Does anyone know if there's even a remote possibility…

I can see, from all the posts I've read here and on other forums, that there are a lot of Garmin owners that have issues with what appear to be software features.

I've been wondering if anyone has some "inside" information as to whether Garmin might actually implement a software upgrade based on the large numbers of requests/complaints?

From what I've seen, the Qwerty keyboard and the multiple routing functions on the Nuvi 7xx models are the most sought after upgrades by other Nuvi users and myself.

Does anyone know if there's even a chance of this happening? Would starting a petition help?

These changes are possible with a software upgrade, aren't they? I know that I'd be willing to pay a modest fee for such an upgrade.

But, as I always say, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." smile What do you think?

GeneL

I would pay.

I say start a petition, and if that don't work, lets gather a mob.
Fact/

Most likely not. Garmin is

Most likely not. Garmin is a company for profit and wants to soak everyone into upgrading to a newer, more expensive unit to get the features we took for granted in older models.

That said, I do see the QWERTY update as a real possibility since they offered it for the Street Pilot 27xx series. I asked Garmin if they'd be doing this for the Nüvi lineup as well, but they said they had no plans to do so. Strange as the older Street Pilot update was made available long AFTER the Nüvi line came out.

mostly not

An upgrade would be nice but I doubt that it would done

I'd like to petition Garmin to restore the map scale that they removed in the last nüvi 2xx "update"

That's so weird about the

That's so weird about the map scale thing. I'll admit to never really using it, but it's still there on my 660 after the Nüvi 4.2 firmware update. Strange thing is others have the exact same 660 as me and their map scale went away, too...

Without the map scale I can't judge distances anymore because I don't know at what zoom level it's set.

zooming in/out

On my 660 w/v4.20, I've noticed that zooming out makes the map scale disappear at some point; zooming in is bringing it back... again at some point.

Aman to that, I use the scale all the time.

Sound stupid, but...

I know this is a "low tech" approach, but if you want, I can zoom in all the way on mine and write down each scale until max "un zoom". I'll post it here and you could make a sticker or something. That way you can zoom all the way in until you can't anymore and then count the "un zooms" until you get what you want then reference the list. Stupid, I know, but just a thought... Hopefully, Garmin will fix this in the next update.

I know that small roads begin to disappear at 1.2 mi

I know that small roads begin to disappear at 1.2 miles, so I can zoom in or out and then count how many times I press the zoom button to get where I want, but that is tough to do while at highway speeds. You can't select the high speed zoom unless your speed is at least 59 mph.

cant any of you computer

cant any of you computer guys write a code yourself for us! then we all can enjoy qwerty

.

The Garmin OS is not public.

The firmware is not customizable (currently).

It's EASY to get QWERTY. Purchase a unit that has that capability. Problem solved.

On the new low-priced nuvis, 205 and 255, you can select from qwerty or alphabetical keyboards. They have both.

You can't get soaked by buying new units unless you cooperate. Some people have to own the latest and end up with multiple units, a self-soaking. They probably can get to their destination fine with their first unit. Same is true with map updates. Some people can't wait a week or a month to get the latest and then often complain that they don't see much difference.

I don't understand this

I don't understand this qwerty being one of the most desirable upgrades unless the screen was a lot longer and I could type on it using all ten fingers. When I'm on the computer, the qwerty keyboard is great but on the Garmin the abcdef keyboard is comfortable to me using one finger. Maybe I'm missing something here.

I agree. My 2720 has the option to use either but without being able to put all fingers on the keyboard and let muscle memory take over, the ABCDEF keyboard works much better for me.

Guess I'm missing something too.

For one thing the numbers are always shown and you don't have to be flipping back and forth. Try and find a notebook computer or any keyboard with the ABCDE layout. If you can type at all the QWERTY is so much easier.

If you bought a lower priced

If you bought a lower priced unit, like I did, you give up nicer features of the higher priced units. I bought a Nuvi 200 but have decided i want to upgrade to the 750 because I want to be able to do multi-waypoints and itineraries, among other things. This is how companies make their money. If you bought the low priced unit then got free upgrades to the nicer features and new maps every time they came out, why would anyone ever upgrade or buy another unit?

If you want the nicer features found on the 700 model units, you will have to buy one. You could always sell your old unit, that way someone without a GPS can save money and you can recoup some of your upgrade cost.

I don’t believe it. We look at what each unit has in the way of goodies and we pick the one that has all or most of what we want. Then we complain about it. We know when we buy a lap top it’s already out of date, so i imagine the GPS units to be the same. We can’t expect Garmin or any other company to re do what we have because we want something another unit has. We made our choice and now we have to live with it. As for zooming in and out on the highway, that’s a good way to wreck yer vehicle and yer GPS. Not a smart thing to be fooling with at highway speed.
One last thought. Might as well keep what you have now as the constantly rising gas prices will prohibit a lot of us from those long relaxing enjoyable trips we used to take.
Search the product before you buy and you’ll eliminate most of the problems/complaints.
