Send Google Maps and Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

Google and Mapquest have teamed up with Garmin to allow users to import routes and locations that they find on their respective services onto their Garmin GPS. This obviously requires a usb connection of sorts, but should be available on google starting tomorrow.

I haven't done it, but I understand it can be done as a two step process if you have Mapsource. Just remember that when you work on Favorites in Mapsource and transfer them back, it adds to the existing file on the unit. Sooo, you must do a hard reset to wipe out the existing Favorites file before transferring back. This will require resetting all your preferences -- so you have to weigh the plusses and minuses to see if it is worth it. I view it as a way to recover from a big mistake loading to Favorites, but not as a regular way to edit them.

This not true on all NUVIs. on the 750 you can go to the MY DATA page and there you can delete "All Favorites" or just the ones you mark.

That is a very nice feature. It makes the Mapsource editing capability a much more interesting option.

Found It

You may need the plug-in loaded to see it, though.

Thanks Glenn, I found it and the transfer did work for a business I sent to my 660. Much appreciated smile

johnm405, I did not see an option to save to an sd card; the transfer went straight to my GPSr and I found the business under "my favourites." I haven't played around with this too much so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen any other options.

Card

johnm405, I just remember that I do not have my sd card in my 660. I've had problems transferring POIs from my card to my device. Don't know if the absence of a card would take away the option of saving to a card? Anybody else finding this additional option?

My method for getting the coordinates is to zoom in all the way, center my spot in the window and hit the link button that is right next to the SEND button. The coordinates will be obvious in the popup window.

Didn't see any choice where send files. The files were saved on my c550 as gpx files. I ceated a gpx folder on my card under garmin (garmin/gpx). I then moved the files from the unit to the card. When I restarted the unit with the card in I chose not to add the data to the garmin and had access to the new favorites strictly from the card.
Hope this is of some help.

Worked for me, downloaded

Worked for me, downloaded the plugin from Garmin, ran the test page, all OK. Went to Google maps, typed in an address, hit the send to tab and there was the e mail or GPS tab ,picked GPS, then Garmin, the plugin jumped in and did the rest. Put the new POI in my favorite's folder on the unit (Nuvi 260 )
Great find, well done guys, love this board.

Garmin communicator plugin

Thanks for the confo, bpaine. I seem to be the only one having a problem installing the plugin. So I'm going to ask a r-e-a-l-l-y basic question: do you download the plugin to your GPS unit or to your computer or both? When I tried to install the plugin, my GPSr wasn't connected. Is that my problem?

TIA.

You download and install the plug-in to your computer, but you GPS unit needs to be connected so that the communication can be tested.

Didn't detect mine either but it worked. Have you tried going to google maps and seeing if it works. Mine works fine even though it shouldn't.

googlemaps and routes

No. I get the same thing. The mapquest version is supposed to allow route transfer. (See http://wireless.mapquest.com/send-gps.html) However, this feature is "coming soon".

Google Maps doesn't

Google Maps doesn't (currently) have the ability to download ALL search results to the GPS. Someone was asking for that, and it WOULD be a nice feature. In the meantime, there is a work-around if you have a Google account and understand how to use MyMaps.

1) enter your search criteria, ie "pizza austin"
2) click on each result, and choose the "Save to My Maps" option (create a new map if needed)
3) continue step 2 until all POI's are added to your custom map
4) Go to My Maps and check your custom map, which should enable the "View in Google Earth" link above the map
5) right-click on the "View" link, and choose "Copy Shortcut"
6) in the browsers address bar (maybe best in another window) paste the link from step 5
7) In the address, change the "output=nl" to "output=kml" and press enter
8) Save the KML file on your system
9) Use the POIConverter at http://dr5274.googlepages.com/POIConverter to convert the KML to CSV
10) Download the CSV to your unit

(these steps sound good but have not been completely verified...your mileage may vary...call now, operators are standing by...offer void where prohibited)

Send Google Maps & Mapquest Maps Directly to your Garmin GPS

I saw this last night and downloaded the plug-in, but I really haven't had a chance to play with it yet. When I first read about it I thought it was neat, but then I thought we can already do this with MapSource, so what is the big advantage. As I see it, this might be a time saver. For example, I would probably be using the computer on the internet anyway to find addresses and then I would have to enter them into MapSource to get them set up as Favorites. Or I can still do it directly on the GPS by hand. I do typically use my GPS for work and I have a laptop computer in the car with internet through an EVDO card, but our IT folks probably won't allow me to add the software to the work computer. It will be interesting to see how popular this feature becomes. I think the biggest shortcoming of GPS right now is maintaining current information. Does anybody know if Google or Mapquest has more up to date maps than the latest MapSource software? Also, say I have an address for a home that was built on a street that is not in MapSource yet, but Google or Mapquest does have it. Will this allow my Garmin StreetPilot 2730 to route to it even though MapSource doesn't show the new roads yet? I guess what I am asking is will new roads found on Google or Mapquest be "routable" even if they aren't in MapSource yet?

I went to look at a house for sale earlier today at 8683 ALVARADO CT INVER GROVE HEIGHTS MN 55077. The county property records web page shows the coordinates to be 44.82517 -93.086103. I went to http://boulter.com/gps/ and entered the coordinates because it will allow me to look at maps from many different sources. Neither Mapquest nor Google Maps show this street yet, but http://www.multimap.com/ does show the street. Ironically I think MultiMap is a European site! Maybe MultiMap will incorporate the send to GPS feature on there site, then we will have that functionality and current maps to boot.

Problems with detection

I just did the same thing. Four tries. Test page could not detect it.

Finally got it to pass

I tried again. I had not paid attention to the bar at the top of the browser screen. My security settings were asking for permission to run the ActiveX control. I clicked on the bar to okay it and it passed the test.

Dont feel bad I did the same

browser issues

The instructions DO say that it's for Internet Explorer only. The test page does not work on Firefox or Mozilla.

As soon as I have my GPSr with me I'll test to see if the plugin really works with Firefox. The options are there todownload, I just don't have my GPSr handy to test it.

Hi jjc715,

With your Nüvi 750 connected to your computer, you'll see the GPS option, "only" when creating a "new map" and then clicking on "Send". You don't get the GPS option when you click "Send" on existing maps you've already created.

At the present time you can only create and upload "waypoints" (no routes).

HTH (hope that helps)

Hi CaseGuy, motorcycle

Hi CaseGuy, Motorcycle Mama, has got it right. I have installed the program on two computers so far, one running Win 2000 and the other Win XP. Once the installation is complete, there is a check box to go to the test page, just before you go there connect your unit to your computer using the USB cable. Once your GPS shows that it is connected then click on the OK button to go to the test page.
I had the same problem as many others here on my XP system which uses IE 7, it told me that the program was not working but when I went to the Google Maps page it worked just fine. I think it is a security setting in IE 7 that is the problem. I can't check tonight because the XP system is at work.
Loved showing this little jem to my friends at work, they were impressed that it would also work with their Tom Tom units.
