Stolen!!!

Well my nuvi 680w was stolen last night and was wondering if I really needed a 680 or if there was another wide screen nuvi out there that does the same stuff for less money. Don't need the Microsoft Live thing and all i really did was load POI files on it.Never used the MP3 player or the Bluetooth.
Any suggestions on a replacement or just get another 680?
Thanks,
Brian

Did you register it?

Did you registered it and use the Garmin lock feature? You should call Garmin and report it stolen. If the thieves call up and try to get it unlocked Garmin asks they return it to them. Once they get it in, they will contact the last registered owner of the GPS unit. You may get lucky. The thieves can't sell a locked device! Well, only to an unkowing person. Also, if it gets sold to a pawn shop, the pawn shops is supposed to check with the police for stolen property.

Too Many Models

Sorry to hear of your theft.

As for what you should buy, everybody here will recommend their own favorite, but Garmin, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=134&compare=compa... , makes it really easy to compare the models by checkmarking the units you want to compare side-by-side. You say you don't need mp3 or BT, but what about QWERTY k/b or routes, or TTS. There are just too many models to answer your question without a lot more knowledge of what features might be of interest to you.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

.

Can you give us some details about the theft? Might help someone avoid the same thing.

If you don't need a lot of features but want the Canada map, look at the nuvi 255W. Or, without Canada, the 205W. Also come in small screen versions. They're the latest. May not be in the stores yet.

got lazy this past week and

got lazy this past week and left it on my dash of my cherokee in plain sight. Didn't drive it to work Friday so someone saw it and brick through the window Saturday night during the thunderstorm so no one heard anything! My fault. I did contact Garmin already and will hit the pawns on Monday. I had at least $2500 worth of tools and wire in Jeep, didn't even take my radar detector!

Do you want spoken street names?

Too bad about the theft Brian. My nüvi 200 does what you need except widescreen & it is considered the bottom rung of the nüvi ladder. So my guess is ANY of the widescreen models will suit you fine.

Oh, the 200 series do not say road names, just to turn, so if you enjoyed that feature on you 680, look at the 255W or the 260W.

Between this and them

Between this and them stealing the catalytic converts off of Toyota Trucks (Which I own one of) I'm about ready to start packing again!! What's this world coming too when you can't own anything nice without some A**HOLE taking it from you!?

Sorry about your loss but Wally World has quite a few of the less expensive models on sale right now or at least they did this morning when I was in the store in my corner of the world.

I'll turn in to the insurance on Monday and will probably get something newer and better with all the features i never use! That's what happens when you have to have cool stuff no matter what.

Check Costco

They have some real good deals, I have a 650 it plays mp3 but no traffic or bluetooth, I really like it.

At $399, the 680, at most

At $399, the 680, at most Costco stores, it's still maybe the cheapest option for you with the same bells and whistles.

What will they steal next???

Wow, so you got hit too? A couple of ppl here were hitting car dealerships and stealing catalytic converts. That is a shame that you would have to do that!

Now they were (lucky for you) either some really dumb theives or just very concentrated on one industry! Heck, if you are going to break into someone's car and steal their GPS, might as well make it worth your time and risk and get the radar detector as well.

That is so funny!!! I laughed so hard, I almost cried. That will fix the degenerate thieves. I bet they think - or not - next time before they steal your gas.

Thanks for the laugh!!

Relacement for nuvi 380

I have a nuvi 660, which is wide screen, and I am very happy with it. Now it does have bluetooth and also comes with traffic transmitter, both features that I use continuly.

My wife has the nuvi 360, which has traffic capability but does not come with the transmitter. The 360 is not wide screen, but I have used both and and after using her 360, I find that wide screen is not that important to me anymore.

They didn't hit me YET, but the dealership where I bought my truck from had almost ALL of their cars on the lot hit and the Chevy dealership next to it was hit the same night as well. It's a REAL problem if you own a Toyota van of truck!!

Suggestion on replacement

Sorry to hear about the theft. I been reading articles that this is happening more and more. I would suggest the Nuvi 750. I just got one at Sam's Club for $398, which is the cheapest I've seen.
Good Luck!

NUVI 750

The NUVI 255W will cost you almost as much as a 750 which has many more features. Check PC Nation (I think a great company). They have the 750 for $357, no sales tax and free shipping. Just bought two myself and love it..It just depends what features you want and as someone else stated compare units at the Garmin website.

I really like this kind of logic, what can I say-

Once upon a time, during the BIG trash-collector strike in Ney York City (quite a few yrs ago, now)... every block in town had trash piling up by the ton! One guy decided to box his trash up and gift-wrap it, with pretty paper & bows, etc. Every day when he went to work... he would leave it in full view (on the passenger seat of his car) --with his window down! He he!!! It never failed! Each day, somebody took his trash out for him!

How's that for a moral-to-the-story! I'm still all LOL (literally) when ever I think of it-

YA GOTTA LOVE INNOVATION!

I would look into getting the Garmin streetpilot c580, it only costs $289 at www.amazon.com, here is the link, http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-StreetPilot-3-5-Inch-Portable-N...

That navigation system has been a lot of help for me and has been reliable. I would look into getting that system, you'll still retain the MSN. God Bless

locking gas cap not the answer

I have read recently of a spike in stolen gas in my area. Since most tanks are now made of plastic, the theives simply drill a holl on the bottom. Apparently a hell of a lot faster to drain a tank this way sad

Personally, the sooner a theif gets burned, literally, because of a spark from his electric drill, the better. But, just don't think that because you have a locking gas cap you are safe...

Sorry to hear about the theft.

Unfortunately not everyone locks their GPS because "it is such a pain to have to put the code in" but if more people did, then the theives would find themselves with useless units more often and they would be less likely to bother to steal them.

They contain precious metals, such as platinum. Apparently the converters on Toyotas are especially easy to remove.

Are you going to be able to get it back soon, or are the police holding it as evidence? Will you have to "buy" your own GPS back from the pawn shop?

the officer said the judge will sign an order, I will meet the officer at the pawn shop and retrieve within 5 business days.
Chattanooga pawn shops have to hold items for 30 days before they can put the items on the shelf for sale. The PD uploads a list of serial #'s for stolen items every night and it popped up on the list Tuesday morning.

yes and emailed garmin to

yes and emailed garmin to have it locked!

.

Garmin can't lock the unit.

If you have registered it and reported it stolen, Garmin can place that notification in their system so that if anyone else besides you tries to unlock it or register it or anything else, the unit can't be unlocked or registered. And if the "new owner" sends it in to Garmin, they will return it to the registered owner.

Such a Pain

You have got to be kidding....a second or two is such a pain? Give me a break..Hopefully it will never be stolen but if it is you will not have a very good chance to get it back...

I think you understood my

I think you understood my point perfectly well, it has my unlock code in it, it was just a notification to Garmin that it was stolen if someone called to have it unlocked they would be aware.

unlocking

If someone had a stolen unit and it was locked, when they called Grmin to unlock it, Garmin would request it be sent in to them.

There's no "magical" unlock code they can give you to unlcok it. They have to physically have the device to do it..... BUT, even if you only registered it with Garmin and DID NOT call them to inform them it was stolen, Garmin would see that the name address and info from the thief did not match what was registered on the unit. Garmin woudl then call you and ask if you've had it stolen or sold it to someone else.

costco

Agree, costco would be the way to go.

Catalytic Converters

They are using ratcheting pipe cutters to cut the front and rear pipes, it takes about 1 minute and they can sell it as a replacement (some as high as $800.) or for the Platinum...
