POI Factory Hot Dog Shop discussion

You never know when inspiration is going to strike....

Tonight I was struck down by a documentary about hot dog shops, so I will be going over this documentary and geocoding all the hot dog shops mentioned in this show.

Sometimes there is nothing better then a hot dog to cure that craving.

So I am reaching out to the community, post your favorite hot dog place here and it will be included in the POI Factory Hot dog shop POI File.

Errors in the CSV files.

I think there may be a problem with the way some of these locations are being imported. For some reason, a lot of the locations that have an apostrophe in their name seem to be getting messed up on import. The "'" in the names keeps getting replaced with "’s"

Here are some examples of some ones I just submitted the other day:

Augie and Ray's shows up as Augie and Ray’s in the CSV file and displays this way on my Nuvi 660.

Guida's Restaurnat shows up as Guida’s Restaurant in the file as well.

After looking at the CSV file closer in Excel, I can also see a lot more entries with this problem. What is the cause of this and can somebody fix it??

BTW... Blackies is already on the list! smile

Thanks!

Sorry about that. I have gone through the whole file and I think I got them all. If you see any more, let me know and I will fix them.

Thanks
Dom

I've seen these problems in other CSV files as well. For example, I've noticed that the Hamburger CSV also has some of the same errors and strange characters. Any idea what causes this or what the solution is? Or, do we just need to bring them up on a case by case basis to get them fixed?

Thanks!

BTW. The Hotdog list looks great now! smile

I fixed them all manually.... but I don't know how or why it happened. This database is entered manually, though I do use cut and paste between two screens when the data is supplied in this forum.

Thanks retiredtechnician,

I use your program all all the CSV files I upload.
Thanks to the post you mention, I was able to located an "error" in the Hot Dog Database. One of the entries had double quotes in the field. I changed these to singles so future downloads of this file in CSV format should not have the problem.

I don't know what caused the other problem. "-" was not the dash, but a similar character... lone dash and some single quotes were not the actual single quote but a similar character.

Thanks again

Hmm, I guess I forgot to keep up with that page. I had forgotten that some of these files were made in the other database and that I have to manually go in and list the contributors. Sorry about that guys.

We will be looking at improving this sort of design over the next 6 months and getting a more automated system so that there are not so many balls for me to keep up in the air.

Concerns Me

Perrdom wrote:

Thanks retiredtechnician,

From this, I'm wondering if this means you got a 'correct file' log when checking this 'Hot Dog' csv POI file with 'POI Verifier'. This concerns me because, as indicated in my posting above, 'POI Verifier' couldn't parse the file because of the quote error. If 'POI Verifier' showed a 'passed' file, I'm wondering if you're using the latest version.

Your program is working fine. The database is manually input here on the factory. It is not an upload but rather each field is entered manually... I am using cut and paste from the submitted entries when possible.

I am not sure how the factory generates the various files, you would have to ask Miss POI or JM.

My comment was referring to all the other POIs that I have submitted.

I do have a spreadsheet of this info. I will generate a CSV file and try running it through the verifier when I have a minute. I can also download the various CSV files and try to run them through the verifier.... should have thought of that earlier....

I downloaded the three CSV versions and put all 3 through your verifier. As the database is now, there are four files, 2 groups of 2, that I need to investigate as potential duplicates. I just need to check if they are "neighbors" or "duplicates".

The rest of the database appears to be "clean"

Thanks again

Didn't mean to open a can of worms with my comment guys but I do have a suggestion. Maybe someone should have a certain amount of contributions before they can be considered a Contributor.

For Example: They must supply at least 10 Hot Dog Stands and be an active member before they can be listed under "Other Contributor(s)". This would apply for any POI on the site. This would also eliminate having to add the "one and done" people that maybe submit one entry and then never come back to the site again. I'm guessing that you wouldn't want the size of the "Other Contributor(s)" list to go on forever so having some stipulations would help keep the size down.

I know I'm just a newbie so if I'm overstepping my bounds by making these suggestions just let me know and I'll load the coordinates of a really big rock into my GPS so I can drive there and then crawl under it. smile

Change Coordinates For Guida's Restaurant

I wanted to make a slight change to the coordinates for a location that I provided. It's a little bit off the road so it's not alerting properly. I just moved the coordinates closer to the road so this should fix it.

small typo

My apologies but I made a small oops for the restaurant name. I took it from the phone book and the initial is never mentioned when talking about the place as it is just called Kelekis. There was a newspaper writeup that showed where I was incorrect.

It should be:
C. Kelekis Restaurant
1100 Main Street
Winnipeg, MB
R2W 3S2
1-204-582-1786
-97.131537, 49.916850

I will down load the file shortly to take to San Francisco. H

P.S. Well, I see that I jumped the gun here. Please let me know how you want the updated file handled or whether you just want the information and in what form.

I was able to update the .gpx file itself and included some additional bay area ones as new waypoints using GeePeeEx editor. Let me know how you want this handled. smile

Please post your data here for the POI File maintainer to add themselves. This way all the work that they are doing stays in the file and they don't have to add their latest batch to the file you have made.

It keeps things simple for now. We will be improving the system over the next few months.

Thanks,

Miss POI

When I was a kid

As long as you are posting these hot dog places, please add the ones that cost 5 cents. I miss taking the subway (or bus) for a nickel to get the good 5 cent dog along with the 5 cent Coke or Pepsi. Coffee was never more than a nickel and I was too young for the 5 cent cigar. Ice cream was 5 cents too, but a Good Humor was a dime. I will wait patiently for your cheap hot dog list. Have you noticed that the keyboard has eliminated the cents symbol?
