Cannot Change Region to Download

I have a Nuvi650. On the Nuvi650 itself, I have the region "Canada and the Border States".

I also have an SD card. On that SD card, I have the region "Lower 48 States. South East"

I attempted to change the region for the Nuvi650 itself. Garmin Express would NOT give me any options, but to re-install "Canada and the Border States". (The drop-down list that should show all regions only showed"Canada and the Border States") The other regions would not show-up as available options.

Any thoughts on how to "unstick" "Canada and the Border States" as the only option of the Nuvi650?

Look at my reply to Maddog67 earlier in this thread (about 9 posts up on this page). The same solution should work for your nuvi 650.

Good suggestion. I'll try that approach with the next Garmin update.

Did my two Nuvis

I started with the 2699, Installed to computer and device. It took 30 minutes. The strange thing was that "Time Remaining" stopped at 10 minutes, but "% Complete" contiued until 100%.

Next up the 1390. That took 49 minutes, Most of it was copying files to the device, because of the slower USB port. Another 10 minutes to copy the full screen JCV file.

Then ran a simulation drive on both devices, that ran OK.

It will probably be another map update before I will get to a longer real test drive.

Map Update went fine, BUT

Unpair/re-pair

Do an unpair and then re-pair device. Actually I find I need to do this with probably 1 out of 4 updates. I suppose it depends on what is going on with the Nuvi or even my Samsung phone.

Smartphone link

I have had this happen in the past and the cause was that somehow the setting for accepting phone calls on the Garmin had been turned back on. I usually let my car's infotainment system pair with the phone for phone calls and just use Smartphone Link for traffic. So I keep the option for hands free calling on the Garmin turned off. For some reason when this gets turned back on, the Garmin has trouble pairing with my phone because the car is already paired for phone calls.

Be warned new map 2021.30 less POI than previous

Hi all,

First of all, thanks for updates and new releases from Garmin, but after long driving and testing I find out there's less POI than expected.

If comparing google maps and previous GPS with old version back to 2020.30, you can find there's a lot of POI won't reply to Search menu within new version of 2021.30, while the one old shows clearly within old Garmin version.

I also check many POI not existed on new released Garmin 2021.30, but it shows on Google Maps and old Garmin version 2020.30, all of verified POI, they still open their door.

Hope this help. If you cannot find any POI on your road, please don't stop it, or just trying to find google or old devices of GPS.

Enjoy and be safe. See you next time!

Can you be more specific

Can you supply a specific POI that some of us could test? I know that here in Philadelphia about 75 restaurants have permanently closed due to Covid. It would be optimistic to expect Garmin would remove them, but perhaps they have done something similar.

-------------snip

I have to disagree.

2021.3 is definitely much bigger. It fits on my 3597 no problem. But it won't fit on my Nüvi 660 and hasn't for many years. I use MapInstall to install the map in 2 sections to the 660 which has a map size limit of 2 Gb.

It used to be that I could leave out California and be under 2 Gb. Then I had to leave out about 5 more western states. Then I had to delete some more western states, With this map version I had to leave out 11 states.

Since there are not a lot of new roads out there, at least not enough to make the map that much larger, it has to be that the number of POIs has increased. Granted, there have been a lot of business closures, but all the new businesses that opened before the pandemic are finally getting around to getting their places added to the various maps. The map makers only add POIs when a business submits the data to the mapmaker. Deletions occur when they are informed by the business or several users tell them.

And don't forget that Garmin doesn't use Google maps, they use the maps from Here Technology. So a POI can be on one map and not the other.

we rarely

drive let alone use the GPS, but I updated it! As well as the rlc and speed files, and POI loader. The subscription one from 2 years ago is still it in. Used to be redo POIs and the pay file is gone.

I thought I remembered to delete the maps after updating, but I found 2 old ones, so I got rid of all 3 once done. Before I used to wonder why my disk spaces was shrinking....

surely it's less POI but more data

HI all,

Sorry not to reply ASAP because the school of my kids got COIVD-19 severely. Terrible with this thing up to today.

Plus feeling off with next election ahead next week

I don't have problem to put whole data on new GPS, it seems their hard drive is bigger.

I agree the file of NTNA 2030 is bigger, but the POI is less, just look into the folder map, there's another map for POI searching, it's smaller than previous one. I don't have GPS next to me, but people can verify.

Be safe and god blessing us! Tks

What election are you referring to next week?

As an FYI, Garmin auto type GPS’s don’t have a hard drive. They use memory chips for storage, kind of like a ssd. In my experience with about three differing devices, they come from the factory with those chips about 90% full, hence the reason you may need a microSD card at some point intime when doing an update

Garmin says "cannot unlock maps" after sd card update to 2021.30

I just downloaded and installed Garmin NA 2021.30. I downloaded it from a torrent source. After converting from RAR, I put the img file on my SD card and inserted into Garmin 1450 and 1490 and chose this map in the 'maps' setting. What's different about this time is that now "cannot unlock maps" comes up upon restart. Clicking "OK" moves the window to a normal startup and the map seems to load fine(ly). This is new to me. The choice is between my new map and the old 2011 map and I can choose both or just the new one. Can anyone explain what this new (to me) "cannot unlock..." is about, please?

For problems with Garmin files downloaded from a torrent source, I doubt Gamin would be willing to be of much help. question

But I could be wrong. razz

Thanks for the replies

I won't post anymore about "torrents." I notice however that there are SD cards preloaded with maps listed on EBay for much less than official Garmin ones. I wouldn't use bootleg sources and don't expect anyone to compromise him/herself by answering questions about those sources. If I could remove my previous post about this, I would.

I expect these ebay offers are genuine Garmin-made maps on SD cards, not bootleg maps, although a potential buyer needs to be cautious and check with the Seller before bidding/buying, and prefer a Seller with lots of good feedback and a return policy. The bidder also should make sure that the map version is recent and not several years out of date and they should check the Garmin site to confirm the SD card will work on their model...some older nuvi devices can't open files larger than 2GB and if the SD card contains larger files, it won't work; e.g., nuvi 3xx or 6xx series.

Here is one quite common way these get to ebay:

-A North American Garmin device owner whose device has maps of North America plans a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Europe.
-From Garmin, they buy a Europe map SD card, use it on their vacation, and upon returning home, have no future need for it.
-They offer it on eBay at a steep discount hoping for a sale.

[Switch North America and Europe above as needed above to include any global use.]

If these items on eBay are Garmin-made maps-on-SD, there is no legal issue preventing their resale or use since the map is locked to the SD card itself, just like maps on our newer Garmin devices are locked to the device they were installed to.

On the other hand, these maps on SD cards don't offer updates and do not contain features like junction view. Given the cost of a new Map on SD card from Garmin, my preference would be not to buy the SD card map for my Garmin device but rather buy a low-end Garmin model with maps preinstalled for the country/continent that you plan to visit since it'd allow for map updates and all features. smile

SD card maps on ebay;

Thank you Craig W for your insights.
