Send Google Maps and Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

Google and Mapquest have teamed up with Garmin to allow users to import routes and locations that they find on their respective services onto their Garmin GPS. This obviously requires a usb connection of sorts, but should be available on google starting tomorrow.

This is amazing

I'm going to try this out on my next road trip.

Thanks for the info.

Route Transfer

I have read some but not all of this thread and am confused over whether you can transfer routes from Mapquest or Google Maps to a nuvi 350. Some comments indicate only POI could be transferred. Does anyone have the simple answer?

Nope, doesn't transfer routes. Another thing to keep in mind is that Nuvi 350 doesn't support routes as well.

You have to kinda be careful

You have to kinda be careful when you put in a address, for some reason that map likes to swap the search map, find business, and get directions, the only one that works good is the search maps, watch that and see if it helps you.

Has anyone else noticed a change in the ability to SEND points to the Garmin? Something has happened on my end and my ability to send specific points has been greatly restricted. I've witnessed this on two computers, same problem.

It used to be able to slightly re-position the pointer and get the geo-coordinates to be displayed. I'd then send that tweaked position to the GPS via the SEND option. I can no longer do this. I only get the option to SEND via email.

I updated my Garmin Communicator on both machines, problem still exists.

Thanks.

Same thing here, so it isn't you. I get the option to send to GPS if I have entered a street address but not a specific point. (Mac G4 Powerbook, Firefox, Nuvi 260)

TO gps'r

I have to have a specific point in the business end. Like Embassy suites, Des Moines, IA. It gives me a list and I click on the one I want then click on the send button. If I do a address it doesn't work it just sends as an email.

I had the same problem about not getting the coordinates anymore. Some of the picks listed under browse the directory are no longer there.I went back and selected Position Finder on the directory to get the coordinates .Don't like it as well as what I had before but it does the job.You should notice under your maps about certain items not being able to load anymore.

OK, guys. Thanks for confirming it's not my imagination - - they've clearly taken away some capability. It's too bad, I was really excited when they added it a few months back and got a TON of use from it.

Pioneer Support Now Too

Just sent a poi to my Nuvi 260 using Google Maps and noticed that the "Send to" drop down now includes Pioneer units in addition to Garmin and Tom Tom. Doesn't really matter to me but I did not see any mention of this on this site, so I figured I would.

.

You need to import it on the unit first.

Go to User Data > Import

didnt know you could do

didnt know you could do that....

does this work with the Nuvi 650?

I will have to check this out!

This will be sweet if it works on the 360 series too.

Great Idea

This sounds like a great idea. I think I may wait awhile to try it, though. Sounds like not all the bugs are out.

Google Works For Me

I recently used Google maps to add a POI to my 260W and it worked with no problems.

Thanks

Downloaded Mapquest Route

Go to Tools/My Data/ press "Import Route from File". The Mapquest route should be there and just press on it to import it.

Advantage?

I am new to the GPS world which explains this question. What is the advantage of using this Mapquest feature versus letting the GPS figure it out? Newer maps in Mapquest is the major reason I see. Anything else? Thanks for clearing this up for me.

You might know more than Nuvi or MapQuest

Short-term local construction, road closed, etc. Maybe you want to avoid that really horrible interstate junction with 6 lanes merging into one.

And my personal favorite: Scenic Route along the lake that your Nuvi would never give you because it is neither the shortest or fastest.

Your Nuvi would not know any of these things. It just knows the fastest/shortest route and on some models, traffic alerts. Using MapQuest, you can generate an initial route and then alter it to your preferences.

Nice... thanks-

Currently, the send to

Currently, the send to feature in Mapquest only sends waypoints to units that do not support routes, like the Nuvi 350. With this announcement by Garmin does it mean that Garmin will also put out a software update that will allow the Nuvi 350 to accept routes or is this just for those units that already accept routes?

--
I tripped going up the escalator and I fell for an hour and a half!

.

No.

This wasn't an announcement by Garmin by rather it was the case of MapQuest (and Google Maps) making use the Garmin Communicator Plug in that Garmin created to allow website operators to choose to implement an interface to send data of the website operator's choosing to compatible Garmin GPS units.

It does not enable any functionality that the units do not already have.

Thanks. I keep hoping

Thanks. I keep hoping Garmin will send out a software update so I can use routes, but I guess I am dreaming.

Add Routing? Never Gonna Happen

bpa5152 wrote:

You've got what you got. A unit that lacks a feature like that will in all likelyhood, never receive a firmware update that would include adding features.
To add a feature like routing, you would have to upgrade to a newer/better unit.

quasi-routing??

Is there any trick for customizing routes like adding temporary POIs along your preferred route? My Garmin 260W sometimes chooses dumb routes based on traffic patterns.

If you're talking about an internally computer route the gps comes up with when you do a "go", you can add a via to the route to force it to go through some point. I have a few vias in my favorites file for this purpose. Some Garmins support only one via point, but many new ones (even ones that don't advertise this and are said to only support 1 via point) allow you to insert many points into a route.

If your talking about pre-planned routs set up in advance for the gps, sorry, can't help, my gpd lacks that.

I've wondered about that

I've wondered about that too.
