Send Google Maps and Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

Google and Mapquest have teamed up with Garmin to allow users to import routes and locations that they find on their respective services onto their Garmin GPS. This obviously requires a usb connection of sorts, but should be available on google starting tomorrow.

waypoints works great

Went to the Garmin website, downloaded and installed the ActiveX control. Tried a sample waypoint from Google. Downloaded great, added it to my favorites.

This will come in very handy for those times when the POI is not in Mapsource.

I looked up your unit and it does take waypoints. You have to download the plug in to your computer to work with Garmin maps.See http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ also read the faq's on the site. I tried to find something to give some more information but no luck so far.Hopefully another member will jump in that may have some info you need.

Google Waypoint alert

Is there a way to set a proximity alert to these Google way points?

Convert to Custom POI

risurfdog wrote:

Not while they're loaded as Favourites. But they can be read from the unit, edited and re-loaded as Custom POIs, which of course, can have Proximity Alert information.

Send Google Maps & Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

I tried this tonight with my Garmin StreetPilot 2730. It worked fine with Google Maps, but I can't seem to get it to work with Mapquest. Also, it seems to have changed the name of Favorites categories from the customizes names that I had to Category 1-16.

Mapquest according to other

Mapquest according to other posts it will not be on until mid April.

Send Google Maps & Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

I played with this a little bit more on the Garmin StreetPilot 2730. When I saved everything in the unit back to MapSource, my custom Favorite names were still there. When I sent it back to the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 they showed up as they should with the custom names. As soon as I added an additional "new" Favorite downloaded through the Google Maps it switched the Favorites back to Catetgory 1-16. Also, the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 displays the name on Line 1, Line 2 shows the North coordinate, and Line 3 shows the West coordinate. I can see where this would be very helpful on the units that allow the telephone numbers to be stored. It is a probably little less helpful to those of us with the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 and other similar units. I actually wouldn't mind seeing this expanded somewhat so that it would give you a choice of downloading this to Favorite or Extras/Custom POIs.

Looking for Address

Charlie, I think the gps gremlins are eating it or ET is using it to get back home. I have not Ideal where it is going it just tells me it was saved to the nuvi and then it's gone. (And I don't drink andymore or less)

when will this google

when will this google feature be avaliable .

Nice

If this works properly it would be a very wonderful thing for all

Glenn, the feature is currently available for Google.

For those who are having trouble finding the information on their GPS unit, on my Zumo (and other units will be different), I have to import the locations from my user data area before they show up under my Favorites list. Some models may have the same situation.

For those asking if this will work with their GPS units, the best way to find out is to try it. But it should work for all units that show up to the computer as a USB Mass Storage Device.

User Data Area

What is a User Data Area?

On the nuvi 350, showed up in favs as expected.

Great, thinks for the screenshots. Yeah, the nuvi and my c530 didn't have it.

So, on the third shot, it looks like you can import data to different place within the garmin. Such as favs. But I saw routes, can the zumo import routes?

--
Charley - Nuvi 350 - Bel STI Driver - Cobra 29 w/ wilson 1000 - AIM: asianfire -

.

The Zumo stores up to 50 routes.

When you send them from MapSource, they end up in the temp.GPX file and must be imported before they show up on the Where to? > Routes screen.

Also, if you copy a GPX file that has a route (or routes) in it, the route(s) will show up on that list to be imported.

wow, I thought only 7xx and

wow, I thought only 7xx and up can do routes. Didn't realize that the zumo could.

Send Google maps to garmin gps

Ok I quit I tried again today to send a waypoint from google maps to my 660 everything went great found gps and all even said save complete. Still nothing showing in favorites. I'll just do it the old way and be happy.

--
johnm405 660 & MSS&T

.

I'm sorry that you are having trouble.

Try a couple more things.

1. Try searching your Favorites by spelling the name of one of the locations you sent from Google and see if it maybe comes up that way.

2. Connect your GPS unit to your computer and look in the GPX folder and see if there are any files there that correspond with the waypoints sent from Google.

Still looking

John
How many favorites do you now have showing on your gps?Just to try something different put in a new address on Google that is right down the road from you and save it as a favorite and see if it shows up.

Charlie, the waypoint I sent to me is less than 15 miles away. I just remembered that I uses the address button in google maps and going to try the business button and see if that is the problem.thanks both of you for the ideals.
