POI Factory Hot Dog Shop discussion

You never know when inspiration is going to strike....

Tonight I was struck down by a documentary about hot dog shops, so I will be going over this documentary and geocoding all the hot dog shops mentioned in this show.

Sometimes there is nothing better then a hot dog to cure that craving.

So I am reaching out to the community, post your favorite hot dog place here and it will be included in the POI Factory Hot dog shop POI File.

AMEN!

Skippy's Hotdogs

Have to tell you that for a really good hotdog straight out of NY there's nothing better than a dog from SKIPPY's.

Skippy's is a long time favorite of Islanders here on Staten Island, NY. Skippy's dates back to the early 60's when Skppy use to run it, now his granddaughter is running the show. She is located just past the intersection of Hylan Blvd and Jefferson Ave. going towards the VZ bridge on the right.

Skippy's an old old old truck style stand that is well known and has been written up in many of our local papers.

Stop by and let Skippy know that Kenny G sent you....

Delay in replying

Sorry about the delay in updating my files.

Both my wife and my mother have been sick. My mother passed away last month. At 71, she was still young and we were close.

As for my wife, she is seeing the doctor toi see what can be done. This is due to effects of a brain operation last year.

I will try to get caught up later this week.

Take care of things close to you

Dom -

Don't worry about updating the file. Hot dogs can wait. Take care of things at home and close to you above all. My deepest sympathies, and I'm sure from all of us who make up this community, on the loss of your mother. And our best wishes for your wife's recovery.

The Cotton Ave. stand is Nu-Way's original 1916 location. Nu-Way is the oldest continuously run hot dog stand in Georgia. Since 1916 they have served over 130 million hotdogs. You can sit @ one of 11 low swivel stools @ a Formica counter or settle in to a small booth. I ordered two chilidogs with mustard and onions and a Flaky iced Coke. Nu-Way is famous for their Flaky ice. The dogs are grilled and the buns are steamed. My two dogs were exceptional and the Flaky iced Coke is a perfect pairing with the dogs. Stop by and see why millions say "I'd go a long way for a Nu-Way." Enjoy!

Thanks

Thanks for the kind words and prayers, they do mean a lot to us.

It may take a several days to get back into it since I will download the files I have here to update mine since I know some have had changes.

My files are actually a set of spreadsheets with macros so it is not a simple download and go! That is why it may take a several days.

On another note, the Appointment with the doctor went well. The scans did not show anything abnormal. Now if they can only find out what is causing the headaches and dizzy spells. Like my wife always says, there are other people that are worse off than she is.

In the meantime, keep the locations coming, I will get them in as soon as I can.

Foot Long with Curly Fries

When I was a kid (1960’s) and living in Buffalo, my father and me would go for a Saturday hair cut in Hamburg and visit with family that live in that area. On the way back into Buffalo we’d stop at a small dinner owned by an old guy who was always dressed in a V-neck T-shirt and dirty apron. We’d sit at the long counter with its round vinyl covered stools that were bolted to the floor and with a cigar stuck in the corner of his mouth he’d take our orders for a huge foot long hot dog and a large order of fresh cut deep fried curly fries.

The old guy that owned the place had a large stainless steel sink filled with cold water and jammed with huge potatoes floating in it just behind the counter. When you place your order he’d toss the dogs on the grill and then place the potato in a device, (like an apple peeler) that was screwed to the side of the sink. He’d stick the potato on the little spikes at one end then crank and spin the spud up against a disk that looked like a cheese grater and out would come a mass of curly potatoes.

He’d then place the mass into the deep fryer basket and then there’d be the accompanying hissing and splattering of hot oil has the basket of fresh wet potatoes sank into the deep fryer. I can still smell them as I write this. The old guy would then drop the heaping pile of hot curly fries into large paper serving baskets to which I would top off with lots of malt vinegar and enough salt to melt ice off the sidewalks in winter. You don’t dare use a fork to eat the fires, this is finger food at its finest! I sure would like to taste those curly fries again.

I can’t remember the name of the place but it was on the east side of Number 5 near Blasdell and the Bethlehem Steel Plant. I have never-ever had curly fries as good as those since. Fortunately the Roast Beef on Weck (Kimmelweck) can still be had at Swiston’s. But that’s another story.

If someone could get the name & coordinates

Dom

Dom,

I had a talk with my cousin and he was able to come up with the name of the place, Curt's!!

I did some digging and found a news article about the place in the Buffalo News from July 3/09 singing the praises of this place. To my surprise it’s still up and running after all these years. According to the article, the food, (them fries) are just as good now as they were 40 some years ago. I am now planning a special trip just to revisit the place and old memories.

"the curly fries ($2.75) were indeed something Curt’s can be proud of. Like all the sides, they were steaming hot, and the curly fries were crisp without being greasy."

http://www.buffalonews.com/entertainment/dining/story/722514...

The address is:
Curt's Stop Inn Restaurant‎
3379 Lake Shore Rd, (Route 5)
Blasdell, NY‎ - (716) 826-4131‎

I got this from Google Maps so I don’t know if this is ‘SPOT ON’ or just the ‘General’ Lat, Long - 42.794306,-78.846704 – But I hope to be at their door in late August or early September this year.

Thanks

Hi,

I will take a look at your file as soon as I have some time, probably later this week, and incorporate what I can.

Thanks again

Ashworth's Drugstore, Cary NC Cloos' Coney Dogs, Raleigh

As a native Caryite, I was raised on Ashworth's hot dogs. They still have their soda fountain set-up...pretty much unchanged over the last 50 years. Good ole' Jesse Jones hot dogs with the traditional toppings: mustard, chili, onions, slaw and, if you like (and I do), ketchup. Dogs and buns are steamed and then buns are toasted. Mmmm! Corner of Chatham and Academy Streets. Cloos' is for the Yankee transplants and those of us that married one of 'em. Their dogs are NOT skinless. They're steamed and then griddled and pop when you bite into them. Different styles/toppings available. Great REAL sliders too and the BEST french fries and chili fries...a particular obsession of the owner, Dan Cloos. On Avent Ferry Road, behind Mission Valley Shopping Center.
