Problem with the Lifetime Updater

This is what I get everytime I try to use the Garmin Lifetime Updater:

NOTE
There was an error installing your maps. Please try again. If problems continue, Please contact Garmin customer support.

I have 2 GPS units registered with it, a 650 & a 765 I don't know if it matters.

Thanks in advanced.

lifetime updater vs map update installer.

Many users have had multiple issues with the lifetime map updater. I suggest you uninstall it and instead use Option 2 (Map update installer) on the my.Garmin map download page.

Have you tried a hard reset?

I just tried that and it didn't work.
I still get the green line going across then hear the blip and then states that it can't unlock the map.

Are you trying to load the same map on two different units? It's my understanding that each map is tied to the individual unit. If you have 2 units both w/lifetime maps, it would still need to be 2 separate downloads.

The "can't unlock the map" makes me think the map you are trying to put on it, is for another unit.

Problem with the Lifetime Updater

I used the Map Install program which would only let me install a selected section of the US because the whole US won't fit.

Once I click ok to that error it seams to work ok but that's just a PITA having to see that all the time now.

I'd say to contact Garmin support, as the message says, is your best course of action.

If you have 2 Nuvi models with lifetime maps and both are registered to the Lifetime Map Updater program you should be able to install the new maps on both units with only one download.

Problems with the lifetime updater -

I had the same problem(s). Finally got discouraged with the Lifetime Map Updater and installed it manually. I did log in to myGarmin before I started the manual download and install (computer and unit) option.

It went in flawlessly. Guess I'll be using the manual downloads from now on.

Hope this helps someone.

Problems with the lifetime updater

Update:
I called Garmin this morning, very helpful and took his time with me.

I had a file called GMAPSUPP.IMG on the unit in the Garmin folder, he had me delete that file and restart the unit. The erorr was gone.
After that he walked me thru installing the map back to the unit. He did advise me to change my screen saver to none during the reinstall process then hung up the phone. Also during our conversation I explained that the Lifetime Map Updater program wasn't working, he advised me to delete the program then reinstall it.

I have ...

eight Nuvi's and updated all with option #2, as directed by Garmin, now every once in awhile, I get pop-up notice of a new map update is out (2012.30)...Strange! I certainly hope they get this taken care of.

Hard reset worked for me.

Problem with the Lifetime Updater

That's the map I installed.

They also told me I could delete the other map updates from Add & Remove Programs which I did.
I had 3 of them there and they were over a gig each so I gained some space back on the HDD.

Got a question for you, On my 765T I have 3 maps, how can I delete them off of the unit?

Problem with lifetime updater

I had the same problem with my nuvi 350. I loaded the new mapupdate using the old map update process. Lifetime kept telling me I had an update but would not load it. I deleted the 350 as one of my gps units from lifetime updater. I then added the 350 back into lifetime updater. That fixed my problem.

This may help

This may help - Garmin today have released a new version of the Lifetime Updater. Version 2.1.2 includes several bug fixes for issues we’ve seen reported in addition to the following new features:

· Added “Change region” to reinstall options

· Added ability to change application language

· SD Card Support

I gave up with the Lifetime Updater. It gave me false notice of new map updates and punked out when trying to install new maps. I uninstalled it and now follow poi.com to learn when new map updats are available, and then go to the Garmin website and manually install. A lot less headaches.

Problem with the Lifetime Updater

I hear ya, you'll also find out there if the new version acually works now. I had the same issues you did.

Delete Maps Off Unit Question

deerhtr wrote:

When you say you have 3 maps, can you identify them?
Whatever you do, DO NOT delete the gmapprom.img or gmapbmap.img since you potentially can brick your unit.

I'm not sure if you do in fact have 3 maps on your unit or you are identifying .img files on your computer as maps.
gmapprom.img = your main map
gmapbmap.img = the basemap
gmaptz.img = is for time zones

Will Garmin EVER get Lifetime Updater working properly?

jumbo wrote:

I just checked and there is a new update Version 2.1.3

I downloaded and installed the latest version. I thought I would give it a try to see if it worked by reinstalling the latest maps to my computer only. The previous version consistently hung at 0.5% installation to any computer I tried it on. So...it downloaded and verified the files in about 90 minutes. Then when I clicked on install I got the message "Garmin Lifetime Updater has experienced an unexpected error and must shut down" (Really? Are there EXPECTED errors?). I reopened the program several times and got the same result. I will continue to use the old method (#2) since it seems to work flawlessly.

Option 2 Worked Great

Just got my 50 today and I tried Option 1, but no good. When with Option 2 and got it updated with the new map in 25 mins. Thanks to all.

