POI question

I downloaded a couple of POI databases for the first time today and I need a little help. I first downloaded Love's Travel Stops and they displayed under MY Favorites. Then I downloaded OK state parks. This was successful, but now I can't locate the Love's locations. I assumed POI's would appear in order of proximity, but now all I see under POI's is the state parks. How do I see all or select?

RE: POI question

Anytime you add a POI or multiple POIs. The previous POIs that were in the unit are deleted. You need to put all the POIs in a directory, then load all the POIs as a group onto you GPS. You will see them all. I use POIloader to install POIs onto my Garmin. That way I can add proximity or speed alerts.

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Did you load

Did you load them together with POI Loader or separately. They have to be loaded onto the GPSr at the same time or one will be erased !
Just a thought.

Why does it erase the old

Why does it erase the old ones. It's a pain to keep the old ones and add the new ones to that folder.

re

Make sure to use Garmin's Poi Loader to load the poi files to your unit. Poi loader will convert the original poi file, be it filename.gpx or filename.csv to poi.gpi and you'll see it under "Extras" ► "Custom POI"

If you download a filename.gpx file and copy it directly to your unit, it will show up in your favorites.

Each time poi loader is run and a poi file loaded, it rewrites the poi.gpi file, therefore, the poi.gpi file only holds the last session whether one file or a hundred files were loaded. This is why you load a file today and a different one tomorrow, the one you loaded today is gone....

There is a way around this... Load the file or group of files you want. State Parks for example. Look into the file system on your gpsr and find poi.gpi rename poi.gpi file to State Parks.gpi Then load another poi file...say Fuel Stations. You'll now see you have State Parks.gpi and poi.gpi rename this poi.gpi to Fuel Stations.gpi and so on and so on....the files that are renamed will remain until deleted.

POIs

Load them using Poiloader as stated above. They will then be found on your unit under Custom POIs. (Not Favorites, Unless your units are much different than my Nuvi650)
Looks like we posted at the same time ismonop

ledillon.Not sure how you

ledillon. Not sure how you have your files set up but go to this thread for some good examples . http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674

separate poi loads

lsmonop,
That's how I did my individual poi loads and works great.
You may be the one I read this from last week.
If so, Thanks for such helpful advice. This site is awesome with all the friendly input & advice.

I guess it is true - the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Thanks to everyone on site.

Just one of the quirks

U need to follow as stated above or U will loose all. Keep an an ongoing fir names poi in my documents keep adding POIs no problem and U can delete any POI U want to by deleteing it from your POI file it will delete that POI -be sure to use POI Loader - its really easy

rberr

File Folder

Create a file folder for your POI's. Then every time you want to add a new POI, you will add it to the folder with the other POI's. This way when you load these POI's into your GPSr the old ones will be delete but since they are in your folder they will be re-added back and also the new one you added to the folder will also be added in. If you add them in manual, it will ask you for your speed or proximity distance for each one that is in your folder. Hope I didn't confuse you. grin

Erasing POI Files

Why is that a problem? Does your folder have other files?

Create a POI folder and place only POI files in it. Sub folders are are also useful. I have one called Fuel.

Now erasing the old files on the unit is good because you know that any new files or replaced files on the PC will be updated when you run POI Loader. Just seems like the right design to me.

um - seems astonishingly amateurish to me crying ... unless you want a scheme that runs from "AA McDonalds" to "ZZ Speed Cameras"...ie the 'categories' are presented alphabetically. I wouldn't mind so much, but there's a <category> statement in gpx that they've not implemented in POI Loader.

You can set the order POIs (or rather groups of POIs) appear by using the separate .gpi file method. Basically, they appear in the order it sees the files. This needn't be alphabetic, if you put them on the unit one at a time - I do it from an SD card - keep popping the card in and out and saying "YES" to the next one in the desired order.

It's a nuisance to setup, but once done, the order is retained, even if the individual files are subsequently overwritten.

Fuel folder

Phil,

I was just pointing out that you can have sub folders to help organize how the files are displayed on the GPS.

Yes a lot if not all of the Garmin software needs to be revamped and modernized. Some of it is just so old school like requiring redlight text in a file name. You can generally get it to do what you want but at a price. Want to use a non default proximity distance forces you to use manual mode in the loader or load and rename files. Want to use 2 different proximity lengths in a file - oops can't do that - Oh yeah make 2 files. And the list just keeps going on...
