Installing won't improve

Installing won't improve until Garmin embraces USB3 technology. Too many Legacy USB2 units out there.

Updated our....

2455LMT and 2555LMT. Took about 30 minutes for each unit using Windows 7 and Garmin Express 6.5.1.0. No problems noted after update.

Always go to MTP mode and check SID, JCV and SQLite file versions and dates.

After install 2455LMT had --

Six (6) SID files in SID folder (3 dated from previous map update and 3 dated with today's date)
Two (2) JCV files in JCV folder (1 dated from previous map update and one with today's date)
Two (2) SQLite DB files in SQLite folder (1 dated from previous map update had 1 with today's date)

After install 2555LMT only had 3 SID, 1 JCV and 1 SQLite all with today's date. Not sure why 2455LMT has extra files, but it always does after a map update.

So I did a clean up process on 2455LMT and moved previous versions of SID, JCV and SQLite DB files to backup folder on PC (just in case). Saved almost 1.6GB of space this time. Have done this clean up on the 2455LMT after each if the last three updates and have had no problems with the unit. No need to do this on 2555LMT since it only has the files dated from today. Read somewhere in this forum (I think) that each file version is unique to each map version. Not sure the cleanup is critical but 2455LMT seems to be a little more responsive once it's done.

Updated

Took half the time estimated to install the update and no issue at all so far.

Nothing is said about this as yet. Time frame I guess. I wish I had a photo group to send reference to. Very odd that no others had this experience. Not enough time for others to read and respond..

Thanks for the heads up.

My update (Nuvi 2689) went better than ever before. Told me it would take 17 min and in fact took 16. Seems Garmin has at least improved the update process.. now to see if there are any noticeable changes to the maps in my area.

Problematic update for me

Judging by the postings here I decided it should be OK to do the update for my Nuvi 2699.

I am using GE straight to the device. I have not had any problems with GE before today. The last update finished in less than 50 minutes total, updating device and computer.

1. Downloaded files went OK. Then it was activating the maps for more than an hour before I decided it probably would not get through. Task Manager showed that the memory usage changed, so it was doing something. I stopped GE using the Task Manager, which could have been a cause for problem. I also left the Nuvi plugged in.

2. Restarted GE and started the update as before. Now it got stuck in Preparing Device, which normally is done in a minute. Now it was doing this for ten minutes before I decided something was wrong. This time I stopped GE using the X in upper right corner and now GE warned that exited might do harm to the device. I did the exit anyway. Now I also safely unplugged the Nuvi and plugged it back in.

3. Restarting GE and and started the update as before. Now everything went the normal way, although it said it downloaded files for about five minutes which should not have been required.

I did a simulation drive and everything seems to be OK.

Not sure what went wrong here, just happy that it could be fixed by restarting the update.

Waiting for the 2019.20 large jcv first

I haven’t updated my 1390T yet. Waiting to see if someone will post the 2019.20 large jcv first. But I did update my 2495LMT with no problems. But it did take about 40min to complete.

Downloaded and installed in less than 30 min

No problems

one little problem

I have an old 1450LM with a 3 gig sd card and I have had this problem before , it tells me I don't have enough room to install the update ! so I format the sd card and go for the install again and all goes well took about 40 min , this doesn't happen every time I have an update on maps, some times it deletes the old maps and writes the new one's by itself go figure.

Never a problem

I’ve never had a problem updating with Sandisk 6GB microSD cards in my 1390T or 2495 LMT.

space issue

It probably happens because update doesn't see space occupied by old map as "free" space. So it's expecting to find unused space of size at least equal to new map. That;s why after deleting old map all the sudden you have enough space on card.

It may be poorly written update software or way to avoid loss of old map if update doesn't work. But there should be an option for user to choose deleting old map to proceed with update.

Nope

It's not that or we'd all be having to do it. Express will normally delete maps it has put on your device or card. The issue normally occurs if a map has been installed some other way, then Express doesn't know it's not a map you want to keep so won't delete it.

incorrect clean-up during update.

There have been many reported cases where Garmin Express doesn't seem to correctly remove all files from a previous map when it performs an update. This can cause a build-up of unneeded files causing a shortage of space needed to update. This behavior is not consistent, doesn't affect all users (even those with the same device model and map version). I don't think anyone has ever come up with a good explanation of when and why it happens.

While that's true, .gma and .unl files for example always seem to remain, that's slightly different to what I think grzesja is suggesting, which is there has to be space large enough for a new map each time without first deleting the old one. That certainly isn't the case.

File cleanup.

I agree, the .gma and .unl files are trivial, but I have had it leave old .SID, .JCV and .ASR files as well. Most updates it works perfectly, but every now and then it screws up on the file cleanup. Why, I don't know. As an example, on this 2019.20 update, it left the old JCV file on my 755T. On my other 3 devices everything was perfect.

This is one of the reasons I use cloning on updates, so it is easy to compare the before and after results.

855 Can't Hold New Maps

For the first time, I was unable to load the new map version due to insufficient storage space on my Nuvi 855. It's been years since I was able to do all of North America, but US + Canada still loaded fine. Now I am unable to load that one too, as of 2019.20.

Sure, I can load the regions of US, but the problem with that unlike the North America or US + Canada, the regional map slices don't allow voice recognition.

Has anyone else with a 855 run into this problem?

I suspect the only way to go forward will be to attempt to load NA maps on to an SD card, if possible. I currently use my SD card to hold European maps when I travel there, but performance is best with the onboard membory.

Updated my both devices and

I have a nuvi 855, and can still fit the full NA map in internal memory by moving the JCV file (/Garmin/JCV folder) and the ASR and SRX files (/Garmin/ASR folder) to the SD card. With those files removed from internal storage, and if you clean up unused voice files, the full NA map should fit. Note that you do not use any functionality with this configuration.

The best way to accomplish this configuration is to use cloning to install the full NA map update to SD card, then move the gmapprom.* files back to internal storage. You shold be able to keep the Europe maps on the same card where you have the NA JCV, ASR and SRX files.

Note: Do not move the .SRD files in folder /Garmin/ASR. The SRD files must remain in internal storage. For more information on the cloning method, see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231.

I have family that never leave their state but to get new map they need to download the entire country, complain about data plan. I know... 'Buy the DVD". For partial downloads roads may not connect etc, but use dividing lines / rivers / bridges to define.
If you know in next 6 months you won't be in Central/Pacific times zones who cares if roads moved / don't align? You're not THERE.
When you ARE 'hitting the road' then could update whole map.

1- Look here to see what coverage suits your needs:

2- Download MapUpdater to choose the specific region you want
installed:

For all future updates using Garmin Express, the program will remember the region you previously chose & automatically offer you the same download.

If you use Express it only downloads the map data once, any other downloading you see is files specific to your other devices.

Updated my nuvi 50 with the 2019.20 map, and software version 4.0

Only problem is it took 5 or 6 tries to actually connect the nuvi to the computer, and not have the unit turn on as though navigating. This seems to happen each time I update.

Where would I find the 'Large JCV' file people posted about? I clicked 'download all' and didn't really look to see what was included.

The nuvi 50 is incapable of using the Large JCV file:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45292

The Large JCV file is not compatible with the Essential Series nuvis (3x, 4x, and 5x) and the Drive 51 and 61 (and I expect, the earlier Drive 50 and 60) which are entry level devices according to Garmin and cannot display photorealistic Junction Views. These are the plain Drive models, not the DriveLuxe, DriveAssist or DriveSmart. Thanks to Factory member Strephon_Alkhalikoi for these important pieces of information.