Lifetime Updater

My Lifetime Updater seems to not of heard of the new map (2012.30). It partially worked downloading and installing 2012.20 but errored out on settting up the maps on my computer..then every day notifies me that there is a new map....2012.20.

I think I am going to uninstall it and go back to manual.

Lifetime Updater for Mac

I just downloaded 2012.4 to my MacBook Pro and from there installed to both the laptop and my nuvi 260W. Lifetime Updater worked w/o a hitch.

Lifetime Updater on PC

Just d/l'ed the latest upgrade 2.1.7 for Lifetime Updater, and then d/l'ed the 2012.4 to my PC - no problems.

Issue with Windows 7

I have a Windows 7 64bit system. I downloaded the new updater. Download went fine, installation went fine (I am Administrator) The new maps downloaded fine, but when I went to install the maps, it worked for about 40 seconds and then I got the "There was a problem installing the maps" message. I retried 2 more times. Then after years and years of dealing with BSOD problems...restarted. Tried it again, worked perfectly...

Definitely Gremlins at work.

Also slows down boot

I got one of my two nuvis to work with the lifetime updater last time and the other one didn't. After two tries I did it the old way. Then I noticed the time required every boot up for it to load. That did it for me. It got uninstalled. Seems like another nice idea poorly implemented.

FIrst time with Lifetime Updater

I tried my first map update with lifetime updater over the weekend. I got the same error and tried two more times. Before giving up, I downloaded and installed the new version of updater. The map install actually worked this time, I think. It finished, at least.

Now the only problem is that I get the message that a new map is available every time I start my laptop. I guess I need to check which map version is installed on my 2595 and go from there.

problems with the lifetime updater

I've had problems with the lifetime updater recently. It took me forever but I think it finally did it. Next day I called garmin to have them confirm if it really did update, but the wait seemed interminable. Guess I'll try them again when I have nothing else to do.

Hopefully the Lifetime Updater software updates

I've never had a problem with the Lifetime Updater, however I've seen that some others (maybe you) have experienced a problem...to the extent that they use Option 2 to update their map.

I thought maybe someone could tell me what the [most] recent Lifetime Updater software update improvements/fixes have been. Hopefully the software updates have [now] made the Lifetime Updater work without a problem for everyone.

Did Garmin finally see the

Did Garmin finally see the light and remove the Option 1 / Option 2 from the my.Garmin.com map update page? I was poking around there today and couldn't find that choice. When I click "Download" on the myMaps tab, it just goes to a page with a single option for installing Garmin Map Updater. I didn't go through the whole process, but it appears to be the old Option 2 and not the Lifetime Map Updater.

Edit: As a follow-up on this, I wonder if Garmin is giving up on the Lifetime Map Updater for Windows. If you go to www.garmin.com, click Support > Software > Mapping Programs, the Lifetime Map Updater for Windows is nowhere to be found. It is still listed under the Mac OS software, but not for Windows.

If you do a site search at Garmin for "Lifetime Map Updater" you can find the Windows version, but they now have it hidden away pretty well. And like I said earlier, I can't find the Lifetime Map Updater at all in the myMaps link at my.Garmin.com.

A "Garmin Adventure" is what

A "Garmin Adventure" is what comes to my mind everytime I want to update my maps.
Garmin has a whole bunch of apps: Express, which doesn't install maps locally and apparantly never will, Garmin Lifetime Map Updater which doesn't work correctly, Garmin WebUpdater wich doesn't install maps, Mappinstall, RoadTrip, MapManager,… and regularly I see one more piece of crappy software they add to their list. The adventure of updating my maps on my device and computer always takes me a few hours. What will go wrong this time, is what I always fear.
There is not one software title they have that does not have major bugs.

When the maps finally install, they hardly fit on my Navigator IV ( Zumo 6something ) leaving no space anymore for standard files like voices or trip logs, which proves they're not only bad software designers. Damn that thing is slow.

Garmin is a company that deserves to go extinct. And I predict they will when Samsung or Apple start selling weatherproof tablets.

Welcome?

clarifix wrote:

Welcome to The Factory although I'm not really sure why you're here.

That being said--some thoughts come to mind:

Lifetime Updater is no longer used to update maps.

You don't mention GarminMapUpdater yet it remains the favorite map update software used by many of us here.

Yes, WebUpdater does not update maps. But what it does do, it does quite well.

Zumo map updates: If you Zumo 6something is a 665, then updating maps to a SD card is a bit more of a challenge than for other models of Garmin devices, but if yours is a 660, it should be offered auto-map-updates to a SD card if the full map can not fit in the device's internal storage.

Yes, Garmin has some software issues and I'm among the group that complains when it's deserved. But given your first post here, why not just buy your motorcycle-specific GPS from another manufacturer?
