GoogleMaps, it is almost useless for me. Of course, I may not know how to use it properly. Great idea though!
Ok I have downloaded a address from google maps to my 660 and everything went great until I go to the unit and look for the information. I the the cyber thiefs stoled it from me on the way to my 660. Anybody know where it went.
So it isnt in your favorites?
No it isn't Ilooked and even attached the gps and looked that way. not even on the card.
I tried this tonight with my Garmin StreetPilot 2730. It worked fine with Google Maps, but I can't seem to get it to work with Mapquest. Also, it seems to have changed the name of Favorites categories from the customizes names that I had to Category 1-16.
Mapquest according to other posts it will not be on until mid April.
John.Did it fall out of the Gps and roll under the computer table?
I played with this a little bit more on the Garmin StreetPilot 2730. When I saved everything in the unit back to MapSource, my custom Favorite names were still there. When I sent it back to the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 they showed up as they should with the custom names. As soon as I added an additional "new" Favorite downloaded through the Google Maps it switched the Favorites back to Catetgory 1-16. Also, the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 displays the name on Line 1, Line 2 shows the North coordinate, and Line 3 shows the West coordinate. I can see where this would be very helpful on the units that allow the telephone numbers to be stored. It is a probably little less helpful to those of us with the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 and other similar units. I actually wouldn't mind seeing this expanded somewhat so that it would give you a choice of downloading this to Favorite or Extras/Custom POIs.
Charlie, I think the gps gremlins are eating it or ET is using it to get back home. I have not Ideal where it is going it just tells me it was saved to the nuvi and then it's gone. (And I don't drink andymore or less)
great!! what about c580??????????
when will this google feature be avaliable .
If this works properly it would be a very wonderful thing for all
Glenn, the feature is currently available for Google.
For those who are having trouble finding the information on their GPS unit, on my Zumo (and other units will be different), I have to import the locations from my user data area before they show up under my Favorites list. Some models may have the same situation.
For those asking if this will work with their GPS units, the best way to find out is to try it. But it should work for all units that show up to the computer as a USB Mass Storage Device.
What is a User Data Area?
On the nuvi 350, showed up in favs as expected.
Here are some screenshots. Not all models have this.
Great, thinks for the screenshots. Yeah, the nuvi and my c530 didn't have it.
So, on the third shot, it looks like you can import data to different place within the garmin. Such as favs. But I saw routes, can the zumo import routes?
The Zumo stores up to 50 routes.
When you send them from MapSource, they end up in the temp.GPX file and must be imported before they show up on the Where to? > Routes screen.
Also, if you copy a GPX file that has a route (or routes) in it, the route(s) will show up on that list to be imported.
wow, I thought only 7xx and up can do routes. Didn't realize that the zumo could.
After watching a demo video of someone sending google map directions to their BMW and now this, I really wonder where google is going next
I wonder how the waypoint gets to the nav system.
It's cell phone based.
Ok I quit I tried again today to send a waypoint from google maps to my 660 everything went great found gps and all even said save complete. Still nothing showing in favorites. I'll just do it the old way and be happy.
I'm sorry that you are having trouble.
Try a couple more things.
1. Try searching your Favorites by spelling the name of one of the locations you sent from Google and see if it maybe comes up that way.
2. Connect your GPS unit to your computer and look in the GPX folder and see if there are any files there that correspond with the waypoints sent from Google.
How many favorites do you now have showing on your gps?Just to try something different put in a new address on Google that is right down the road from you and save it as a favorite and see if it shows up.
MM I looked in the gpx file and nothing there, I also tried typing in the favorite and nothing.
Charlie, the waypoint I sent to me is less than 15 miles away. I just remembered that I uses the address button in google maps and going to try the business button and see if that is the problem.thanks both of you for the ideals.
I just used the standard address search.
Here's what mine looks like on the Google screens.
And here's what the GPX folder on my Zumo looks like.
MM that is exactly what my screen looks like. and after sending to gps it shows it found the nuvi and then say's save completed click here to return. I just done a target store 7 miles from me and used the business taab and it came through to my favorites. could have been the way I was typing in the address or something oh well who knows with modern tech stuff. Thank you for all your help.
Glad you don't have to look for it anymore.
is a video on the Garmin site with some info.
Thanks for all the info on this topic. Too bad my GPS is at work until Monday but I'll give it a shot then.
I had a 530, which is basically the samething and it cant do routes.
With this new feature of Map Quest and Google maps does anyone know how many favorites you can have on a Nuvi 360 at one time before it's full... Thanks
