POI Questions

I loaded my state parks onto my 650, however the unit only displays those w/i 50 mi of my current location. I can change locations and get more, but that seems like extra work. I did not have any problems getting the unit to show all the National Parks. Is there a limit to the number of POI the unit will retrieve? Can that be changed?

Also, when I use the POI loader, I lose all current POI files when I add a new file. Does that happen when you drag and drop POI files to the unit?

.

For any POI list, the unit will show the 50 locations nearest your current position. You can't change this. The rest are there and can be search by name or by browsing the map. Or you can break the file up into smaller segments.

Each time you run POI Loader, it takes all the files in the folder on your computer and compiles them into a single file named POI.GPI.

Your options are to keep all the files in your folder and simply load them all each time. Doesn't take too much extra time or effort.

Or some people have had good luck in renaming the POI.GPI file on the unit to something else (for example, NationalParks.GPI) to avoid having it be overwritten. (Note that this works differently on different models.)

The GPS unit will not read CSV files if they are copied directly to the unit. If you copy GPX files directly to the unit, they will become Favorites and not Custom POIs.

Thanks

for the help Mama.

Renaming the poi.gpi

This problem can be eliminated by 'renaming the poi.gpi file' ... see these links:

This works on most all Garmin GPS units that can be seen as a drive on your computer. The major advantage of this method is once you've loaded the POI file and renamed it, you're done ... you never have to load it again.

POIs can be displayed outside the first 50 sometimes...

To not pick this a little bit, I think it depends on the unit you use. On my Garmin nuvi 200, the default it to show those POIs "Near" to your current location. But you can change that to show POIs by a specific city, along your route, or at your destination (the last two only available as options if you are actively tracking to a destination of course).

How do you do this ?

Changing Custom POI view...

Again, this is specific to my nuvi 200, but...

When you click the "Where To?" icon to get into the area where you can pick Address, Points of interest, recently found, favorites, etc. on the bottom of the screen it will say "Near..." which indicates it is currently looking for stuff Near your current location. If you hit that button you can change that from "Where I am Now" (aka "Near...") to...

"A Different City" where you can then type in the city to look for.

"My Current Route"

"My Destination"

The last one is useful if you are planning on, for example, having dinner when you get to your destination in an hour and want to look for food POIs at that point.

Hope that helps,
PT

Absolutely. And thanks for pointing that out. I didn't mention it because the OP complained about it being extra work to go through the extra steps.
